Couldn't agree more. Both the first Resident Evil and Silent Hill chapter were revolutionary for the game and brought in a massive amount of new players. I'm also pretty nostalgic for both as playing during the release of those chapters with my best friend during the summer are some of the fondest memories I have from that time
I got into dbd because of resident evil! My boyfriend begged me for years and years to just try it and I wouldn’t, then we played re5 and re4 back to back and he was like “you know, you can play as Leon in dead by daylight and I’m pretty sure there’s a Sheva skin” and now I play more than him
This discussion about old Eyrie, Cowshed, Mother’s Dwelling makes me think it’s time for another map breakdown! Your last one helped me learn some new loops.
Watch Mr. TatorHead here on TH-cam. The man has multi-hour guides on how to run specific maps. I went from getting downed after running the killer for 10 seconds to running the killer well enough that they either give up chase or continue chasing me and give up gens. Not entirely sure this is the kind of content you're looking for but I seriously can't recommend this guy enough. Mr. TatorHead teaches you how to play DbD from the survivor side and often even points out what killers can do on certain loops. His RPD guide made it one of my favorite maps because of how hilariously broken some of the loops are!
Otz... You are so validating. I'm a writer, and when I brought up the fact that South America doesn't have crows and BHVR's writing felt lazy on Reddit, I got TORN APART, belittled, etc. Just figured I mentioned something that didn't matter and deserved the negativity, and the fact that years later, you pointed out the same issue as relevant enough to the chapter's quality... Man, I could cry lmao. 😭
Bit of a late response but nowadays it's generally assumed that the fact that there are crows in south america is supposed to simbolize the Entities influence over the Artist early on her life already, its called subtle foreshadowing
@@davidatlas123 Yeah, the meaning of the crows has been very apparent from the start. :) But I went to school for literature and have been writing and editing for 20 years, and if BHVR had known this fact about South America, they would've definitely mentioned it in Carmina's bio (referring to the crows as strange, for example). They've recently done it in the current tome, but I believe that's more of a correction on their part than something they envisioned over two years ago. But that's just good writing: acknowledging when something doesn't make sense, even subtly, and adding that to the tone, especially in horror writing. When something like that is a basic detail that's inconsistent with your premise and you don't acknowledge it, it implies you probably didn't know the detail to begin with. That's the equivalent of an American writer telling an European story where opossums are present; it's very odd and out of place, even if thematically relevant, and should be acknowledged as such.
@@morganwilliams7717 Fair points all, still tho I'd wager that on some works the foreshadowing of details is not made explicit by a "wink wink" type of text of "and the crows were odd btw, theres no crows in the region" Consider it as a sorta fridge easter egg where some readers would know the fact and realize its the entities meddling(due to it being tied to crows), and those who don't notice, well it doesnt change the narrative for them I wouldn't say that acknoledging it alone mades it good writing, its different formulas, specially considering the ambiguity used in horror themes, my memory is a bit vague rn but iirc in the mountains of madness novel theres mentions of penguins in an area where its not their natural habitat. In story this is to imply/foreshadow how the eldritch creature moved them around for experimentation as they later show mutated, but theres no line saying "How odd, penguins aren't native of this place", it's different ways of storytelling i feel Ofc tho we can never know since theres not been an official commentary if it was intentional or not, and they've done some very poor lore before so it wouldnt be impossible
@@davidatlas123 Yeah, when I said to imply it, it's more along the lines of it makes sense for young Carmina to not know what a crow is and call it a strange bird instead. Good writers wouldn't never shove the details down your throat by specifically saying it's not native to the region. To me, it was that first casual mention of her childhood self feeding the crow that gives away that BHVR probably didn't fact check. But either way, we'll never really know, and the Entity's influence is clearly there regardless. Also don't know if you remember it, but in the initial launch of the chapter, her lore mentioned after her hands were cut off, she struggled against her wrist restraints. BHVR's writing that chapter was a bit sloppier than the majority of previous ones, at least the lore I'd read prior.
I would be shocked if Carmina wouldnt know what a crow is? Just becauase fauna isn't native doesn't mean someone wont know. Honestly it wouldnt surpise me if she saw it and thought too much. I have seen native parrots in the UK thanks to invasive species lol @morganwilliams7717
1:19:36 Actually, on release Victor could just pounce at a locker and he would injure the survivor inside. They added it after the PTB but never said anything about it, but I think it's because the locker grab animation (which they had already annouced at that point) wasn't ready yet but they wanted to add some form of counterplay to survivors just hopping into lockers.
