    Idk if you’ll see this, but Coach Curtis; your genuine compassion for the players of this game shines through with every video and every session. You sincerely care and have a drive to make better League players and just functional human beings in society. Your detail, work ethic, and effort radiates through every video. I’ve learned more than I could have ever hoped for with your videos and I just want to express that gratitude. You are an absolutely phenomenal human being with big goals and a big heart. This video alone helped me realize and expose a few of my inner, more subtle behaviors than can help me improve. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re changing the League landscape one video at a time.

    I completely agree with feeling as a therapist. There are some friends in my friend list that when I play with, I feel like I'm trying to cheer my 5-year old cousin because they just cry/complain all the time. Instead of being 2 bros going all out against enemy team and trying to make the best our of our teammates, he just flames our teammates and thinks that the enemies are gods.

    I feel that therapy point. I coach and I graduated with a psychology degree, and all too often coaching devolves into a therapy session.
    When people say they have mental block I ask them if they're getting enough sleep, to which the answer is usually no. Then I ask about whether they're hydrated, getting exercise, etc. This becomes, "well I have depression" and that's when you know it's not coaching anymore.
    In my experiences most of the people that want coaching have unresolved issues and they're conflating their ranking to these issues. "I'm not good enough" isn't just referring to the fact they're in silver.
    Idk. I literally talked to one of these people an hour ago so the topic is fresh on my mind and I felt compelled to share.

    • @joeysung311
      @joeysung311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you think at some point the right thing to do is to tell them "you're not ready for coaching right now, you have these other problems that are in the way of you improving in league, you should look for a different kind of help"?
      Just wondering, I'm sure it's a pretty awkward/difficult situation for the coach

    • @Codsbestsniper
      @Codsbestsniper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeysung311 it's really tough to say. Illness manifests in different ways. Some people are willing to listen and need to hear it, and some subconsciously push you away if you say it. Some just get coaching because they want someone to validate that they're garbage (yes, that's actually a thing).
      I told the guy from earlier that he needs to take better care of himself and that he's not garbage and I was told I was just sugarcoating reality.
      The treatment you give should be based on the person and it's tough to know what to say to everyone.

    Hi man,
    First of all I'm gonna preventively sorry for my English which is not perfect because I'm from Italy.
    I wanna thank you so much for all this kind of content because it really helped me playing league in a healthier way and and love the game even more having a little taste of what a competitive way of playing is like.
    I wanna add just one thing to the second behaviour:
    If you struggle with selfconfidence in league of legends it's probably because either
    1 you give too much weight to the game
    Or 2 you're just not confident in your life, and if this is the case then I recommend as a friend to go to a psychologist and talk, maybe even get to therapy.
    Having a healthy relationship with yourself and being confident in your abilities means living a better life, not necessarily league-correlated.
    Don't be afraid of going deep on yourself because maybe league is just an alarm of something not healthy outside of it.
    Just a tip from someone who experienced this in first person.
    Have a nice day everyone, good climb!

    one thing that helped me to start watching my replays when i was tilted was to watch them a few days after i player the games. Usually when im tilted and i watch my replays on the same day i tend to blame my teammates or to not pay too much atention to my mistakes. But when i watch my replays after a week or just a few days, the tilt is just gone and i can truly see the result of the game for what it is and not with a "victim" mindset.

    Bro, youre a great coach, not only explaining so many connections and interactions but finding the real problems behind so many things and people have, this video being an example.
    I realized myself how i get calmer and more focused on game basics and real problems instead of emotional blaming after watching a Video here thinking more of strategies and consequences.
    That tends to change again a while after, specially following unfair feeling lose streaks, so please dont stop making Videos. :D
    Edit: my personal obsession and problem with people is if they dont want to play the game, giving up, flaming and dragging the others down. One side of the lane has to lose, its not the problem if the own side is the one, the problem is refusing just to deal with the situation and instead blaming and giving up.

