CC, my concern about her story is when she said that her child was "disqualified" for a program because he was on medication? That doesn't sound right at all, first of all HIPAA would protect that info, second, there is no way a school/program would be allowed to do that, it would be straight-up discrimination. As a mom, I would have fought that rule instead of taking my child off medication to comply with it, right?!

I cannot believe that she casually said that her church refused to have medicated kids sing because they wanted personality. And that she wasn’t furious or anything.

That made me mad. If 'personality' or stage persona is something needed to move up you work on it with the child, medications and medical conditions do not come into it. @@madisencrapo7543 it very much depends on what kinds of fats. Tuna fish is a very fatty fish, but it's a different kind of fat than bacon, and contains properties like Omega-3 fatty acids that are actually very good for your brain. YES! I'm so glad you brought this up! Any kind of major diet change requires a major financial sacrifice for so many individuals and families! But things like actual medical and mental health treatment and services are subsidized by the government through programs like medicaid, etc. So, sometimes the only choice for help parents/guardians have is medication and their local mental health authority (if they even have one close to where they live!). These generalizations are so harmful, and that message is being perpetuated through the kiddos that are absorbing all of this from the adults in their lives. Not to mention the Moms on this call who may have immediately felt shame for the fact that all they are able to afford right now is what their limited budget will cover. Ok, rant over. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 😉😏

@@themoodytherapist Also when it comes to those treatments, they're only given if you're approved and if there's somebody in your area who is even in the medicaid network To help your kids and yourself when it comes to specialists. I was on medicaid pretty much my entire life growing up and my kids are now on medicaid.. It's still something that you have to have 100% absolute need for And they can deny you something that even your doctor wants you to take. My mom was type 2 diabetic, had hypothyroidism, and had a heart problem. She died 9 and a 1/2 years ago and I fully believe that a huge chunk of the reason was because medicaid refused to cover the amount of medication that her doctor prescribed. She was forced to make a 30 day supply stretch for 90 days because insurance governed by the state felt like she did not actually need the amount the doctor wanted her to have So they refused to cover things like 90 test strips so that way she could test her blood sugar 3 times A-day, her medication for her thyroid that she was supposed to take twice A-day and they said that she should make it last at least 60 days.No matter what she did and what her doctor did to fight the insurance company they refused to acknowledge her actual needs and it's and ultimately, in my opinion, led to her passing away years too early.

I have ADHD, I was diagnosed in 1992, when people were barely acknowledging that ADHD is a thing, let alone that we can/do need assistance with managing it. I tested high on every single scale the doctors had, and was prescribed Dexedrine. It's an amphetamine. It is not something you can give a 9yo and have them calm down, go to sleep, and focus unless they have actually different brain chemistry. STILL people pretended I was faking it, despite my grades and behaviour doing a complete 180 in 4th grade to the point where people thought I was a different kid. I wasn't stupid, I never was, I just couldn't function the way the others did to do the same work in the same time. But my point is, if your kid needs so much help and medication as to need literal "legal speed" to manage their ADHD.... how the hell is oil going to help? I'm so grateful my parents understand science, brain chemistry, and nurodivergence and didn't push this shit on me.

People with adhd can focus and attention on things they are interested in very well. It’s not a conscious decision their brain make even though it may look like it to others. Their brain literally just engages with things they find interesting and does not engage with things they don’t. That’s probably why her child did so well with music. This happens to some people with adhd who are successful. They found that interest which was able to compensate for the complete lack of self regulation/executive functions.

I'm 100% sure my anxiety and depression would be so much easier and my life would not have been impacted by them as much if I had medication as a child. I'm on my first week of medication and honestly, the SILENCE of my brain after taking the meds, shocked me. I never ever realised things could be.. this simple and easy. I'm no longer just surviving and struggling everyday, fearing for failure and reprimands. My parents were apprehensive of the meds at first but trusted me to do what I see best. The story about the mom being told that her son couldn't perform as a singer if he was on ADHD meds is the weirdest thing I've ever heard. I was never in a fancy kis' choir, but I have been performing since I was ten and I've NEVER heard of such a thing. Yes, personality helps a performance, but I'm sure coaching could help him show it as a performer just as well. Plenty of kids without any diagnoses need the same kind of coaching to advance in their performance. I agree, it's totally fear mongering.

