    In this video, I break down how I handle regional and individual accents in my Curse of Strahd game! Barovia, for me, is split into distinct regions that each have their own accent. From Romania, to England, to rural America, Barovia is a pretty odd sounding place. In addition to the regional accents, I cover specific characters like The Abbot, Exethanter, and even Strahd von Zarovich himself.

      Just a head's up, though, the word "gypsy" is considered a racial slur. Might want to steer clear of it in the future. The politically correct term is Roma.

    Wow, you are actually great at accents! I'm really impressed! I would love to see you actually sit down and prep out a session from start to finish, show what you do and give us insight into the whole process. I actually find there's a real lack, for me especially, of good resources on how to run a place with lots of NPCs and how to really prepare for a big town. Do you make a potential scene for every single location? It seems daunting.

    • @LunchBreakHeroes
      @LunchBreakHeroes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I never know what my players are going to do, planning out scenes is pretty futile. Instead, I just make a note of what NPCs are where, what their motivations and personality are, and improvise to the best of my ability.

    This is excellent work. If your looking for something a little more lore accurate... The Curse of Strahd adventure looks like a poor mash up of the original Hickman module and the Campaign setting books that came later. The town and castle are obviously from the original module which hinted that Barovia is alone in the mist, but all the extended stuff suggests that the campaign setting lore is still canon.
    The actual map suggests that Curse of Strahd takes place after Gundarak was absorbed by Barovia. (btw, half the domain map is cut off in the adventure book) Both Rudolf Van Richten and Esmerelda come from the domain of Darken, which likely means Barovia has neighbors, which is Borca to the north, Forlorn and Kartakass to the south, Nova Vaasa to the east and Invidia to the west. These would all have cultural influences on Barovia.
    -The town of Barovia is clearly classic Romanian (there maybe some middle eastern influence from before Strahd. The town of Barovia and Castle Ravenloft was the seat of power for a Turkish inspired dictator).
    -Vallaki is near the Borca border which was formed by the Dilisnya family. Borca is a French renaissance influenced domain. The people would have a more French sounding accent.
    -Vallaki Vistani are not from the same clan is Madam Eva (which is why they don't have the same protection). The fact Van Richten is attempting to murder them suggests they are from the same clan that sold his son into vampire slavery and murdered him. (Long story, but Richten was resurrected and the Vistani elder became a minor domain lord) . There are 4 or 5 clans of Vistani, all from different prime material planes. This particular clan is evil and has no real culture associated with them, so Irish works.
    -Krezk is a little harder to pin down. It too once shared a border with Borca. However, it now shares a border with Invidia, which is inspired by Fascist Italy. Their isolationism and distrust of others lends heavily to this influence.
    -The Druids and the people around the south temple are clearly from Forlorn which is southwest of the domain. Forlorn takes its inspiration from Scottish traditions, particularly druidic.
    Madam Eva's Vistani are from the same prime world as Strahd and should have the same Romanian accent. However, the Vistani are showmen and should speak with theatrics with fluctuating high and low tones as well as speeding up and slowing down their voices for emphasis.
    Other cultural influences
    -Gundarak, which existed to the southwest of Barovia before being absorbed was German. They are mostly in the south which is not a region visited in the Curse of Strahd adventure.
    -To the east of the town of Barovia is the border of Nova Vaasa which is Byzantium. This area is also not visited in the adventure.
    -To the south is Kartakass which is a heavy trading partner and is a Robinhood era England.
    -Prior to Strahd retaking his ancestral home, it was occupied by a foreign peoples which were modeled after the real world Ottoman Turks that invaded Romania. A middle eastern accent wouldn't be out of place in the domain.

      @jaysw9585 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      BTW, Ravenloft is by far my favorite Campaign setting. I have been running it since the first box set back in 1990. I am glad to see its resurgence 30 years later. I spent a lot of time on pin-pointing the exact cultures and culture levels in every domain. The Ravenloft Gazetteers are really good at breaking these down.

    The only gripe I have - and it's a year old video, so it's not a huge complaint, but one I feel worth noting - is that the Vistani are based on the Roma people, not Romanians. The Roma were displaced from their homes in India, and were called 'gypsies' (which was used as a racial slur against them) because they were mistakenly believed to have come from Egypt.

    • @VanNessy97
      @VanNessy97 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah! And because of that, I still want some advice (primarily from actual Roma people) on how to handle the Vistani characters as an allegory to the Roma experience. Mainly, how can I go about it *without* Doing A Racism? This is a question that I'm convinced an actual Roma person would know how best to answer.

    Rudolph Van Richten is also heavily inspired by Abraham Van Helsing from Dracula. There's a fantastic audiobook of Dracula where the narrator gives him a musical Dutch accent to fit the character. I try to incorporate that: light and whimsical when he's in disguise as Rictavio, dark and withdrawn when he's Van Richten.

