This video seriously sold me on the monotribe. Other videos tend to be very monotonous and tend to drag. This video was straight and to the point telling you everything you need to know. The selling point for me is when it was mentioned adding fx to the unit actually makes it sound better, and then proof to back up that statement. I'm most def going to attempt to find a modded monotribe in the near future. Thanks for this video.
i had a monotribe with midi and other mods that installed my self.. sadly i sold it to buy a novation xio-49.. which was then stolen.. i miss them both :(
I thought you were making this up "cheap, noisy, and harsh" but I got mine in and made a track with it, HARSH AS ALL HELL!!! this thing will seriously split your eardrums. I'm glad you are using a warming sort of recording chain of some sort. Next time I'll use my JDI and neve clone preamp instead of the API. a bit noisy but I like that. cheap, not quite, wish it was cheaper. I actually tried to compose a bassline on this from my mind, but, it was literally impossible. Can't wait4 MIDI mod
Cool demonstration, it sounds really good multitracked. I was going to get one of these, but instead decided on the Nanozwerg by MFB. So glad I did as it crams a lot of parameters into a small, cheap and very good sounding box. I was bowled over :)
You really got a lot out of this little beast. Sounded really good. I’ve always had a beef with the monotribe, it’s waaay overpriced for what it delivers compared to the monotron line and the volcas. For 200 it should come with midi and separate outputs. How much do modded units go for then? Cheers
You are a great reviewer! As someone said below your reviews are "thorough and informative" and I should add FUN... Welcome back to doing reviews, would you please review the Electribe 2 now ;) Thanks.
Yes - I have the audio connection to get the actual audio recorded. MIDI is just a data connection that sends/receives information like which note to play.
I had the same mods done by the guy in penn. A lot of mods for the money. Good to see your vids. Btw I just got midibridge to play animoog, alchemy etc on my Synthstation which I am excited about. That was easy to set up, but Could you show some examples of setting up core midi in the Mac enviornment to enable app to DAW sync?
Hey ! I really love the music you made with cubase ! Did you record it ? Could you post it in another video just to enjoy the beautiful music that come out that crazy machine ! Thanks !
The easiest way is to record the parts in multiple takes. Deactivate the drum stuff, and record just the bass. Then deactivate the bass, and record the drums on a different track. That way you can independently put effects on each part.
if anyone's interested I actually devised a mod to get this to pass Audio Input through the filter and LFO, WITHOUT the synth voice being heard. Details on the Gearslutz "monotribe" thread. Basically you find the top "monotribe mod" sites on Google, find the picture of the three "wave out" pins, and short those to ground with a 3PST switch to mute the oscillators, that way all you hear is what's coming in the audio input jack...MS-20 filter! or what have you. Pretty useful I think.
You still need to record audio if you use MIDI, but the advantage is that you can sequence entire parts (like verses and choruses) and record them all at once. Using only the Monotribe, you'd have to do it 16 steps at a time.
was wondering how it would sound hooked up to my KP3 or even my miniKP? I mean, those have tons of effects that would layer the sound, but now I'm worried about having to mod my monotribe once I get it since I have never done it before. I don't want to ruin my unit by fucking up some soldering or something.
Great demo mate.. i been meaning to purchase one of these for a while now, and i realize that for the full potential it's going to need mods. unfortunately i am no good at all when it comes to mods/installation and would love if you could help me out going about purchasing a fully modded one like you have in this demo? Any info would be much appreciated :)
I really enjoyed this demo, especially where you show the multitracking and where effects are added! Is there any benefit to midi-ing out to your DAW rather than going out the audio out into the sound card?
toooooo freaaaaakin goood , I am soooooo happy to see new videos from you , & the end bit with the synth in ur pocket walking away , hahahahahahahaahhaha priceless !!
could you please point me in a direction on how to mod for separate outs for the drums along with the other drum tone mods?? I've already found the midi in/out mod-kit.
"On the go" mean easily transportable not "it fits in your pocket". If you want that, get a monotron. (which also can be modded for midi and/or cv gate sync)
In 1981, Roland corporation released the tb 303, a bass synthesizer with built-in sequencer. *100% analog. *Amazing design. *Poweful Sound. *Very compact. In 2011 Korg released the monotribe, a bass synthesizer with built-in sequencer. *100% analog. *awful brick-design. *limited sounds capability. *not compact. What's wrong?!? Anyway, great demo.
Hi, I am useless at electronics but love instruments in particular my monotrons and Monotribe and I have a question I'm wondering if anyone can help me with. I bought a quite new Monotribe really cheap( £35) a few months ago. The guy was selling it on behalf of his son and he had bought a mod kit which has the two knobs at the top. His dad knew nothing about it but after experimenting I found if I turn the knob on the right counter clockwise I get a lovely bass sound added to the snare drum. The control on the left I can't seem to notice any change by turning it. It may be very subtle. and I do plug it into an amplifier. I have noticed that a lot of modded Monotribes have the same style knobs and maybe even the same kit. My question is what does the left hand knob do? It seems to be a common mod. Thanks, I'm loving everyones videos.
+Paul Evans I saw the same knob being turned here but I couldn't hear any discernable difference. I'm guessing it's the very same mod. Sorry if I sound stupid.
+WalyB01 I forget where I found a reference to it on the internet, but some phones and things can use a kind of splitter cable that lets you hook up a pair of headphones and a microphone simultaneously -- so it ends up looking like a 3.5mm Y-cable you can plug CV and gate cables into. There's some variation on this kind of adapter that works just fine with a Monotribe, and the one I bought cost under $10 and works like a champ when I've used it with a Microbrute and a a Korg SQ-1 as the CV/gate sources. (If I route audio out from the Microbrute to the Monotribe as well, I can even run both oscillators through the sweet MS-20 filter together.) Once sound comes out, the only thing you have to be sure and do is calibrate the CV connection so it gives you the note range you want and plays the correct pitches.
Most of the audio has no effects; the intro song and the multitracked bit are the only bits with them. I disagree about effects -- I think they should be included as part of an analog review, as different synths react differently to effects, and most people aren't going to use their synths dry each and every time. I find that some synths sound great with chorus and delay, and others sound really muddy and cluttered, and it's good to get a feel for that when demonstrating it.
It was the first generation of Korg's analogue come-back, along with the monotrons, so there are economies of scale and other factors involved affecting the pricing. It does sound much nicer IMHO than the Volca Keys/bass, thanks to that fantastic filter. Still lots of fun if you can get one cheap...
great tune :> how do you separate synth part from outuput? is it possible ? or du you record in another track for compress the drums? i like to apply reverb and delay in my monotribe but it affect the drum part too. dont find tutorials about this. gracias
Yes sure (hi every1!!!!!!) But it needs stuff around. Compress. Delays. Its not that ixnstnt music machina. I got it. Now i exchange: want my Microfreak.
Hello!!!! Sure.... But you can create (write) Crazy acid bass lines or high lines on the fly when red is on. Really improvising. I had tb 303 from 89 to 1998 or so.... i had mc 202.... i miss my sh 101.... im still struggling to keep my juno106. (With which you have the 3 of them... or so.) I bought Monotribe i love it. Its out of time. Crazy.
This video seriously sold me on the monotribe. Other videos tend to be very monotonous and tend to drag. This video was straight and to the point telling you everything you need to know. Please make more vids. Your synth reviews and tutorials are by far the best on youtube. Much respect.
there is a reason why i dont buy a lot of synthesizers, bad performances/demos/reviews, this guy is the exception.
nah, i cant stand the Sonic State bald guy, i dont like his style
LoL why don't you just go to a shop and try them yourself? You can't expect all talented musicians to make videos for you..
Very nice review, thank you for uploading! 😍
I love your demo song you made with the triple bass and compressed and EQ'd drums, sounds great
Behold! The father of the Volca's!
Really nice review. I had a Monotribe and although I wouldn't go back (have plenty of other toys now) you've really shown it off well. Well done!
i had a monotribe with midi and other mods that installed my self.. sadly i sold it to buy a novation xio-49.. which was then stolen.. i miss them both :(
Really been enjoying your tutorials...some of the best on here....keep them coming.
Fantastic! Sounds great! I like the classic synth sounds your getting with this!
Inside Synthesis rules! I am glad you are back making vids.
Nice review and you get some tasteful sounds out of it, unlike some peeps...
Impressive. Thank You. May you have a million views !

