I'm 100% sticking with AMD going forwards as the extended support for the same socket type offers the type of drop in upgradeability that Intel will never offer - they would rather force you to do a full systems refresh each time (moar profit).....!

I've had a pretty good gaming experience on my 7950x3d aside from getting TWO defective motherboards in a row. One MSI and one ASUS. Once I got things up and running the performance has been great and the user experience has been fine. I've only had time to play some games in my library but the performance in game has been exceptional so far. I haven't had to mess with anything for core affinity. Game bar has mostly been doing its job handling that for me. Its paired with an RTX 4090 and 64GB of 6000MHz CL 30-36-36-36-96 ram and it has no issues except in Elden Ring which I am convinced is cursed because it randomly hitches on every PC I own. I gave up troubleshooting that game because every single other game I have runs flawlessly. Elden ring loves to hitch about 1-3 times an hour but I'm convinced it is the game not my rig at this point.

if you set the 7950x3d to let driver decide instead of cache, using xbox game bar does this for you, no bios changing needed. if a game is running on the wrong cores, you can go to the setting for the application, and set as game in xbox game bar. I have one an don't run into issues, unless its me being dumb. The only thing is if you try to increase the frequencies in the bios, it will make the theoretical speed of the Vcache CCD the same speed and make everything run the that until they are full.

I dont use my PC for any productivity, and I've been a gamer for 25+ years, I've built PCs myself, and I just builta new one last month with 7800X3D.
This was the first time I switched from Intel to AMD CPU, let me say this, I'm upset I didn't do it sooner. Previously I had a 11900K with a cheap motherboard, the 11900K was running 15-20% worse than expected stock score because the motherboard cannot deliver the voltage it needs, I had to undervolt and manually set all the other values to just make it run stock, the 240mm AIO I had was also struggling to cool it at high core speed.
With 7800X3D, it draws so little power/voltage, I don't need an extravagant motherboard to make it run well, 240mm AIO for cooling is pretty much an overkill after undervolting it with no performance loss

Back in January 2023 I decided to go with i5 13600kf and not with 5800x3d, because in this case intel was the better overall performance in gaming and workloads - 7800x3d was not released yet. Later I got an offer for i7 13700kf for a very good price, that is why I got the i7 now and sold the i5. From todays perspective the 7800x3d is the best in gaming and if the CPU would be released earlier, I would go with AMD in any case. The i7 13700kf is a performance beast and also very good in gaming. However in this generation I stick with Intel, because i7 13700kf vs 7800x3d is not massive performance difference in gaming in 4k 120hz.

14900K bought of ebay, was delidded and paid GBP 340 which I thought I would never win but surprised when I did...No issues at all as I am running it with a mild undervolt so boost is capped at 5.6GHz all core and 4.4GHz on the e-Cores...320w limit. Temps at max load are in the high 80's thanks to a 360 AIO Arctic Liquid Freezer III and the delid with a Cinebench R23 multicore test hitting a fraction over 41K. Workloads are mixed with encoding, edditing, etc and some gaming like MS Flightsim and Assetto Corse on the sim racing side. Very happy but I never leave voltage to motherboard auto as I know from experience that they allways push to much vcore which is just not required. Everything is running great on Steam with Nobara Linux 39 (KDE), though I still have spare Windows installs around 10/11, don't miss 11. Have a 7800XT and 7900XTX this gen, probably should have spent extra to go AM5 last year but oh well. I can carry my DDR5 forward and well 7800X3D is a great cpu here, 7950X3D if only both CCDs had 3D vcache, if there's a 9950X3D with that, that would be amazing.

    Brian!
For 7950x3D , you need to make sure that the game is ONLY using the x3D chip. This way, it can be faster than 7800x3D
Here's how. Prior to game launch, you need to manually assign which CPU Threads the game will run on. But in this video, it seems that you leave it at default.
This is because not all Physical cores inside 7950x3D is connected to the 3DV-Cache . So when you manually assign the game to run on the Cores that can access 3DV-Cache, all other background tasks are automatically using the regular Cores. So it will be faster than 7800x3D
Yes I'm talking about all games

Is this using something like Process Lasso to handle the Core/Affinity assignment for games ?
Task Manager can do this, but most people forget to switch it manually as you have to go in each time to change it. Something like Proc Lassoo is more automatic, and handles priority/IO and pushes background tasks into more aggressive idle states. I've seen it used for setting/moving Spotify / TH-cam and web browsers into Idle/Efficiency, tagging games into a power profile automatically, so games get a Freq Boost properly.
Apparently you can also set up a command line / shortcut to the game, using "Start /affinity 4B Game.exe" as long as you know/calculate which mask value matches your CPU's cores. You can also run the same using Nirsoft Nircmd, which can apply an affinity change to active programs, i.e. setting up a batch file or shortcut to run the command manually after the game launches.

Setting games to 1080p on ultra settings tells you everything you need to know about gaming in 2024. My recommendation for choosing gaming system would be to start with the monitor's resolution and refresh rate. Once that is done, add 20% (for a bit of future proofing) and select your graphics card. The rest of the components just need to keep the graphics card fed. Again, this is just for a gaming system.

