I hope Dough sees your comment, I really think it's the one with the clearest description of the three amigos 👌🏻 Certainly Adrian's solos are pure melody and feeling. And, I mean, I love all of them, but he's my favourite guitar player!
Struggling with this myself. Solo 1 is Very sloppy for Dave, sounds more like something Janick would come out with. But also solo 3 sounds like Jan too. Daveys tone us usually unmistakeable like in the lead melody at 9:54, but the solo is a confusing one. If solo 1 IS him, he's even used the whammy like Janick. Weird

I've been a Maiden fan for 4 decades, and I love their earlier metal sound, but I also love prog. This is a slight move to blend the two, and I applaud their transition to more complex layered music to complement their always complex lyrics. Up the Irons. Keep 'em coming Doug.
Doug - about the guitarists and their individual sounds: Adrian Smith tends to build his solos from very structured patterns & licks put together with well-defined phrasing. His solos are performed almost always through his bridge pickup, giving them a distinctly thinner yet more harmonic sound that cuts through the mix without a level boost. His solos are always meticulously planned, so the Adrian solo you hear on the album will be the same Adrian solo you hear live. He comes up with the best riffs, too, which usually have the most rocking feel to them. Dave Murray’s solos are usually have a very flowing, legato feel to them punctuated by long ascending & descending runs of trills & bends. He performs most of his solos through the neck-position pickup, giving them a fuller, robust voice. When he really attacks his solos, they really command your attention. He is the most spontaneous of the three - when you see them live, you will hear key features of the solos he put down on vinyl, surrounded by nicely-fit bits of what he’s feeling at the moment. Janick’s solos tend to ride right between Adrian & Dave’s in terms of structure & sound, although Janick tends to include more rapid-fire staccato-picked scales in his solos than either Adrian or Dave. When you hear a guitar mirroring & filling out Bruce’s vocal melody line, it is Janick. Like Dave, Janick is very spontaneous live - you might hear a completely different solo from him on stage vs album, key highlights noteithstanding. Hope this helps!
Best song from one hell of an album. The lead guitar at the end gives me goosebumps every time, it's so full of emotions and reflects the lyrics perfectly. I just LOVE how Steves song writing evolved over the years and how he is not afraid to unleash it, 100% pure Maiden. God, how I love this band....

@@markparkin5372 yeah it might be one of his strongest Performances ever. Imo Senjutsu is their best Album since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and that came out back in 1988
9:15 Janick starts with whammy vibrato (slightly less smooth, narrower tone than Dave), then 9:22 it's Dave's sound, brighter and mellow. He also uses a lot the whammy bar going down, while he does pull-off and hammer-on (start at 9:23), then his famous legato, combining the same legato pattern in various tonalities; very fast and fluid, with creamy and glassy sound (neck pickup almost always, i think). Then, it's Adrian's turn, 9:37. He has a distinct and sharp tone, in his solos he uses a lot an alternation of quiet bits and more wild ones, fluidly. Very melodic, with characteristic vibrato at the end (he uses both fingers and whammy bar, I think here he uses the whammy bar to do it). His tone is always on point, sharp but full of medium range. (In Italian, I'll say "più pieno", fuller). 11:50, Janick starts with his classic tone, a bit more compressed and darker than the others. He often breaks his solos with frequent bendings. Usually he shreds a lot, (with Adrian, he uses more staccato) but at slower paces, he can be very melodic and he methodically spreads his bendings in sweet spots. Usually is Dave who does fills and licks, he has a sweeter sound. Then sometimes Adrian or Janick, or both, harmonize Dave's melodic phrases. I'm sorry for my English, I hope I've explained well.
2:50 Not even a minute into the actual song reaction and his piano skills along with the Maiden song is epic.. I don't just tune in to watch your reaction i tune it to witness play along keyboard awesomeness!
The album has the vibe of: there is much evil in the world, mortals are overcome by the systems they create, their greed and finally hopefully we can be purified and be reunited in some kind of afterlife.
The way I identify the guitar players. Might not be totally accurate, but this is how I perceive them: Davey - full sound. Like bubbles. It’s super fast and precise. Run to the hills is his solo. Adrian - has more of a twang to his sound. And the notes are very precisely picked. Nothing is aggressive, or particularly fast; everything seems to float. The wicker man Janick- the sound is more like a pan flutey type. Very fast, but a bit muddy. The muddier sólo in fear of the dark. Again, this is how I hear it. So it’s probably not as helpful. Also, I love all of their styles, so any words I picked that might be misinterpreted, don’t. I really love this band and these three guys are my heroes.
I'm a long-time Maiden fan and Davey's sound has always been my favorite. It's been called "legato style" but I just love that velvety tone and how the notes flow together.
Dave is very fast and seems to follow the song structure closer with his solos. Adrian is my favorite & I tend to identify his solos as slower & maybe a bit loose, almost like he is just about to lose control and play just a bit too late. See 2nd solo in 2 Minutes to midnight or 2nd solo in The Wring on the Wall. Janick is very wild and spontaneous. I almost think Jimi Hendrix vibe.
Dave and Adrian both use a legato style and they often mirror their solos. I suggest you look up Lick Of Beasts' channel. They both have their sound and style and it is very easy to know who is playing. Janick on the other uses a staccato style and picks every single note. It is very obvious if you listen to Aces High opening. His sound and tone is also very different. Fun fact: Janick is left-handed but learned to play right handed.
Quite a few people with much more vocabulary to describe what I tried to. Thanks a lot guys! Hopefully Doug will be able to tell them apart in the next editions.
Dave: legato, soping wet chorus Adrian: blusie, notes falling over each other.... Almost think he's gonna fall behind but then he's rt there rt on top Jan: balls to the wall.... As fast as I can go
Time Machine, Darkest Hour, Death of the Celts and The Parchment are all incredible, w/ interesting time changes etc. The whole album is amazing.. hard to pick just one song...