    When I was starting to really get into lol, I basically became the scapegoat for a friend group I was in. This led me to be scared of performing poorly because it was so ingrained in me that I would get flamed, leading to me being scared of playing ranked or trying out new things and having low self-esteem around my abilities. I have known this has been an issue for a long time, since losing games leads to more anxiety, and therefore I haven't played ranked for a month. At least. But I haven't had any idea what to do about it. So thanks for posting this. It has given me motivation again to break this mindset.

  • @Ridley_Prime
    @Ridley_Prime 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Curtis, wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos. Have really helped me both in game and personally.
    One thing I’m struggling with currently is doing what I set out to do in-game. I’ll watch my games back and see I made a mistake, I’ll write down what that mistake was in a little document and reflect on it. I’ll put the document up on my second monitor, or maybe a visual to be a reminder for myself. But when I get into game, I end up just not remembering, either because I’m too focused on something else or I just don’t remember. I start beating up on myself that I’ve literally made something actionable for me to improve on and failed to do it. I can’t see myself even working toward the goals I set out for myself in game, yelling at the guy in the replay.
    Maybe its because the change is so subtle that I don’t notice that I’m actually better than I was a week, a month ago.
    Current example: I’m not using my trinkets at 3 minutes. I end up sitting on two wards for such a long time. I talked to multiple coaches - about where to ward, when to ward, how warding influences what you can do and how you want to tailor your vision for what you want to do with your lane. And then I’m just thinking about the lane phase and trades and my lane opponent and my abilities and testing my current champion identity theory - stuff that I already should know and shouldn’t have to consciously think about, right? I end up overloading my brain on all the things to think about, all the variables, and struggle to focus on one thing at a time because so many things are so interconnected and each concept is a process etc etc. Then I’m not looking at the minimap, or if I do, don’t process the information. I have so much trouble on isolating a specific learning objective and then acting on it. Am I just doing things in the wrong order, or moving too fast? How do I know I’ve internalized something enough to leave it off / at the bottom of my mental stack? If I’m doing so many things wrong, how do I improve on each one sequentially? How do I stop overthinking shit? Think you could make a video on this, or is there one that already addresses this that I’ve missed?

    Thank you so much for making a video about self-sabotaging! I'm struggeling with this for so long now. Often times I didn't even do reviews because I thought "it doesn't matter anyway" but it was just my subsconcious telling me that "I don't have what it takes" or that "I am just not talented enough" just like you mentioned in the second example. Wow Curtis, amazing video. You are always on point.
    You describe some of my solo queue problems like "past seasons performance entitlement". You could make a single video on that.
    I think the reason that you can't compare your actual perfomance to your other seasons perfomances is that this game is constantly changing and age, reflexes and not being updating concepts on a regular basis play a major role. People may be playing the game all day during year, meanwhile you come after a break and think "you deserve" your past rank. Understanding this has relieved me of some mental pressure related to league.
    I feel like each season is different, and I need to play some nice quantity of games before getting tuned again. And game is getting harder everytime. Like gold is now old platinum. You could make other video on that too, since it helps with the perfomance pressure and solo q anxiety

    I know this video is years old but it is still very helpful. I do ALL of these things and then step away from league for long periods just to come after 1 year and of course I have lost all of my progress by then. I noticed though that I have way less ranked anxiety than I usually have and I figure it is because I challenged myself to "just play" for the victorious skin that was reserved for gold + players (which I've never been). I think it is very very neat to be able to earn the skin by playing a lot of ranked games even in Bronze and it motivated me to just put in the games, telling myself "it doesnt matter if I win, I just need to play games". Watching this video it was probably still not the most helpful approach, focussing on improvement would have been even better, but I was amazed that I played almost 200 games this season, something I have NEVER done, not even close. I wondered why I lost so many LP recently and I realize now, it is because I earned these points already and after reaching this goal, everything went downhill, I didn't even notice the connection until now. I am back to focussing on winning, on LP and I am worse for it.
    So, I just wanted to say thank you for this video, it is really helpful! I struggle with negative self-talk from mental health issues that have nothing to do with League, but certainly influence my League experience. I still find it difficult to critically review myself while not beating myself up.