Excellent demo. Informative, creative, fun.
Nice little sequence a little on the daft punk side. Sweet! :)

Great review! Really thorough and informative! Thank you for making this!
You can - it has a line input going through the filter. You can also do that with the Monotron, which is quite a bit cheaper.
great demo review, monotribe is a great machine and you handle very good, nice work ciao
You really got a lot out of this little beast. Sounded really good. I’ve always had a beef with the monotribe, it’s waaay overpriced for what it delivers compared to the monotron line and the volcas. For 200 it should come with midi and separate outputs. How much do modded units go for then? Cheers

Really thoughtful video, I just love Korg.

Really great review, thanks.
The monotribe works extremely well with fx.. I think it pairs awesomely with a kaosspad
I would realy like to se a video on how to modify the hell out the monotribe 🤔
Great video by the way 😀
Very professional demo! Thanks!
The easiest way is to record the parts in multiple takes. Deactivate the drum stuff, and record just the bass. Then deactivate the bass, and record the drums on a different track. That way you can independently put effects on each part.
The track is perfect
If you did the MIDI mod already, have a look to "MTribe", an editor and control surface for the Korg Monotribe.
The track at the end is so nice, love it. No full track?
if anyone's interested I actually devised a mod to get this to pass Audio Input through the filter and LFO, WITHOUT the synth voice being heard. Details on the Gearslutz "monotribe" thread. holy shit mate. this was balls out fantastic. thank you. i use mine for basses mostly with my volca beats but this is kind of . . . . . whoah ing me
You still need to record audio if you use MIDI, but the advantage is that you can sequence entire parts (like verses and choruses) and record them all at once. Using only the Monotribe, you'd have to do it 16 steps at a time.
Hey man, I love your videos, keep up the great work !