It's really nice to see how the recent chapters have been consistently good. I took a break from the game when the Alien chapter released and when I came back I was surprised at how good the new additions were. It was exciting sense the last break I took was between project w and tools of torment.
I too play with breaks. Usually around one year and comeback for events. The game does not have the addictive nature, let's say, Battlefield 1 has for me.
Another reason the Saw chapter was a good impact on the game was it was the first time you finally had a second objective in the game. Before Pig the only other interactions you could have with a Killer was breaking Trappers traps and light burning the Nurse, Wraith, and Hag's traps. Also Make your Choice combined with BBQ was a good push to not tunnel and camp the hook. Considering you went against a lot of Bubba's this wasn't a bad thing at all.
Oh man, i so love this type of videos when you bring someone and discuss random things. That somehow feels very cozy (although it does feel like you're a bit nervous)
I started playing when Blight was new, and returned when Xeno was added. Took a long break, but decided to come back and its been fun playing Killer, never played killer when I first started playing. The major reason I returned, aside from boredom, was because of Singularity! His charm and design is awesome, I'm a fan of playing monster killers, so a killer robot is up my alley!

Totally worth it! :D ❤️ I can nearly agree with all of it, even if I like to play knight. Objectively speaking, my tier list would probably look similar. Have a great weekend and thanks both of you 😊
1:31:00 i would also like to add. The stutter wasnt only at random times, it also happened whenever a killer performed an action, including power, gen kicking, hooking, swinging and way more
Saw WAS what brought me to dbd. I know she was kind of a no one when the movie came out in terms of horror but Amanda is my favorite and the second i heard she was there so was I.
02:53:40 I love the Xenomorph, it is my main player after Nemesis. But personally, when the chapter released I was taking a long break from the game and I didn't come back when Xeno released because every survivor and their mothers were running the perk "Made For This" before the nerf.
Otz, I would like to point out that what you said about Artist having a ''crow power'' and crows not existing in South America aren't related. Pixel Bush did a video on her, apparently, she was meant to be a ''political'' character, an activist. The crow imagery is probably taken from the book ''La danza de los cuervos'' that talks about the chilean dictatorship lead by Augusto Pinochet. It's likely that she was inspired by a real life artist, Victor Jara, who was arrested during that time and had his hands broken to prevent him from writing.
@@mattiacicchetti3778 I mean, I love that they went to real life events to get inspiration. However, they still failed in how they portrayed her. The chilean dictatorship should have been the context of her lore explicitly, the horrors that Pinochet brought to Chile should have been addressed, with no room for misunderstandings. It takes away the importance of her character in the political side. I get it tho, Behaviour doesn't wanna get political. However, she had potential to be an INCREDIBLY written character. I have no doubt that if she was an activist against Pinochet's dictatorship and explicitly had her arms and tongue severed by government agents in the lore, A LOT of people would have been drawn to her. A message like that is simply too powerful to overlook.
One of my favorite chapters and the one I started playing on was Demise of the Faithful. Many killers nowadays feel like a hodgepodge of other killers, but not plague. She has a uniqueness to her, something I haven't felt in killer designs in awhile.
One thing I remember from the Silent Hill release was how cool Midwich was aesthetically, not from a gameplay standpoint. I was just stricken by how eerie and atmospheric it was when I loaded into it for the first time, and it has super cool sound design with the rattling corpses and sirens and clock tower and stuff
I think Cope’s definition of generic is different from mine. He used it to describe both Garden of Joy and Eerie of Crows, and those are 2 of the most visually unique and layout unique maps in the game so I dont really see that. Neither of them are great maps but I cant see a world where they are “generic”.
the unknown is the only chapter that got people who never heard of dbd to still talk about it over a month after it was released. It was a really well made chapter and deserves to be placed way higher
i love artist the :c also, as a chilean, i don't know who told you there are no crows in south america, but that's a lie. i don't know about the rest of south and central america, but at least in Chile, there are crows, i can link you to the national ornitologist archive lol. you can see them in person too, we are a country with a very big diversity of species and weathers because of the shape and location of the country. And carmina is also a pretty iconic chilean name, actually my best friend's name is carmina, and she went to art college with me haha, what are the ods. Straight hair and white skin is common too. Like if i, a chilean, feels at home with her depiction, what are you doing saying it's not south american enough lol. I might be wrong, but i think the confussion honestly comes from ignorance. many people think of south america as brazil, or central america. more "caribean" countries if you will. but Chile has always had a more isolated history, is a VERY long country, so if you ask to a chilean up north they'll tell you it's nothing but desert, in the middle they'll say it's a valley, at the south it will be like winter forests, tundra, cold rivers, etc. You can and will find crows, and our artistic history is very rich for such a young, relatively speaking, country. I was actually susprised when this chapter came out, because usually south americans get grouped up as a unit under that stereotypical "latino" profile that many americans and europeans picture when talking about us, when they are talking about a big continent full of countries where some even hate one another lol....and i insist, they really did hit a mark with the artist's personality and profile and details conecting to chile. A weirdo cold artist surrounded by birds? yeah pretty chilean in my eyes lol, we are often seen as the opposite of your friendly warm countries down here lol. It makes sense. And our most iconic native tribes come from the south too: from were our best artists, poets, etc were from too, and were you are likely to find crows. Edit her background as a mural artist who proceeded to protest? that is mirroring our iconic art movement in the 80's down to a T, under a military regime and corruption just like her lore, including the fact that they were a lot of female artists among them.I can see why it's not for everyone, it is less flashy, but i appreciate it a lot.
