    • @1986BNick
      @1986BNick 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Actually? Monopoly is a strategy game. It may not be warfare based, but it is useful in pondering of decisions and alliances that affect stuff like the poor pawns who go into war for kings and queens or whoever is setting the stones down on the board. If your pawn? All you can really do is just play with a deck or take a chance on the dice that was tossed.

    • @normalwaysplayerone2894
      @normalwaysplayerone2894 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@1986BNick it's more tactical than strategic because player adgency is so low it's nearly impossible to make a long term stratergy. For example I could go into a game thinking 'my stratergy will be to buy all the railroads' and then I could never land on them, or worse land on them only once they've been purchased. The decisions you make are based almost entirely on what is best for you that turn and then you have little to no information (other than moving between 2 and 12 spaces) about what might be best next turn. This is tactical gameplay, not strategic.

    First of all, it seems you guys didn't do your home work so here goes: there are way better games than your very shallow list, most games in the list are here mostly because popularity not quality so here goes.
    Strategy: A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.
    Tactics: A plan for attaining a particular goal (think more, short term)
    Sequence: is a tactical game, you do with what you have you may have the most amazing strategy but if the cards don't appear for you it's for naught.
    Try instead: Ticket to ride
    Cranium has no strategy, you move with dice and if you answer right you advance.
    Try instead: Wits and wagers, codenames
    Ticket to ride: This one I have no problem with. A bit more tactical but at least you have more control of your destiny.
    Monopoly: almost not a game, roll and move, you have almost no control of your destiny. Popular because people don't know better.
    Try: any other game. But seriously, settlers of catan, Space base, century golem/spice road, power grid
    Settler of catan: Same as ticket to ride but way better than the others so gets a pass.
    Carcassonne: Good pick. I don't like it but I think it's a good game with enough strategy/Tactics to be compelling.
    Risk: It's strategic in the sense you can plan what you will try to achieve all right. Not a good game, specially the first version that took 6 + hours.
    Try instead: Memoir 44, risk legacy (good version of risk), small world
    Scrabble: Meh game, I can see strategy on where to place your tiles but the game is not really good.
    Try instead: paperback
    Go: Good pick
    Chess: Good pick
    Simpler but good: Onitama
    Try boardgamegeek.com to find way better more strategic and fulfilling games

Look at all the components involved, if you play by the rules it is not revolved around luck. In monopoly the strategy is in trading and buying and selling at the right time in a way that will benefit you. Sure y can increase the probability that someone will land on your properties by having more but how much properties you have is also determine d by the dice. I don't know if they consider shogi to be a version of chess, but I found shogi to be more complex, as any piece captured can be used as a reinforcement. It makes sacrifice a much more dangerous strategy.

    I like that you included some more recent games. But ever heard of Pandemic? The real game is suppose to last 6 months, 1 game a month, and is ridiculous. The casual game is great, too, kinda like risk but it's all the players together against the disease. Fun and strategic!

    • @TeChNoWC7
      @TeChNoWC7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say ‘real game’, do you mean coronavirus lol - or are you referring to Pandemic Legacy? Because it is split into ‘months’ but this is a game term, not actual months 🤣

    It seems the biggest mistake of WM wasn't just the selections, but being completely oblivious to the fact that there's a large community of people who are very invested in the topic, and have spent years researching and participating in the activity (to which I cannot claim to be a part of) and that they are probably going to be the ones watching this particular video. If they had just referenced any of the gamers (not even the most advanced gamers, simply some of the more popular ones, quill18 comes to mind) they would know some of the "must-have" entries for the list which are absent, and above all else knowing the the inclusion of Monopoly is a catastrophic choice; it's the equivalent of including Pee-Wee Herman in a list of "all-time greatest actors." I like some of the suggested choices in the comments such as Pandemic, but am surprised that no one has mentioned Battlestar Galactica: the Board Game. my understanding is that it requires a good amount of strategy and is one of the more engaging games. More advanced gamers: is this not the case?

    Clearly who ever made this list doesn't know much about board games... 4-10 are overtly luck based games and very cliche. That list of 10 are like the very very tip of the iceberg when it comes to "board games". Only a few of these games make the top 1000 on BGG but none in the top 100 let alone "top 10" haha

    Of the games in the list, only Catan, Go, and Chess are listed as strategy or abstract strategy by Board Game Geek. And let's face it, Catan doesn't require deep thought. The rest are mostly family. You don't get a lot of strategy in games that eight year olds can handle.
