The Legend Returns (1994) was actually the best one.

First computer game I ever played. The original Lode Runner on Apple IIe back in 1983.
It used 6 keys on the keyboard to go backwards and forwards L and K, up and down I and M, and dig left and dig right H and L.

The first one on the C64 is my favourit one. The smoothness of the motion was incredible.
I never realized there were so many versions. I only played the original on my Commodore 64.

Never knew this was a series
The console versions that scroll the screen make the game more difficult than it should be. Having played through all the original levels on the C64, I can't imagine being able to beat many of the higher levels if you can't see where all the enemies are.

There was a version of Lode Runner that ran on the black and white Macs (such as the MacPlus and MacSE) in the mid-1980s. I'm sure it ran on the color ones (Mac II, etc) as well, but you didn't color or the faster Mac to play it.