Very insightful comment! I had no idea Chile was a colder place. I started playing Artist today actually and she kicks ass, glad to know you feel represented as a Chilean
I know the Knight chapter was really messy on release but I wouldnt call it a complete disaster. I really like Vittorio, if I'm not mistaken he's the survivor to be released with the most skins, even if they are just recolors, he is aesthetically pleasing and he's a time traveler which is cool.
Crazy to think that Otz and i started playing the game at a similar time, ive watched the game since release but the Saw chapter was what cemented me i have to pick this up even if i use almost nothing from the Saw chapter these days in terms of perks or characters. Im so grateful for it getting me into this game i love so much. :)
This video is amazing. Thank you for this thorough analysis. To think this video isn't an OFFICIAL media and was made pure out of love it both makes me happy and really sad at the same time. BHVR should worry more about making the game friendly rather than skin collections and the ingame store. Thank you Otz and Cope and the people working behind this.
You could actually hear Spirit's footsteps while she phased. So there was "technically" some counterplay to prayer beads but good luck hearing that over the generator noise. I do remember a couple occasions where I could hear her walking by in phase
1:51:50 I have to hard disagree here. I don't think that The Artist's story is super well written, BUT the fact that she's from Chile and yet there are crows is amazing and very much done on purpose. It proofs 100 % that the entity has been watching her and "guiding" her all this time.
1:47:40 "It [Boon: COH] destroyed the meta for like 6 months." No Otz, Boon: Circle of Healing nearly destroyed THE ENTIRE GAME over those 6 months. As of this comment, DBD STILL hasn't recovered all of the players lost from the day they released Boon Circle of Healing and the New MMR system. To put into perspective just how badly BHVR screwed up starting with Hour of the Witch, they lost over SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT of their active player base between October 2021 and February 2022. It wasn't just any drop either, just prior to Hour of the Witch, DBD had achieved its all time peak of popularity; a figure they have not even come close to matching, let alone exceeding since then. So if any chapter on this list deserves the Disastrous label, it's Hour of the Witch and A Portrait of Murder swiftly thereafter, because the changes made to DBD back then lead directly to the largest decline DBD ever saw, and was so bad it nearly killed the game outright. Looking on the brighter side of things, BHVR did finally learn their lesson and stopped taking Killer main player for granted after years of unilaterally favoring survivors. They have made some mistakes in that time (Knight and especially Skull Merchant) and even today, I think they've gone a bit too far in nerfing Survivors. But it beats the hell out of what we had in late 2021 and early 2022: Being trapped in a match with four unkillable teabagging assholes just because you foolishly didn't lock in a hyper-sweaty or scummy meta-killer build.
It's kinda silly to me that the Clown chapter is in the same tier as the Huntress and Saw chapters... Like the Clown's additions are all mainstays of the game nowadays and have been since launch, basically. Pop Goes the Weasel is *the* slowdown perk. Windows of Opportunity is *the* survivor perk. Clown is *the* horrible meme killer. The map has Maurice on it and it's been a fine map all this time. Meanwhile, no one plays Pig, no one picks the perks from that DLC, and the map has been *problematic* its whole existence. No one takes huntress' perks. And David,s perks have been outright detrimental to the game. There's a clearly defined line between these chapters.