Finally! The reaction that I wanted from this album! An absolutely stellar masterpiece. Honestly, it’s one of my favourite Maiden songs of all time, and I don’t know how that’s even possible. Even songs I liked but didn’t love eventually grow on me, but I loved this one the very first time. It’s so dynamic and passionate, you’ve got the newer sound of the band, but you’ve still got the old-school gallop. I love these long songs that Maiden writes. It’s a complete journey listening to them. Songs like this are as epic as their entire career. You gotta do The Parchment next! I can’t wait to be in an arena singing along with the entire crowd in this one!
Doug I was very pleased to see you review this song. It is in my humble opinion the best song on the album and my personal favorite. Splendid work as always!
The solos are like this: Solo 1 - DAVE / Solo 2 - ADRIAN / Solo 3 - JANICK And as a general rule: Adrian is the bluesy one, he tends to bend a lot. Dave plays fast and very tight and uses legato a lot. Janick plays also fast, but he is more aggressive and uses the whammy a lot
Another outstanding Maiden reaction from Doug. At first I wasn't too bothered about this song, i had given it a cursory listen but I hadn't really given it my attention. It wasn't until I heard Bruce barking out 'LOVE IN ANGER' that I sat up and took notice; I was a convert. This album, like Book of Souls, has some spectacular tracks and I have to say that my top three so far are Senjutsu, Hell on Earth and Darkest Hour. I can't wait to see what the boys do next!
Great analysis, Doug! I would rate the songs of Senjutsu as follows: Senjutsu 7/10 Stratego 9/10 Writing On The Wall 7/10 Lost In A Lost World 9/10 Days Of Future Past 7/10 The Time Machine 8/10 Darkest Hour 10/10 Death Of The Celts 9/10 The Parchment 9/10 Hell On Earth 9/10
Senjutsu 9/10 Stratego 7/10 Writing in the wall 8/10 Lost in a lost world 8/10 Days of future past 9/10 Time machine 7/10 Darkest hour 10/10 Death of the celts 7/10 The parchment 9/10 Hell on Earth 10/10
Guitar solos-Dave first being more legato, and then almost certainly Adrian second, following the melody. Adrian plays very melodic solos. Janick is third one later. Typically they follow that order. All three are capable of great melodic playing!
Adrian def the clean/melodic solos, jannick a tad noodly for my taste, dave tends towards slightly harsher tones... all are terric together. Jannicks writing has added a good deal, must b said
It doesn’t surprise me that this song flew to the top of the poll for your reaction video, even the Iron Maiden Facebook page shared the video today and captioned it something like “you guys really seem to like this one don’t you”. It’s a phenomenal masterpiece! As for the guitar players and solos, they’re played in the following order: Dave Murray and Adrian Smith (middle solo section), Janick Gers (solo during breakdown at end). The defining characteristics I’d say are: Dave Murray - Neck pickup warm sounding tone, a lot of fast legato licks, very fluid playing. Adrian Smith - Usually bridge pickup for a sharper tone, alternative picked scales, bluesy sounding licks to his solos, can be a bit experimental to bring new material to the band but nothing too crazy. Can definitely hear how he brings new things to the band if you listen to each album in order. Janice Gers - Shredder, power player, repetitive licks (you can easily pick them out once you’ve heard them) goes for speed. He gets a lot of bad rep for his solo style as he’s said in interviews before “you can never play the same thing twice so you may as well improvise it live” which is a shame as a lot of his studio solos are really good, but he has butchered them in the past. His solos on Senjitsu have impressed me though! Hope this helps.
Smith used often Tapping and his Trem in creative Ways, on of his Signature-Moves is this Angus-Young-bend-to-the- octave-ad-the-small-third-but-in-fast-lick. Murray do more Improvisation and in this tasty Dive-Bombs. Gers is more into folkish-Stuff. The Red and the Black was very fascinating Live, because it was a massive show-up of their guitar-skills.
Doug, I hope you react to The Parchment from the new album. It is an outstanding and hypnotic song with some Egyptian vibes on it. Great job with Hell on Earth
I love you enjoyed lyrics . Another song you should check that has strong lyrics and is reflection of current times is song When the wild wind blows. Much love for the reaction
Nicko with the galloping drumming really adds so much the style of this song. The entirety of this song is a masterpiece. Intro, lyrics, drumming, solos, ending. I really hope they end their concert with this one.
Can't believe you focused on the stabs during Adrian's Beautiful lead break. It's the most stunning use of timing and musicality. One of the best lead breaks on the album.