    Your accents are NOT what I was expecting! You nailed each and every one, and best of all, they are all extremely distinct and would give the players a good idea of what areas people could be from when they might meet someone on the road.
    I also liked some of the mannerisms you threw in that were not strictly accents, Donavich out of breath for example. Those are the kinds of things I’m trying to use liberally since I am absolutely the WORST at accents.

    I'm currently DMing Curse of Strahd and indeed I have been using a Slavic accent the entire time since 2018. I like what you did although considering the main NPC's names are all Slavic sounding I go with the Slavic accent across the board...there are characters that enter Barovia who enter from outside like Rudolph Von Richten that I give a more Sean Connery Accent, if the character is not native it gives the players a clue as to the foreign identity of the character NPC.

  • @paulcoy9060
    @paulcoy9060 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Barovia isn't closed to entry, so other PCs and NPCs have been coming here for centuries, (and failing to kill Strahd) if that''s how the DM is running the adventure. New words and phrases might have populated their languages, and there should also be other races and religions present. In my game, there is an enclave of Halflings in the south, very secretive, that will help if you can find them.

    • @LunchBreakHeroes

    Love it. I use Pain from Naruto for my Strahd. Argynvostholt and wizards of wine please. My thought for the former is to bait it by having the knights corrupted becoming Strahd personal army as long as he has the skull. As they first approach the crossroad to the castle they encounter Avrik the last knight bound to a post skin flayed, the birds have been eating him like the Greek legend. He is screaming a challenge to Strahd that this torture won't break him and he will destroy him and free the knights. If they free him a swarm of bats attack, after combat he states the head location and I also added the heart is in a monster (Mathilda). He runs to the castle never to be seen again and the players have a few hooks about the place, what do you think?
    I have nothing to really draw them to the winery and make it pop, so winery first please. Love your content

    • @LunchBreakHeroes
      @LunchBreakHeroes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Winery is definitely on the roadmap! Argynvostholt's going to be next. Your idea with Avrik is a really cool one, and sounds like it'd be fun to play. I'm currently going with a them of "Love versus Hate". Pitting Godfrey's love against Vladimir's hate and tangling in the other revenants seems like a very thematically cool idea to me.

    • @Spike1988ish
      @Spike1988ish 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I also like that. Very interested in your take. I wonder how you will work with the fact Vladimir has authority over Godfrey? A side note on Godfrey I have him hiding in plain sight from Strahd, he obeys all commands given but has use enough of his mind to be as least efficient in executing his orders as possible

    • @Rednaskela1418
      @Rednaskela1418 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps because each community is very close nit, and not alot of travel between towns.

    • @LunchBreakHeroes
      @LunchBreakHeroes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like @Rednaskela said, there isn't a lot of travel in between the settlements, which can cause differences in accents over a long period of time.
      Although I haven't stated as much in the videos, my Barovia is three times the size of what's specified in the module. I'm running it the same size as described in the Ravenloft novels. So it's an even farther and more difficult journey between settlements.
      And, really, it's all just baseless suggestions. If you wanted, everyone could sound like a southern Texan and the game would work out just fine. :-)

    • @jaysw9585

      @@LunchBreakHeroes The Curse of Strahd map is not the complete map. There is actually a section of Barovia to the south and east that is cut off in the Curse of Strahd adventure. You see a little bit of the east when the adventure first starts outside the gate on the Old Saravich road. Your pushed west, but there is a settlement to the east. Similarly, if you look on the Curse of Strahd map, the road continues south on the west side of the map. There is actually a whole other region of Barovia down there past Mount Ghakas that is not included in this adventure. It was likely left off because the region is outside the scope of the adventure.

    Based off the names i want to go with russian, nordic, germanic, and other surrounding countries kind of accents. Basically eastern european. For the Vastani, I want to go with Italian, or generally more eastern accents. I dunno why but with the looks and names we are given, i get a southern italian, maybe sicilian vibe?
    Rudolph could be from the british isles, sort of separating him from the rest of Barovia, as the accents of the islands are much different from the rest if europe, and also ties him in with that classic d&d tone, since for some reason everyone is british. Unless you're a dwarf, then for some reason you're Scottish.

    Speaking as a Quaker, I don't think you know a great deal about Quakers. While it would probably depend a bit on which sect of Quakerism you were looking at, Quakers never were known for being a particularly insular group. You may be thinking of the Amish or Mennonites. Quakers have never had a practice of separating themselves from mainstream culture, and the branch of Quakerism I'm affiliated with - Liberal Friends - which makes up roughly half the Quakers in the United States, are pretty much secular and/or universalist without any strict dogma.
    For reference point, there are Quakers who are non-theists, express belief or connection to multiple religions (Juddaism, Wiccan, Islam, Buddhism, etc.) and more. As far as religions go, that is about as open as you can get.
    Just sharing that with you in case you are curious and wanted to learn more. Best to you and thanks for your videos.