She didn't get upset when her son was turned away from the choir, (like most moms would), because the story was either fabricated, or greatly exaggerated.
A former MLMer told me that targeting moms of children is where the money is ... and to use your child's made-up story to create a bond of trust and empathy which will boost sales. She also stated that many women do not possess important knowledge concerning some of the dangers of essential oils,.

I actually dealt with a patients daughter who believed that these things cure alz and stroke. I had to call the head nurse once because a daughter was abusing her father, pushing him farther than he had the ability after being permanently disabled from a stroke. She was forcing him to stand and walk. Things like this can kill someone by an accident, especially if they're elderly, a single fall or fracture can cause a decline in some folk (depending on conditions) leading to death. They would risk death by painful fall of their father, than to do the healing thing and to accept that he is disabled but still alive and here.

If they are talking about adhd then all the dietary changes, skills training, forms of discipline are USELESS for that child. It’s a neurodevelopmental disorder. Unless you change/help how their brain works nothing else is going to help. ADHD and it’s severity has nothing to do with how a child is raised or disciplined.

As someone with ADHD, skills training was actually really helpful for me! I didn't really have innate organization skills like some neurotypical people do, but once I was taught methods for organization like color-coding and having a designated place for certain things, and scheduling/time-management, my life improved significantly! I think those things paired with medication lead to the best outcomes of course, but there are some non-pharmaceutical methods that can help decrease the amount of executive dysfunction that comes with ADHD :) !

    • @CainXVII

There is absolutely skills training that can help. Of course, meds are great, but not everyone can take meds. Sometimes they interfere with other medications or you get bad side effects. Training the skills you are bad at is always a thing, learning strategies; sometimes it's the only thing you can do. I have both an autism diagnosis and an adhd diagnosis and my mom taught me a whole lot about how I should act that didn't come naturally to me even before I got diagnosed. Just things like how to think about time or strategies for making the grocery trip easier. Or just figuring out I would do French if rewarded. Now I was an only child so my parents had the time to do that with me. But I think that helped me a whole lot.

And my same-aged cousin was ADD and medicated and zombie-like, and they didn't want to kill my spirit like that.

I have ADHD and both my children have inherented it as well. I waited until my son was 14 till we even considered medicine. There were so many things to try before meds, especially young kids. One thing is finding what works for the kid. Like for myself and my son, we doodle while listening to someone (keeping hands busy makes us actively listen). Though medication works very well for me, I am also an advocate of getting kids to have to constantly conform to a nuero-typical world, especially when we can accommodate little things to help people work at their best ability.

I’m just rolling my eyes that she quoted the Harvard Study. Its from 2012 and intended to identify questions in an understudied area. It has been clarified multiple times by further study (because that’s how science works!) 25 of the 27 analyzed studies were conducted in China where water is naturally higher in fluoride AND at that time, the government added higher amounts of fluoride to the water than the US typically did/does. Harvard School of Public Health has come out in favor of floridation of the US water multiple times.
Such a good example of how interesting results that raise good questions get freaking twisted (by both traditional media and the consumer) good rule of thumb? 1) read the original journal article when possible. When its not, at least read the abstract (always free) scientiests tend to be much more realistic/conservative about the impact and application of their work than journalists 2) if its science and more than 3-5 years old, its not relevant unless its background only!

These women made my skin crawl! I am so glad you covered this Chelsea.
As a Mom with a young child who has adhd, I can tell you that medication is a blessing. My child now thrives in school and is able to function better during daily activities. There is NOTHING wrong with a child needing medication. I struggled with this for a while, but our pediatrician broke it down for me with this: She said, "Ashley, if your child had vision issues and needed glasses to help see, would you not get them because people told you they weren't needed"? My eyes opened that day and all the opinions and advice from others went out the window. I was once part of YL and can vouch that this nonsense she's speaking on is preached and pushed. There's an oil for everything, blah blah blah. Disgusting. It's possible that this women's son's brain development to where he no longer needed his medication! Just because a child takes medication for adhd doesn't mean they will necessarily be on it forever, and if they are, so what!

