    How is the bridge hum-canceling if only one coil is being used?

    • @prsjackal
      @prsjackal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that it isn’t hum cancelling in a traditional sense. Rather that the second coil, while not active, reduces the hum by around half based upon its physical proximity to the active coil.

      @@prsjackal Makes sense. Thanks.

      Jim Graff thought it was, because it's a Dimarzio HS-2, which actually consists of two stacked coils. It is used because this is a replica of a specific Strat Eric Johnson owns, which he modded. What Graff doesn't seem to know is that only the upper coil is used (which was essentially a replica of old Strat pickups). So no - it doesn't cancle hum in this configuration, but actually it could, IF you change the wiring and use the dummy coil as well. It's a simple mod. In old interviews EJ told that only using the HS-2 upper coil had sounded closest to old Strat pickups to him. Today he has special signature pickups wound for him, but the "Victoria" is an old favorite he used on many classic recordings, so they wanted it to be exact. I guess Fender had to make a special deal with Dimarzio, because the HS-2 has been out of production for some time.

    Sounds great but why in the world would Fender put a plastic nut on that?

      Eric requested it that way.

      I don’t get it either as the Custom Shop version has a Micarta nut. Though Eric reportedly spec’d everything, I have to question whether he spec’d both versions or whether Fender made the unilateral decision to use plastic on the non-Custom Shop variant. The question is whether to replace the plastic nut with a micarta nut if you have the non-CS Virginia?

    That position 4 out of phase sound is pretty horrible

      @@ATX0705 and it's pivotal to some of EJ's tones, like his koto technique, and I think he's use it in conjunction with his Dumbles to get that very buzzy horn like lead/dirty rhythm tone.