Otz, in case nobody mentioned it yet, the timestamp tags for Ash vs. Evil Dead and Demise of the Faithful are reversed in the video!! Also great job as always, love hearing about the history of the game and your and Cope's different experiences ❤
Some of my favorite chapters are All-Kill/Roots of Dredge and All Things Wicked. The reasoning behind it's very simple really, just the Thematic of the chapters The Trickster it's this insane psychopath that you hear laugh when he goes wild with the knives. The Dredge it's the most eerie killer i believe? (even if in gameplay isn't the best, hes theme just fits almost to perfection with DbD) The Unknown i mean his theme it's pretty well put in-game and has the great gameplay to go alongside. In most cases anyway i'm just here for the Vibe of the chapter and honestly, i really want to see how the killer sounds/moves around and all that and how Faithfull can they recreate it (stomping from an Undetectable Nemesis). Does that mean that the 3 chapters i listed above are the best? (hell no, i mean look at Trickster) but just seeing The Spirit passive phase while your a Quentin hiding in a corner or The Xenomorph trying to sniff the survivors around it's just a vibe. Hearing the vaccum from The Dredge while being barely able to see it's certainly a feel just like almost breaking my hand against The Unknown because he teleported to the one goddam Husk i was trying to dispel. I could go on and on about each chapter and the vibe we got from that one, but we all know that the best chapter it's Tools of Torment and we hope to never get one like that again.
i feel like a lot contributed to the Alien chapter being disregarded, we just had 3 original killers in a row which everyone knows usually doesnt go well, especially with the disaster of knight and merchant one after another, survivors had just come off the gen kick meta and end transmission was not rlly popular, on top of that killers had to deal with mft too so a lot of the playerbase just felt super burnt out since the last 3 chapters had all had major issues for both sides and people just wanted a break. Such a shame too bc alien was such a huge license to get and obviously a lot of work went into it
And when he did, it was some questionable things, lol. Him saying old skull merchant was less toxic was so out of touch, how can someone say that with a straight face
One thing I would like to add about the stranger things DLC is that on this horror game, licenses tend to be more mid-age player oriented. 16/20 yo players probably never watched Nightmare on Elm Street or Saw3. But it was amazing getting to play as the most watched Netflix Series characters, and it is nearly the only way to play as them because they don't have any other game that's remarkable.
otz, before i started watching you i had no girlfriend. then i got one, but she cheated on me so i dumped her. but you still here. otz, will you marry me?
Only thing I'd say about unknown is that it certainly feels like you cant get weakness off of you before he can shoot you again. And since he doesnt have to be spot on accurate like huntress it feels bad when you get downed right as you had a sliver of weakness left to dissipate.
It’s pretty trippy hearing from a guy who played from the beta version all the way to now through every change. Wasn’t subbed to him before but I am now. Otz should do a big shoutout video for DBD channels he likes.

@@izzyreads2930I would have 10k hours in fucking Pac-man if you could play as Leon in it, I don't blame you.

@@morganwilliams7717 Fair points all, still tho I'd wager that on some works the foreshadowing of details is not made explicit by a "wink wink" type of text of "and the crows were odd btw, theres no crows in the region"
Consider it as a sorta fridge easter egg where some readers would know the fact and realize its the entities meddling(due to it being tied to crows), and those who don't notice, well it doesnt change the narrative for them
I wouldn't say that acknoledging it alone mades it good writing, its different formulas, specially considering the ambiguity used in horror themes, my memory is a bit vague rn but iirc in the mountains of madness novel theres mentions of penguins in an area where its not their natural habitat. In story this is to imply/foreshadow how the eldritch creature moved them around for experimentation as they later show mutated, but theres no line saying "How odd, penguins aren't native of this place", it's different ways of storytelling i feel
Ofc tho we can never know since theres not been an official commentary if it was intentional or not, and they've done some very poor lore before so it wouldnt be impossible
YES! More Otz and Cope! My fav collab on this website lmao, keep em coming
Props to you for taking breaks! I do something similar and it makes me excited to play when I come back
I skipped like 3 chapters and I’m ready to grind again. Breaks are def needed for this game.
I too play with breaks. Usually around one year and comeback for events. The game does not have the addictive nature, let's say, Battlefield 1 has for me.
@@justwatch7091 bf1 had me hooked the entire cycle of that game. Flawless honestly. Maybe even better than bf3.
Otz and cope has to be one of my favorite duos. Keep up the amazing work!

1:31:00 i would also like to add. The stutter wasnt only at random times, it also happened whenever a killer performed an action, including power, gen kicking, hooking, swinging and way more
For me it was kinda funny bc when I experienced the stutter it was at perk activation so I knew when bt or dh procced
Close to 1M Otz! Glad to be here, keep it up!

Saw WAS what brought me to dbd. I know she was kind of a no one when the movie came out in terms of horror but Amanda is my favorite and the second i heard she was there so was I.
