  • Mat Irvine began working for the BBC's Visual FX's Department in the early 1970's and during his career worked on such iconic TV programmes as Blakes 7, Edge of Darkness, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who (he still shares his workshop with "robo-dog" K9).
In this interview, Mat discusses the origins of model making, it's place in the history of film and TV, the materials and techniques involved, his own involvement in the field of model making and visual effects, and how the field will develop in the future.

Hi Mat, great video. I had a chat with Allen Uri of Fantastic Plastic. He makes some cool stuff (I built his Tremulis rocket). He defends resin as "a type of plastic".😆. This was a great history video. I hope to chat more in the future. I remember Silent Running. Filmed in a retired aircraft carrier. Be well and model on...Max. BTW, I am going o promote this video on my channel.

This is terrific. a great insights into the model kit hobby past and present, as well as Mat Irvine himself - a familiar name to anyone interested in sci-fi and/or visual effects growing up in the UK of the fabulous 1970s. I remember the 'swap shop' bits and the models of the various NASA spacecraft sitting on the table in front of Sir Patrick Moore, James Burke and others discussing the Apollo and Skylab missions.

Wonderful! I'm a long-march fan (the Anderson's FIREBALL XL-5 hooked me), living in Southern California.
CGI is incredible, but I so admire people who do what you do. Even today, they still use practical models and effects, and I believe it'll always be the case.
You're covering some older, yet sadly overlooked pieces here that inspired me and some creative friends to play around with a couple of 8mm and Super 8 camera. Silent Running was a huge influence. IDK if you would know about proto-fanboy Forrest Ackerman, whose collection waz legendary. His collection included items from the silent era. Search the word "Ackermansion" for some fun. Even Trek and Who in their most primitive still delight me.
Again, wonderful insights here. A most sincere thank you, sir!

Hi Mat - good to see that you’re still ‘at it’! (As indeed am I ….) Very interesting.