The thought that I had in my head while listening to you was "I am bad at the game in many ways that I can't even imagine. And Coach Curtis said he don't coach people below gold, so I am doomed - not being able to recognise my mistakes and without external help." It returns me to the "setting a process" thing you talk about, I think. I do agree that mentality is a huge part in getting better, I feel it from my own experience, can relate to many things in this video, especially to "I don't have it" and "I will never get better at league, I am not able, and to top it off - I am aging". And not that surprising - the same things happens in other parts in my life like you mentioned about your own struggles with gym and other things. And that's where it really goes into therapist's domain - you need to fix a person first, the problem is outside of the game. It is good that you point to it and make people more aware, that's why I value your work and videos that much.

    i was D3 in S2 or S4 (can't even remember) and now i returned and stuck in silver - people just hella good at this game, my ego in under attack so hard, i play without really trying cuz 'I belong to diamond' but actually not anymore

    I acualy taught to mysalf about these types of concepts and i am verry glad i hera it from someone who does this with passion and doesnt care about charging money ... i realy appriciate your effort to make this community a better place , but i will say that mental strength is probably 40 % of your general strength / ability to be better at the game ... the other 60 % is just raw ability to play and game knowledge

    Man if I had the money for it, I would totally join the midlane academy lol, these videos are absolutely phenomenal and always show up right when I need them. I've been struggling with ranked anxiety for a few months now, and even at this moment i've only played one game today because I'm absolutely terrified to lose, even though I learn more from those losses. I'm excited to try to break my mental blocks and maybe get to diamond this season, only 270 lp and some promos to go lol.

    In BR league serve I noticed that most players are exactly how you described, myself included. And when I started to change those things in myself I immediately saw that almost no one are trying to change themselves. So I'm taking a step back from league, and just like you I gonna try to make others players chante these terrible mindset.

    The problem is lots of people overfocus on their bad teammates and/or their own mistakes making league as an overall negative experience for them. I think they should learn the ability of:
    1) Being more easy-going with the mistakes you make accepting them; learning to have fun in a high pressured game.
    2) Feeling motivated each game in order to slowly climb.
    3) You can have habits, but understanding that each game is situational. (You can play more agressive if their jungler is a shyvana but not if it's a shaco, for example). Versatility. (Based on In-game experience and different strategies for optimization.)
    Personally, before a ranked, I watch one of the most legendary audiovisual scenes that would boost my confidence up into thinking I'm actually great, I'm insane, I'm "built different" (xD) ; so this translates me into playing the ranked with more confidence and more in control. Internally I know I'm not but you have to be thinking that way during in game... I think it helps (since It helps me to feel motivated for better results).
    It's not an arrogant approach if you can stay humble realising your own mistakes (while having fun); trying to understand the losses. It's important to spot what behaviours of you are holding you down. If you don't have enough game knowledge to realise which behaviours, then is when you need a good Coach like Curtis that would guide you.
    But careful because not everyone has the same knowledge when coaching.

    that zed one is so common it's hilarious. I've lost count of the sheer amount of lanes that get handed to me by mage players who just refuse to learn how to play into zed and then fling a barrage of insults at me for playing a "Broken no skill overpowered champ". Just stumbled upon this great video.

    Hello Coach Curtis, I don't usually comment on videos but your videos are so informative. I feel and I know that I am improving!
    It would be really nice though if you could tell (in the description box or something) for what rank the main information of your video is the most useful. I know that in general all the advice are applicable to all elos. But many of them are so dense of information and there are so many videos that we get pretty lost. Micro game play for example doesn't really matter in bronze or silver and it'll help if those advice were a little bit more sorted

    There is one thing I'd like to tack on, almost as a "I disagree slightly" to one of your points. Specifically, when people get sympathy from others for how their game goes and "they were gonna lose no matter what." I think that as long as someone agrees and even looks for ways in which they could have done better during a game, it's still a healthy mindset to look back at a game and go, "Okay, my botlane went 0/10 by 15 minutes, yeah the game was hard. Did I do everything I could to try and win?" Because to me, there's nothing inherently wrong with pointing out things that make the game hard for you. But, as you said, Coach, it's using that as the sole excuse as to why you lost and why there was no chance to win. There is always something you can do to improve your chances at winning a game, even if you don't think there was.