Love the long forms. Thank you, you two ❤
I live for these multi hour long videos!!!❤❤❤
Finally someone said the truth. The disrespect to Purtrait of a Murder is unbelievable
@@gabrielborges7129 Still, it is my third favorite chapter

One of my favorite chapters and the one I started playing on was Demise of the Faithful. Many killers nowadays feel like a hodgepodge of other killers, but not plague. She has a uniqueness to her, something I haven't felt in killer designs in awhile.
What is hodgepodge?
@@mitchsz a confused mixture
I'm more of a Ghostface fan myself.
One thing I remember from the Silent Hill release was how cool Midwich was aesthetically, not from a gameplay standpoint. I was just stricken by how eerie and atmospheric it was when I loaded into it for the first time, and it has super cool sound design with the rattling corpses and sirens and clock tower and stuff
would have been more fun if this was an XY axis of "impact on the game" and "good or bad" or something like that
my fav thing about watching these videos in reminiscing about when i started, for me was chains of hate and its taking me down memory lane
Cope's opinions are certainly something...
You could actually hear Spirit's footsteps while she phased. So there was "technically" some counterplay to prayer beads but good luck hearing that over the generator noise.
I do remember a couple occasions where I could hear her walking by in phase
Chests and chest perks must be buffed.
otz and cope this is amazing i cant wait to spend my saturday watching this while thinking about playing dbd
I really love the collabs with Cope, he has such a unique perspective
almost 1mil here big guy, I'm excited I started watching in like August and love your videos
I was really interested in what Cope had to say. Guess ill wait til next time 🤣
1:51:50 I have to hard disagree here. I don't think that The Artist's story is super well written, BUT the fact that she's from Chile and yet there are crows is amazing and very much done on purpose. It proofs 100 % that the entity has been watching her and "guiding" her all this time.
Dredge and Singularity need so much love, the first for a buff, and the second for more cosmetic and little buff/adjustement about the IEM
1:47:40 "It [Boon: COH] destroyed the meta for like 6 months."
No Otz, Boon: Circle of Healing nearly destroyed THE ENTIRE GAME over those 6 months.
End Transmission ON TOP 🗣🗣🗣
Felicidades por el millón otz, se que en teoría aun no llegas pero muchas gracias por todo tu contenido :)
Some of my favorite chapters are All-Kill/Roots of Dredge and All Things Wicked. The reasoning behind it's very simple really, just the Thematic of the chapters
The Trickster it's this insane psychopath that you hear laugh when he goes wild with the knives.
The Dredge it's the most eerie killer i believe? (even if in gameplay isn't the best, hes theme just fits almost to perfection with DbD)
The Unknown i mean his theme it's pretty well put in-game and has the great gameplay to go alongside.
Hard agree on all points. Vibe and theme is far more important to me than anything else.
Holy shit. I havent seen cope sonce the perk review episode but now he looks like the one cool uncle at thanksgiving
Skull merchant just sitting at the bottom of tier list 🤣🤣
The lowest position on the list is too high for her
Waow! That 1 million subs is pretty close dude!
COPE IS GOATED!!!!
i feel like a lot contributed to the Alien chapter being disregarded, we just had 3 original killers in a row which everyone knows usually doesnt go well, especially with the disaster of knight and merchant one after another, survivors had just come off the gen kick meta and end transmission was not rlly popular, on top of that killers had to deal with mft too so a lot of the playerbase just felt super burnt out since the last 3 chapters had all had major issues for both sides and people just wanted a break. Such a shame too bc alien was such a huge license to get and obviously a lot of work went into it
Felt like Cope had nothing to say...
And when he did, it was some questionable things, lol. Him saying old skull merchant was less toxic was so out of touch, how can someone say that with a straight face

how does someone have 10k hours in the game but hasn’t played all the killers lol
Forged in fog being my favorite chapter then “is this everyone’s lease favorite chapter”
One thing I would like to add about the stranger things DLC is that on this horror game, licenses tend to be more mid-age player oriented. 16/20 yo players probably never watched Nightmare on Elm Street or Saw3.
But it was amazing getting to play as the most watched Netflix Series characters, and it is nearly the only way to play as them because they don't have any other game that's remarkable.
i was rewatching all your videos with cope thats nice
otz, before i started watching you i had no girlfriend. then i got one, but she cheated on me so i dumped her. but you still here. otz, will you marry me?
I just realized you're almost at 1mil?!? Congrats man! I swear the last time I looked you were only at a hundred thousand?! That's amazing 😁
Watching him talk right next to a guy like cope really makes you appreciate otz's insight doesnt it