@@tonyrestaino7593 The first song I heard from Maiden was Can I play with Madness and I fell so in love with that song that I must have listen to it on rotation for days and this is the first song since I have been 13 to make me feel that way again.
When it somes to solos, all 3 guitarists have very different style and sound. Dave has probably most fluent, bluesy and round sound with a lot of vibrato, Adrian has usually more sharp, agressive sound with a lot more single notes flying around and Janick is very trashy, dynamic and "dirty" in sound - with a big tendency to improvise on stage which sometimes works great, and sometimes not so much :) After some time you can easily recognize who is playing where as they are quite loyal to how they sound over the years.

This album is a grower, but this my favorite song on it by an enormous margin. Different people have different opinions, but of the 4 longer Steve Harris songs, this is the one that works best for me. To repeat what Up_In_The_Air said, you can learn to recognize the soloists by their style. Janick tends to have a raw, dirty sound and his solos feature hundreds of notes clumped into a tiny space. Dave's guitar usually has a cleaner "spacey" sound, and his solos feature a lot of fast and clean legato runs with a bluesy feel. Adrian also has a bluesy feel, but he tends to be more of a "storyteller," and his solos are emotional, with a lot of single notes, bends, and slides punctuated with bursts of rapid notes. I'd say Adrian is my favorite, as he usually seems to be saying something significant.
As a long-time Maiden fan, this song just hit me the first time I heard it. If Maiden can churn out a couple of top tier songs every few years, I'll be happy. Album as a whole is a 7/10, but Senjutsu, Days Of Future Past, Stratego, and Hell On Earth are instant classics. First solo: Dave Second solo: Adrian (all the melody stuff is 100% his style, especially with the pedal notes) -bridge- Third solo: Janick Post-solo melody: Dave
Post solo melody is made by Adrian Smith. The solo has a harmonic note that Adrian usually plays and this helped to identify that he was the one who played this part.
Iam a Long time fan of Steve Harris, his bass playing specially in the 80s albums, but i feel that sometimes we underrated his ability als composer. Taking in mind his limited know how of musical theory and Harmony, he writes songs that are masterpieces, both musically and lyricaly.
I don't think anyone has ever underrated Steve Harris as a composer lol. He has singlehandedly composed Phantom of the Opera, Killers, Hallowed be thy Name, Where Eagles Dare, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Alexander the Great, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Mother Russia, Fear of the Dark, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Sign of the Cross, The Clansman, For the greater good of God, When the Wild Wind Blows, The Red and the Black, Death of the Celts, The Parchment and Hell on Earth. How can one that composes all these incredible pieces be underrated ?
@@divinitygaming8673 i think that People like Doug, that have a lot of knowledgnment of harmony don't apreciate what someone like Steve made, because his use of the same chord cadences in much of his work. Solos of the amigos: Dave Murry plays a lot of hammer-ons and he can noodle around a bit but really well. Adrian Smith is the most organized and tasty. If it's a solo that sounds like someone put time and thought into it, that's Adrian. He does zero noodling. Janick Gers exclusively noodles. He's unpredictable and sounds a bit drunk with his solos at times. All three amigos are great guitarists but for my money Adrian is tops!! Good one Doug! 11:50 probably Janick Gers's solo (plays staccato, very "dry" guitar tone)
I could be wrong about solo 1 and 3, but I'm certain of Adrian's one.
You're very precise. I can testify
Well done - pretty sure you nailed it!
Weird
@@maiden06660 the solos are in the order: Dave, Adrian and janick. This is certain