I think a big thing for my son with adhd is getting him to take the few seconds to breath before reacting impulsively or angrily. The aromatherapy gives him something specific to do that makes him take those few extra seconds. It’s helping to slow his reaction time, it isn’t curing his adhd or altering his bodies chemical makeup. It gives him a task to do to slow his reaction time when feeling frustrated or melting down. The oils aren’t curing adhd. As I’m typing this you said “sounds like you need to teach your kids DBT”- exactly! The breathing is tough to force a kid to do when already full of anger/frustration so the aroma therapy is a tangible thing to help him take those breaths. Idk if what I’m saying makes sense haha

oh my gosh, so many thoughts...
    1) Just because brain starvation and ADHD share symptoms, does NOT mean that they are in any way linked and you can treat ADHD by treating brain starvation.
    2) She's claiming multiple products/practices for being THE product/practice that "cured" her hyperactive son. Which one is it? If one really worked, then why do you need multiple things?
    3) At first I thought, Chelsea, why are you comparing your hunger throughout the school day to her son? Then I realized, this is why nutritional advice generally isn't just given out (by professionals) to the masses like one shoe fits all!
    4) Ma'am, source.
    5) Thieves is not a disinfectant. It grinds my gears to see this. She is absolutely fear mongering and mom shaming with this one.
    6) "Nourish the brain" with Young Living to cure brain deterioration? Shame on her. Don't feel bad for sharing their info. They should feel bad for taking advantage of people who are suffering.
    7) Flouride levels in toothpaste are safe and necessary, you looney toon! - Side note, I have bad teeth nightmares too. It's terrifying.
    8) The first mom seemed so much more humble than the second one (Courtney). Courtney seems like she's trying to win a Mom of the Year award. I think it also makes a difference that she's literally looking down on us due to the camera angle. The other woman was at least likeable and I could sympathize with her.
    9) Rose essential oil reminds me of my great grandmother. Are those children okay? Were they taken?
    10) Truth does not equal positivity. Just cause things are chaotic doesn't mean they're not true. She's conflating two completely different things. So, basically, if it's negative, chaotic, scary, that's not true. Bollux.
Dang, this was an exhausting video.

It's baffling how the inquisitive mind of these people falls short.
Child has an attention disorder and they want avoid a lifetime of pills - great!
They look into diet, lifestyle, environment etc - great!
They ... join a commercial cult and start shilling snake oil.
Like what happens between step 2 and 3

This is actually so dangerous. The woman who talked about her children is very well-spoken and talks authoritatively, has an emotional and relatable story, and, like you said, she sprinkles bits of truth in among the misinformation. Not only is this so illegal (!!!) but it’s unethical and gross!!!! It’s horrible that she was in such a hopeless and lonely situation that she felt like she had to turn to this, but that doesn’t excuse the danger she’s putting so many other people (including her family!) in.

It’s also OK to feel angry about a medical diagnosis. This and any other feelings she had as a mom are perfectly valid. She wasn’t just angry and decided not to do anything. She learned about it. They made changes. They even put him on medication. But it’s still OK to feel angry.

As someone with ADHD and scent sensitivities this woman can do one. I have taken most fragrance out of my life because it triggers my migraines and if someone tried to rub essential oils on me I would go into attack mode. Especially lavender, lavender could go extinct and I would not care

Something that made me extra uncomfy during that story is how much she revealed about her kid. A lot of it wasn't her story to tell and if I was in his shoes I would not feel great about my mom claiming my struggles and deciding how they're going for me and whether they're better or not because of whatever she's doing. She never said he said these things to her or that he's fine with her sharing them. So she's just assuming that his ADHD is better cuz of her oils and helicoptering, and that's pretty dangerous.

I used to teach elementary school and middle school music and chorus, and teach private voice lessons. The idea that the teacher said that he couldn’t move up to a more advanced choir because he was on ADHD medication is absolutely ludicrous and unethical. I am ashamed that another musician would tell a child that.

as someone who depends on anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication to live my best life, this is all so yikes and dangerous D: disappointed but not surprised.....
Medication isn't for everyone, but the stigma against it has to stop! It's not meant as a cure all either. My health depends on me keeping a routine, good healthy diet, healthy coping strategies,
etc. in COMBO with my meds. It took lots of different trials of meds and years to find the right combo for me and they just help me regulate everything better. I wish the best for her son. There's so much ableism and stigma against mental illness she's perpetuating is so gross and harmful....

