    You can not see through forests, they block vision entirely. There are specific "light forests" where you can neither see inside or out of. The only exception being that a scout INSIDE can see out. Both of these mechanics create a scenario where you can ambush someone who's not specifically watching out for this. I used it with horseman with mongols in closed beta to catch a bunch of longbows in age 2 immediately in melee.

    Units have a slight animation when changing directions. In AoE2 when you have a group of archers and you move them forward/back, they're instantly turned sprites in less than a frame (under 17ms) whereas in AoE4 there is a slight animation for a unit to actually turn. Its sort of like the difference in the instant turns of League of Legends and the animated turns of DOTA. The end result of this is that scoot-shoot micro with archers isn't quite as good as in AoE4 since they have slight animations that delays the retreat. It might not be as easy to see, but its easy to feel when playing and switching between the two games.

      Wow I didn't know this ,in MOBAS a character turn rate can be a huge deal since by their very nature you are controlling a single unit most of the time and that influences how you deal with the enemy team in the early game. For example mid lane players need to compete constantly for resources with the enemy mid lane player and having a higher turn rate might allow them to harass with attacks the other player while using their higher turn rate to get out of the enemy mid player attack range before they are hit

      better, they have homing missiles, you legit never miss, it will bend around and hit. (it's dumb tho)

    Another interesting point is the charging system, i.e. cavalries will do a powerful push with a very high attack that even pushes the enemies' units away. The charge does about double the damage as a normal attack but can be stopped with longbow pikes and spears.

      Thank you for mentioning this, I've been wondering if that was the case! The visual and audio design of the cavalry running in and attacking seems to imply a charge attack, but I didn't know if it was just for aesthetics or actually conveying some mechanical information. I love this addition to the game!

    I think the landmark thing is a definite upgrade since it allows for more complex strategy permutations

    Don't forget that the game time is actual real-time. In AoE2 its sped up, so when a tech says it takes 1m to research, its the equivalent in AoE2 to over a minute and a half. Closer to a minute and another 42 seconds.

    You forgot that stone walls can only be taking down by siege. Infantry or similiar are useless alone (maybe that's why you can research that they can build rams)
    Then melee troops start to burn placds down, doing dmg over time
    And of course the things other comments mention like ranged units go into melee

    Also, men-at-arms are excellent against archers. Infantry with shields actually act like tanks against light pierce. Which is why the archer and crossbow are separate lines of units. Archer is great against light-armor while crossbow does great vs heavy armor. The idea of entirely separated armor sets really changes a lot. There is no "skirmisher" equivalent either, and to be honest it never made sense that javeliners would do well against archers.

      The skirmisher had a shield meaning, which similar to the men at arms was good against arrows

      Yeah from meat not decaying, to arrows not missing (you can still dodge mangonels), to farms not needing reseeding, it is moving more away from micro and more towards the macro decision-making. There's a lot more options I think to consider for each factions as you go through ages.

      @@McSniffle There is micro, but it's a different kind of micro. More centered around abilities than split second unit movement. AoE 4 has more units with abilities, and those abilities are stronger than in AoE 2. And it's not just explicitly casted abilities like the mass convert monks or deploying palings from longbows. You also have passive ones such as cavalry charging on their first attack or spearmen grounding themselves against charges when stationary. There's also a more interesting hill bonus this time, with penalties to LoS or speed and no charge uphill. Archers switch to melee when you get close. You also can fight from walls and set up ambushes.

    Archers when being approached cannot use their bows and are forced to use pathetic daggers, so don't let enemy get close to your archers or they will become helpless.

    A point that's very interesting for new players, is that scouts will report to you when enemy units are near with a voiceline along the line of "Scout reporting, enemy nearby!"
    Honestly, it helps a ton as someone who struggles a lot on RTS as I can simply leave a scout here and there and be immediately alerted of an enemy force coming in
    In general vision also plays a bigger role I feel like, since micro is now slightly less important, and the opposite for macro, it feels like having scouts positioned in stealth forests, or move in front of your army is very useful so you can be intel earlier on exactly what troops they have where

    Good stuff. A major change for me as well is the automatic ballastic+thumb ring for archers and the TC. All projectiles that are shot will basically hit, no chance to dodge them. This severely influences feudal agression for me at least, also makes the TC that much more dangerous against a small group harrasing your eco.

    Great videos, thank you. I would mention that ranged units do not shoot if engaged in combat - like AoE3, something I think is tactically and mechanically great. Also out of interest, why do you not think AoE2 players have played AoE3? Or have I misunderstood?

      From what I get AoE2 players often touched AoE3 for a few hours and then turned back to AoE2. So using AoE3 as reference won't do any good to explain it for a AoE2 player.

      i played both, actually all aoe games, even the online one... age of empires 3 is pure shitty, new tech, cool, but a trash in RTS terms, and i played online ranking count, i can tell, that crappy are pretty but terrible. Age of Empires 2 is my choice and a majority of pro players and people that consume pro stuff. Now, this aoe4 looks like a trash pile to me, when it down the price at least 50% i will try, but, not looks any good at all, i still playing aoe2 for now... i totally are waiting a more visual look like aoe2 but a new age of empires, maybe first world war stuff, can remove stone resources (not work in aoe3) but, amplify the resources pool, put some, not know, metal mining maybe, iron? gunpownder? improve resources stocking location to be protected, but instead what they did? remove micro, remove hill bonus, take out almost all fun from the game, make it noob friendly and less pro drived game... make no sense to me

    I'm quite excited for aoe4, it feels like it has a large core essence of aoe2, and that gameplay formula is what made this IP legendary. I hope aoe4 feels great to play long term, gets continued support, but has its own style to keep it separate from aoe2. So that we have both games to play alongside each other!