40 years plus later and they're writing songs like that!!.....i just have the upmost respect for Iron Maiden..... how many classic, epic, and legendary songs have made?? Just one after another.....One of the greatest bands for me.

Heading for afterlife, meet me there 🤘🏻Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
I've been a Maiden fan for 4 decades, and I love their earlier metal sound, but I also love prog. This is a slight move to blend the two, and I applaud their transition to more complex layered music to complement their always complex lyrics. Up the Irons. Keep 'em coming Doug.

You rock dude. Hell on earth meant the world to me
Losing my mum that was my hell on earth. Music is one ❤
Doug - about the guitarists and their individual sounds:
Adrian Smith tends to build his solos from very structured patterns & licks put together with well-defined phrasing.
I was gonna comment. You said what I was feeling.
You realize what an amazing melody wizard Steve Harris is when you watch people perform solo piano versions of his Maiden compositions.

The Parchment is a masterpiece as well mate. up the irons. PS personal question to your Doug... would you go and see Maiden on the new World Tour?

Everything is a masterpiece for fanboys like you. The Parchment is one of the most boring songs on the album.
@@spyro2386 please don't tell anyone, I'm a huge Maiden fan, saw them 12 times live, but this album is just an average to me. I can't understand the hype. It's far the weakest effort since the reunion, TBOS is their best since then, that's among their top5 for me.

Nickos drumming on the whole album is amazing not talked about enough in my opinion but I can't wait to see this live
I agree with you there mate. Definitely been his strongest album for a while
@@markparkin5372 yeah it might be one of his strongest Performances ever. Imo Senjutsu is their best Album since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and that came out back in 1988
I'm not the biggest fan of Nicko, but man he kills it in this track.
UP THE IRONS!!! Great album all the way through.
2:50 Not even a minute into the actual song reaction and his piano skills along with the Maiden song is epic.. I don't just tune in to watch your reaction i tune it to witness play along keyboard awesomeness!
This song does feel like a final statement. It’s a rare cathartic song.
Yep... On the other hand we all thought The Final Frontier was going to be their last album when it came out so... Who knows?
The album has the vibe of: there is much evil in the world, mortals are overcome by the systems they create, their greed and finally hopefully we can be purified and be reunited in some kind of afterlife.
Now I need Doug's full Hell on Earth Piano cover!
The way I identify the guitar players.
Might not be totally accurate, but this is how I perceive them:
Davey - full sound. Like bubbles. It’s super fast and precise. Run to the hills is his solo.
Adrian - has more of a twang to his sound. And the notes are very precisely picked. Nothing is aggressive, or particularly fast; everything seems to float. The wicker man
Janick- the sound is more like a pan flutey type.
Dave: legato, soping wet chorus
Adrian: blusie, notes falling over each other.... Almost think he's gonna fall behind but then he's rt there rt on top
Jan: balls to the wall.... As fast as I can go
Time Machine, Darkest Hour, Death of the Celts and The Parchment are all incredible, w/ interesting time changes etc. The whole album is amazing.. hard to pick just one song...

Only thing I don't like is all of the synth. Too much on my opinion.
This whole album was written and produced in 2019. This song is almost like they predicted the corona pandemic before it even happened.
I wish they had waited to write and record this album during the pandemic, at least then it might've had a sense of urgency and social relevance instead of the bloated metal-by-numbers they've pumped out instead.