Great little machine 👍🏻

Great review. Can you list the mods you did or where they can be obtained? Thanks.
Great equipment and perfect music and sounds. Congratulations.
Tell me, how can i find it with the drums knobs the same like yours?
ebay or similar websites.
I wonder if Moog would make something similar, or dare I say team up with Korg to Create a Monster xD
I really enjoyed this demo, especially where you show the multitracking and where effects are added! Is there any benefit to midi-ing out to your DAW rather than going out the audio out into the sound card?
I think l now own this exact modded Monotribe .. the same added components and everything.
Maybe you should show us how to modify the monotribe.
Awesome test, big + for You and subscription. Keep a good work
This video reminds of the time i poured boiling water on my toes to see if i was capable of feeling things again.
Nice work!
So fucken dope dude!
toooooo freaaaaakin goood , I am soooooo happy to see new videos from you , & the end bit with the synth in ur pocket walking away , hahahahahahahaahhaha priceless !!
could you please point me in a direction on how to mod for separate outs for the drums along with the other drum tone mods?? I've already found the midi in/out mod-kit.
that Monotribe fuller, mine is not so, no MIDI, I put the kit has more options of use, congratulations, Korg forever
Thank you! I understand now.
"On the go" mean easily transportable not "it fits in your pocket". If you want that, get a monotron. (which also can be modded for midi and/or cv gate sync)
When I put my headphones in I only hear sound from one ear? Is this normal for a MONOtribe?
In 1981, Roland corporation released the tb 303, a bass synthesizer with built-in sequencer.

Can you hook this up to an electric guitar to modulate guitar sounds?
I wish Korg would make Modulatron series.
Where can I find the modification instructions?
That rocks
I purchased a premodded unit. The previous owner had the mods performed by eBay seller statikwave.
Ok. Thanks! So, you are running a line out the audio out as well as midi? I haven't used midi for recording so, I'm out of my element here.
Great!!! Schematics, please
i can conect a microfone and meke it as a vocoder?
i can't do all these mods, how do i buy a modded one
Where can you pick up a modified MT?
Only 25 views? WTF?! :S
Anywayz, awesome review, as always :)
Its a beast a monstre.
Now i need microfreak.
Great and funny review!! :D
Thanks for this video!!
A++++
BIG minus for me is the ribon station. I am trying to get the 2.11 version running but cables become a mess.
+WalyB01 thats where the midi in would be awesome.

😍👍
Is there a way for me to change the drum sounds to real samples? I would love to have the amen break drum samples on my monotribe, that would be rad.
Just sample them on your computer lol
+MrTrollinglol that is not an awnser to my question, I don't use my computer for making music
+Stijn Beeckman then you need sampler
+MrTrollinglol I do but good samplers cost tons of money sadly
+Stijn Beeckman so your options are save up or use a computer...
Nice Sound!!!

Hey baby, is that a monotribe in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me? XD I'm so gonna get one of them! XD
Sounds like the song in the night life
Should I get this or the monotron delay?
More please....
what's better, this or a polivoks ?
Any idea where this mod build comes from?
Is there anyway for one to acquire your mods?
where or how did you mod it?
How much does this cost and where do you buy them?
I'm buying this used for $100. The mod kits online average cost is $50 and up! Hard to justify buying a mod.
You did the modifications yourself?
Does the addition of CV/Gate control to the operating system change any of your opinions of the Monotribe?
nice mod and good rieview. but fx don't belong in a rieview imo.
these are almost the same price as the korg monologue...could also get a volca keys and fm for the same price as the monotribe...:(
It was the first generation of Korg's analogue come-back, along with the monotrons, so there are economies of scale and other factors involved affecting the pricing. It does sound much nicer IMHO than the Volca Keys/bass, thanks to that fantastic filter. Still lots of fun if you can get one cheap...

i like to apply reverb and delay in my monotribe but it affect the drum part too. dont find tutorials about this.
gracias
how did you get that human voice sound on the monotribe?
That was a distorted sound not a voice.
Route the LFO to the VCF
Set LFO mode to fast
turn up rate, amount and resonance
play with the cutoff
MultiMeschi
That even works on the original monotron
There are finally professionally made Monotribe V2 Overlays on the market, head this way: grousedesign.wordpress.com/korg-monotribe-v2-overlays/
Yes sure (hi every1!!!!!!) But it needs stuff around. Compress. Delays. Its not that ixnstnt music machina.
I got it. Now i exchange: want my Microfreak.
R/C helicopter speed controller without pins.
Blue gold& air authorities.
14sec.
A big difference is that the TB303 can store 64 patterns. The Monotribe, only 1. That's really not good for songwriting on-the-go.
Hello!!!! Sure....
But you can create (write)
Crazy acid bass lines or high lines on the fly when red is on.
Really improvising.
I had tb 303 from 89 to 1998 or so.... i had mc 202.... i miss my sh 101.... im still struggling to keep my juno106. (With which you have the 3 of them... or so.)
I bought Monotribe i love it. Its out of time. Crazy.