    Archer units are almost useless against buildings, whereas melee infantry can QUICKLY torch them down. Melee infantry and even villagers switch to torch weapons against buildings and siege equipment which seem to have different properties than their base weapons in terms of dmg?

    AoE4 does not seem to have clear hill bonuses. Its definitely not damage buffs/debuffs for hills, but its definitely vision at least. There were some reports that you get a slight range bonus for archery so you fire first from hills. Someone also said a cav charge is better downhill, but the beta ended before I had time to test.

      Cav can't charge uphill, so they lose the bonus damage they get from charging. And the range bonus is hardly slight.

    Pretty cool summary drongo, I feel like alot of the hate aoe4 is getting is because its not aoe2 in which case I have to ask, why do you feel the latest aoe game should be an exact carbon copy of aoe2? Perhaps this kind of view is understandable given that aoe2 has like 20 years of history and people don't want things to change. I suppose continuing with that perspective what kind of game does the community truly want? A esports game that aoe2 currently is that rewards godly APM or changes to the formula that bring the highest level of play downward to a more achievable level for a larger majority of the community? Is it dumbing down? Perhaps. But the tried and true formula of easy to play hard to master is still prevalent, its just different. If that scares you I'm sure aoe2 will endure with many likeminded people for decades to come.

      honestly, the mentioned changes are improvements imo. They are dealing with the frustrating parts of aoe2, like laming and walling with houses being op. But I have the feeling that aoe4 will not be as fun as aoe2, at least on release

      @@gunar.kroeger And those points would be easy to fix in AoE2. But laming is IMO not frustrating, at least in high elo tournaments it's a nice strat with also it's downsides for the lamer. In AoE4 everyone would just use real walls without holes, which is also e fun part in AoE2 (except you are the one with a hole ;-))

      The mechanic is the same, but each civ gets to choose 1/2 buildings to advance through the ages (so 8 unique BUILDINGS) which vastly change the kind of military/economic/defensive/tech options you get as you land in each age.

      That's still not as diverse as how AoM civs got favor, for example.
      I was hoping one civ will get an age up tech, another a building, another by training certain units or getting a certain score, etc.

      @@satyakisil9711 AoM has you choose from two different gods. AoE 4 has you choose from two different landmarks. AoM has civs gaining favor in different ways. AoE 4 has civs influence mechanics working in different ways. And so on.

      depends on whether the game is set to standard or conquest
      with standard conditions you can have relic victory or monument victory, with conquest you need to defeat the enemies through war

      @@GepardenK I think it depends on the civ wether it's a bad move. Fast castle age is fine with 1 villager for first age up. If the unit you'll build the bulk of your army with can be build in the dark age, then it also matters less how fast you age up.

    Number 7: sacred site victory condition is actually not a new thing. AoE 1 has the ruins victory condition which works the same way.
    edit: then again your point must have been that aoe2 doesn't have that victory condition.

    The lack of reseed and decay feels like it removes some depth and decision making, but it's fair enough I guess if the player has to focus on different, new mechanics now.

      AoE 3 also had age up choices. I think it's a nice way of putting in some choice for something that is required, allow you to have a decision there instad of simply taking the food and gold hit.

      Its for the map called "King of the Hill" which is basically all centered around controlling the stone/gold/sacred-site on the big hill dividing the teams.

    You forgot the most severe difference. AoE4 ranged projectiles are homing missiles, AoE2's are not.

      @@DanielFrancis-yh7co I think its a good change. Only pros with good apm can do well evading arrows in aoe2, now all player are at the same level. The less micro required, the better for the overall comunity

    you know, when you present like that, aoe4 starts growing on me, but I really miss the tactical aspects of collision between vills/units and the lack of accuracy in range units early game.

    I never bothered hunting boars or other animals stronger than sheep and turkeys for resources because they where stronger and to far away. Guess I won't in aoe4\age4

    Aoe2 is a great game but I don't like quick walls/deer pushing/boar laming, which are all just APM showoffs. Aoe4 has none of those so you can focus on the strategy aspect of the game rather than mashing buttons.

      But those are the highlights of pro level play, so not having them will be a disadvantage in pro level.

      @@ritwikreddy5670 But those supposed highlights come down to APM rather then general strategy and tactics, not force composition or active manoeuvring to counter the enemy. In aoe2 its archer spam, jav spam, occasionally some knights and mangonels a plenty, invalidating many a unit down to stutter-step archers that's made aoe2 into starcraft 2. For now it still seems archers are over turned and imperial age gunners wreck just about everything so perhaps some balancing can be done, but animation changes so the unit has to turn and then move and then turn and attack will curb this high APM madness for the well being of the general community. I don't like the auto hit projectiles but who knows if they can't change it at least positioning will be key.

      with units stacking on each others, werid pathing and lack of tactical depth, I think there's not much micro at all in the game. I ended microing some vills and my first units in early games, but it quickly becomes impossible to precisley click a unit in these blobs, nor do you have the incentive to do it really, because there ain't no hill advantages, no ballistics for projectiles, no physics to the units. Combats are like TABS.

    Can you go over Population caps? I read that you can only reach 200 in AoE 4? where as AoE 2 Definitive you could reach 500.

      Its fundementally different.
      Asymmetric civs, far less micro intensive, much quicker paced i really enjoyed it

    As an aoe2 player, i feel the only similarity to aoe2 is the timeframe. Aoe3 people think it’s very similar to aoe2, aoe2 players think it’s just an aoe3 reskin

      Military is similar to AoE2. Generic units are mostly the same across civs and the blacksmith is similar too. Resources need drop off points like AoE2. Units do not train in batches. Games start with a scout instead of an explorer. Economic upgrades are available in economic buildings and not the market and the trade system is back. There are many similarities. It's not just the timeframe.