    • @SniffyTugBoat
      @SniffyTugBoat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

thank you~ I didn't realize that my meds weren't cure-alls until my psychiatrist referred to them as "pharmaceutical coping". they were there to help me cope with the symptoms of my mental illnesses, not make them go away. they also worked better in conjunction with other coping mechanisms that I learned over the years. I'm no longer medicated, but I still use the coping mechanisms I've learned every day and they help me more than I ever could've imagined. learning to take better care of myself and my surroundings also helped a lot. going to a DBT group and executing what they taught me in group in my everyday life helped a lot. imo, I couldn't have learned any of that if I hadn't been on meds and gotten to a stable place to learn those things.

I hate the stigma with getting your child tested for adhd shouldn’t exist. It’s figuring out what the issue is so you can then address it. It’s a test to decide if they have it, it’s not a “I want to drug my kid” test. It really discourages parents from even getting their child tested!

Pretty much every time I've seen a new dentist, they take one look at my teeth and go, "you grew up with somewhere that has fluoride in the water, huh?" They then proceed to tell me how they wish (whatever place I was living at the time) had it added to the water, too. It clearly makes a huge difference for developing teeth, because other than the first 12yr of my life, nowhere I've lived has had it in the water. Even if you wanna rail against putting it in the water, telling people to toss their TOOTHPASTE because it has it!? Ugh their fear-mongering knows no limits...

As a person who has struggled with mental health and undiagnosed ADD (until age 27), I have enjoyed using essential oils/blends to help calm my anxiety or help me sleep (as there is actually some good evidence for some aromatherapy to help with these).
HOWEVER, guess what actually helped me get to the root of my issues? Meditation and therapy. Ain't no way an essential oil is going to reach into my childhood to deal with the problems that I'm now unraveling in my adulthood.

As a former teacher one thing to keep in mind when home school parents talks about how much better their child’s behavior is is this:
When you don’t have other children to compare their behavior to, you have a skewed baseline. A child’s behavior at home by themselves can be drastically different than how they behave in a structured public setting with other people around. So saying your child’s behavior is so much different because of oils…. No ma’am, you changed every factor of his day.

I had a young living hun go on Facebook asking for help for her AdHD son ( 6) several of us , knew her from church and were throwing up tips and things that helped us in school and ways to reset your perspective on what is considered “normal”. She had the audacity to private message me saying that she cured her son with oils and she could do the same for me so I wouldn’t have to “suffer” anymore. I went Offfffffffffffffffff…. I told her she is full of shit and a shit person for ignoring the fact I told her I love myself and assuming I wanted to be “cured” and by claiming her potions would fix a neurological pattern of the brain.
Also… it’s funny how the mood are always sharing these “success “ stories and never the kids saying it works . These kids are learning to modify their behavior to not disappoint their parents not being cured !!!!

So I understand that detergent scents can be distracting but most people probably have a scent they can’t stand and find distracting, I don’t think me hating detergent smells makes all detergent evil lol

I actually think that a lot of smells are not necessary - we use unscented everything. But I am not some oil slinging person. We have allergies. And just because it is an essential oil does NOT mean that you wouldn’t still have sensitivities to them. They act like because it is “natural” it can’t be irritating.

    • @maryeckel9682
      @maryeckel9682 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Ironically, as a fragrance sensitive person (neurological and pulmonary), I absolutely hate essential oils. Eucalyptus, lavender and frankincense are like kryptonite to me. I also ise fragrance free everything, dish soap, laundry detergent, body wash, the whole nine yards. It's becoming easier to find all the time. But it's not a matter of not liking smells, it's that the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that convey smells actually make me ill.

As the mom of a very energetic three yr old, who is currently getting evaluated for ADHD and autism, I find that physical activity through the day is so helpful. He goes down easier for his naps and bed time and is generally in a better mood. No need to slather him in smelly oils. Eww no thanks.
