just trying to imagine this without the road. must have been incredible to do this journey on horseback 100 years ago.

Imagine how the roads were made. They had to dynamite their way through rough terrain.

I will take the slow paced rural life anytime.....as long as you have a food store and internet.....that's all I need.

Went to Rapid City in 1997. It was early August when we took our then new born and 4 year old with us. It was the longest stretch of highway I'd ever seen. There were no gas stations for miles and no signs of human life. Occasionally, we'd pass by a town so small its population was 10, per population signs. Once we reached Rapid City, it was busy with folks. We were tired and hungry, and it was late. We luckily found an open restaurant, and a hotel close by. The town is set up rather oddly, but it was easy to find our way around it. We saw the sights the next day. I'd never spent so much time in a vehicle in my entire life. We had to travel back to Kansas on a one week vacation to Colorado, Wyoming, and S. Dakota. The landscapes were beautiful. The mountains were higher than I'd ever known them to be. Ski resorts shut down for the summer. The air was pure, and sky's were the bluest I'd ever seen. The days were in the 70s, at night much colder. We witnessed a hail of large rock falling on our way into Jackson hole Wyoming. One car had been hit, but nobody was hurt. The ppl were friendly, and the restaurants menues had things on them I'd never seen before, like Elk, and deer, and even Bear. I ordered off a child's menu for a beef steak and grilled sweet potato..the steak was much bigger than I had expected for a child's menu. I'll never forget that trip.

What a great video and great music! Not even a word spoken and not needed. I love that stretch of highway from Mule Creek Junction to Lusk, WY. The Sea of Grass is quite a sight. It is a vast expanse. You captured it very well.

My mom grew up west of the Mule Creek Junction on a ranch. Boarded in town in Lusk for high school . I was born in Torrington , my paternal grandparents had a u pump it gas station there.
    Was home in June.
Yiu should have seen Lusk and Torrington of my childhood or even the late 60s and early 70s. They are so run down now
But still so much my heart is there.
Cheyenne the best place to stay is Little America. Amazing rooms and service!

I enjoyed "riding along." I currently live on the East Coast in a congested area with bumper-to-bumper traffic. How I long to just drive through wide-open spaces and not much traffic. Your journey from Rapid City to Cheyenne gave me the escape I needed, even if it was just virtual. Thanks!

That was a wonderful nostalgia trip for me, thank you so much for this video. I've driven this route several times, back in the day. Skirting around Wyoming's desolate Thunder Basin is an amazing trip through an old American wilderness. The road less traveled, indeed.

YES the best scenic route to Cheyenne. Traveled dozens of times between Hot Springs and Cheyenne to do quarterly shopping trips. 😊 Easy road trip without the boredom and traffic of US 385 to I-80 West. Glad y'all took the time to explore some of our Black Hills neighborhood and surrounding tri-state region. 😊

1942, I was two years old, my brother was a newborn, and my parents packed up from Mason City, Iowa, and moved to Aberdeen, Washington. No freeways, probably not many amenities along the road, and my baby brother was tucked up in the back window of the coop. I seem to remember them saying that my brother was only about three months old which would mean they were driving in the middle of the winter. I wish I had more details of the trip because it must’ve been horrendous.

Looks a lot like 385, 20, and 71 across Nebraska, once out of Edgemont.
Out of Hot Springs, one can take 71 all the way to Colorado 14, and into Fort Collins without using any interstate, and there's some stuff to see doing that trip as well.

Been following you for, I don't know, maybe 6 months or so(?), but I'm caught up with your current videos, so I've been watching some of your old ones while I wait for updates. I just want to say, I love the music you use for these older driving only videos. Most of the ones I've seen like this have been in the Great Plains or Rocky Mountains, and I feel like it goes perfectly with the scenery out in that part of the country.
If you're ever in the area (or maybe it's there and I need to find it), I would love to see one of these driving videos from US 550 between Durango and Montrose, Colorado (aka, the Million Dollar Highway). Keep up the great work!

Haven’t driven that route but been to RC 3X. Our camp was in Keystone near Mt Rushmore. Spent 2 summers there at that camp. Had to cross the RR tracks of 1880s train which was featured in Gunsmoke segment “Snow Train.” It was June & I built a fire in the fireplace of our cabin. Up the mountain was very cold & windy.
Been to Rushmore before they put up all the walkways & rails. Beautiful country.
My friend was in Gurnsey or Torrington which is near Lusk. We went to pick him up. His room was so small you could sit on the toilet, brush your teeth & take a bath all at the same time.
So love the wes: SD, WY & MT. Colorado didn’t do much for me except the switchbacks. Have you driven any switchbacks?

8:09 I KNEW that little junction at Hawk Springs looked familiar Sure enough, I rewound and found it on Google Maps and it's the little place they fixed up on Restaurant Impossible with Robert Irvine. It's lookin' good! Can't wait until you tour Cheyenne because I lived there from 2001-2003 and loved it. I had a truck that wasn't working great then so I didn't get to explore like I'd have wanted so I'm glad to take the ride with you from Rapid! Thanks for all you do!

I got pulled over by the police driving through Torrington. I was trying to go from St. Louis all the way to Casper, WY in one day. I remember the policeman said "if you drive that way through some of these small towns in Wyoming you're asking for trouble. He wrote out only a warning though. He was right--I wasn't watching the speed as I drove into the town. That was at least 20 years ago.