But, given the hardware potential and plans on getting the 5090 when it drops, I just decided to replace my monitor from 27in 1440p 165hz to 32in 4k 240hz. Now I am wondering if I should have chosen a non-3d vcache cpu that scales better with memory... would probably have been better for other things given 4k gaming is mostly GPU limited. Oh well, I can upgrade to a Zen 5 cpu if its worth it. We'll see. Or, be set for a number of years given I won't be CPU bottlenecked for 4k gaming.

You shouldn't need to force the prefer cache option on the 7950X3D because the driver will do that for games in conjunction with Xbox Game bar when a game is detected or manually flagged. The need for that driver is autodetected when you install the chipset drivers and have the R9 installed at the time. If you just swapped the R7 out for the R9, you would've never installed that driver in the first place. Forcing it in the BIOS just makes everything use the X3D CCD resulting in every other lightly threaded task being 8-12% slower.

Hello Brian, is it prudent to invest in a "new" CPU at this moment when upcoming models are on the horizon? These forthcoming CPUs are expected to integrate features tailored for AI tasks that current models lack. While some heavy AI tasks will still rely on GPUs, some may be optimized for CPU processing, benefiting budget-friendly laptops and PCs with integrated graphics.
Lately, there's been a noticeable price reduction in the latest CPUs, which seems like a strategy to clear stock before the next leap in technology. Features such as enhanced AI capabilities in gaming, video editing, and system navigation could render older CPUs obsolete/undesirable, hence the push to sell them at lower prices now.

Best CPU as of now is 7950X3D.
7800X3D loses in some modern titles.
14900K is a joke compared to these X3D's.
In terms of gaming of course but if you are an Intel fanboy
and want to pay more and draw more power knock yourself out.
I have to say 7950X3D is still power efficient and sits right in the
middle between 7800X3D and 14900K but you get twice more multi
core performance vs 7800X3D useful for streamers, video editors etc.
Haven't bought a CPU yet? wondering if to go with 7800X3D
or 7950X3D or perhaps the next gen Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPU's ?
I would personally wait because Zen 5 is going to release soon,
by soon I mean in the next 3-4 months and X3D's in 2025 April/May.
Ryzen 9000 will without doubt have slightly more cache and higher
clocks but if you wonder if they will beat the previous gen X3D, YES!!
5800X3D is equivalent to 7700X and 7800X3D is equivalent of 9700X.
While 9900X will beat the 7800X3D by 25-40 fps and newest X3D's
well those will be much higher frames then 7800X3D/14900K.
Keep in mind Arrow Lake is coming out too and it will beat Zen 5
aka Ryzen 9000 but it won't beat the Ryzen 9000 X3D's especially 9950X3D.
9950X3D is rumored to have twice more cache and is on both CCD's.
Eventually rest of the benchmarks will be neck and neck gaming wise,
other tasks/applications might run faster on Arrow Lake but here is the
thing why would anyone buy Intel when AMD offers better efficiency/performance..
Number don't lie too high power draw CPU in 2024 is a shame, I do
still pick a slightly slower performance CPU with being twice more efficient.

The 7800X3D is clearly best Value for gaming, and maybe has better performance due to all 8 cores in one CCD chiplet (less latency than two chiplets). But the 7950X3D is still twice the CPU cores in total, so has twice the compute capability, if you also need superb workstation performance.

Pretty great. dont have to upgrade PSU or cooling or anything stupid.
Plus saved cash by using 5600MHz RAM cos the large cache makes memory speed less sensitive as it has to do less trips to RAM.

Although I agree instability is a big no no, comparing results with a cpu that is proven to be unstable on the settings you are using is not fair or genuine. Performance will certainly suffer if there is instability, even if it does not crash. My 14700k has taught me that much. I have no preference for either cpu, they both have their own strong points for sure, but I feel you should have tuned the intel clocks, voltage and ram to the best possible settings as that what everyone who buys a 14900k does. A 7800x 3d is virtually unaffected by ram speed and doesn't oc at all really but you should have shown both at their best, or at least on stable settings.

That 7800x3d temperature looks high compared to mine, on an arctic freezer3 360 45% fan speed in cinebench mine stays at 79-80°, I've only seen it go past 85° in y-cruncher BKT for a few seconds.

Brian, you should redo this test on Linux! Why? Because it is well known that the threadscheduler on Windows sucks, especially for more than 1 CPU/CPU-chiplet, which is why you get a higher performance on both Linux and macOS (FreeBSD foundation) than on Windows. You would be the first techtuber who tests if the 16-core Ryzen CPU does or does not perform less than the 8-core Ryzen CPU, to test if it is Windows or the extra CPU-chiplet which causes a worse performance for some games. I would be happy to help you set up a Linux distro but if you want to make it easy for yourself then run something like Bazzite, it is made for gaming. You can install it within 5 minutes and run it without any further configuration.

did go the i5 12600k since intel was priced out those sku
was making more sense to me than to run after last gen out wich priced out of my budget the i5 14400 is about the same of what i got at least to my understanding and managed some nice saving.
ryzen 7000 and intel 14 gen are so priced in my market in canada make no sense for someone rocking a old rx 6700xt work for me at 1440p so far so good may regret later but i tend to prefer to upgrade sooner and keep money for it i'm deal hunter when come to component choice rather aiming top sku
i aim rocking flavor of budget and change more often more fun to build that ways for me whitthing lower budget
next big test for me gonna be outlaw from ubisoft star wars game and probably baldulgate'S wich will run just fine hopefully.