I agree…..I’ve been an instant fan of maiden since ‘82 (I was 10) and this song just hit me like a freight train ……amazing piece of work 🤘
An amazing reaction as usual. Im sure you would enjoy The Parchment just as much if not more! Thank you for great content. All the best from Sweden!
Doug I was very pleased to see you review this song. It is in my humble opinion the best song on the album and my personal favorite. Splendid work as always!
Everyday since the album was released I have been waiting for this review. Glad it finally came.
The solos are like this:
Solo 1 - DAVE / Solo 2 - ADRIAN / Solo 3 - JANICK
And as a general rule: Adrian is the bluesy one, he tends to bend a lot. Dave plays fast and very tight and uses legato a lot. Janick plays also fast, but he is more aggressive and uses the whammy a lot
dave is the best guitar player.....adrian is the best musician.....janick is the best dancer.
Adrian Smith's solos will always be f...g perfect... as always
That last part really has an ending vibe to it, if this was their last tune it definitely sounds like the right note to end on.
Awesome reaction :)
The Parchment would also be nice, its another epic with deep lyrics and theme
Another outstanding Maiden reaction from Doug.
At first I wasn't too bothered about this song, i had given it a cursory listen but I hadn't really given it my attention. It wasn't until I heard Bruce barking out 'LOVE IN ANGER' that I sat up and took notice; I was a convert. This album, like Book of Souls, has some spectacular tracks and I have to say that my top three so far are Senjutsu, Hell on Earth and Darkest Hour.
I can't wait to see what the boys do next!
I love this song, its impact is epic. Thanks for pulling out so much more meaning from it
Great analysis, Doug!
I would rate the songs of Senjutsu as follows:
Senjutsu 7/10
Stratego 9/10
Writing On The Wall 7/10
Lost In A Lost World 9/10
Days Of Future Past 7/10
The Time Machine 8/10
Darkest Hour 10/10
Death Of The Celts 9/10
The Parchment 9/10
Hell On Earth 9/10
Senjutsu 9/10
Stratego 7/10
Writing in the wall 8/10
Lost in a lost world 8/10
Days of future past 9/10
Time machine 7/10
Darkest hour 10/10
Death of the celts 7/10
The parchment 9/10
Hell on Earth 10/10
Guitar solos-Dave first being more legato, and then almost certainly Adrian second, following the melody. Adrian plays very melodic solos. Janick is third one later. Typically they follow that order. All three are capable of great melodic playing!
Adrian def the clean/melodic solos, jannick a tad noodly for my taste, dave tends towards slightly harsher tones... all are terric together. Jannicks writing has added a good deal, must b said
It's an absolute honour and privilege to be a fan of this band. 💙
This! Greatest band ever.
You made me cry. I can't tell you how much I agree.
The defining characteristics I’d say are:
Dave Murray - Neck pickup warm sounding tone, a lot of fast legato licks, very fluid playing.
If you go back and listen to When the Wild Blows you hear a lot of similarities.
Doug, I hope you react to The Parchment from the new album. It is an outstanding and hypnotic song with some Egyptian vibes on it. Great job with Hell on Earth

@@twestist Been listening to Maiden since the first album. Holy shit I'm old. Lol
I always had the impression that Smith has more Blues influences than Murray.
What distinguishes Dave from Adrian, to me, it's the usage of the Legato technique, which Dave loves. Both have strong blues influences.

Death of the Celts and Darkest Hour from the same album have some of the best leads and solo-ing I’ve heard in ages
I’ve said it on the fc forum that Adrian’s solo on The Darkest Hour is the best I’ve heard in a long time. Hell on Earth is my favorite.
Simply a great dissection of a Epic song. I actually listened to it for the first time with your vid!! I have the album, but haven't listened to the 2nd disc yet. Wow, what a great song, very complex. You have a new sub! Thanks Cheers and Up the Irons! Maiden follower since 1982!!!
Well described
@@camerongardner4538 Thanks!

First solo: Dave
Second solo: Adrian (all the melody stuff is 100% his style, especially with the pedal notes)
-bridge-
Third solo: Janick
Post-solo melody: Dave
Agreed
Post solo melody is made by Adrian Smith.
The solo has a harmonic note that Adrian usually plays and this helped to identify that he was the one who played this part.
7? My opinion,11.
Iam a Long time fan of Steve Harris, his bass playing specially in the 80s albums, but i feel that sometimes we underrated his ability als composer. Taking in mind his limited know how of musical theory and Harmony, he writes songs that are masterpieces, both musically and lyricaly.
Working Class Hero. 🖤
He’s just a natural musical genius. No training, just writes amazing music.
Steve Harris should get the Nobel prize in literarure for all the great lyrics he's written.

I really appreciate your take on Maiden's songwriting. It's like reading great philosophy. They capture the human dilemma exquisitely. Now more than ever!
My favorite tune on the album and I thought if that was the last for them it is really fitting, like you mentioned.
