Movie-wise, there has never been a film like this. Comedy-wise, romance-wise, or otherwise-wise, this is a classic! Critique-wise you did a great job as usual, Maggie.

I have to watch this film every December, It’s something my grandmother did every Christmas season from the late 1960s-2008. The Apartment was the last film she watched before she died. She was critical in why I love this art form today.

C.C. Baxter's face in the broken mirror. I saw this movie for about the 10th time at a revival theater in Los Angeles with an almost full house. There had to be some in the audience that were new to the film, because there was a loud and collective gasp at that moment. And you are right, there's not an unnecessary scene or line in the whole thing. Great review. Thanks.

Great review, I love discovering channels that talk about the classics. I'd say this might be my favorite Wilder film - certainly one of the crowning achievements of Wilder and screenwriting partner I.A.L. Diamond. A very unique tale of the organization man, how we become wage slaves to the business model of large companies, and slowly realizing happiness out of the complacency we live in. And done with such wit, humor, and heart. A great work for sure, I think I'll be watching this again this holiday season.

I can tell you felt this review, Maggie. I loved your take on this timely and timeless classic.
Describing the film’s adult lethargic tone as “a giant hangover” made me lol... a perfect analogy for the sandpaper-on-the-brain effect this film gave me, especially upon first viewing; at its bleakest the film makes me almost want to crawl back inside my mother’s womb rather than partake in the soul crushing rat race of corporatocracy.
Luckily, however, this is a “comedy” 🙃 ... and Billy Wilder deftly balances the taste of honey and vinegar in his own inimitable way.
But boy does it still sting.

Great review of a true classic. I appreciated how you discussed this movie's connections to/influence on Mad Men, which is also one of my favorite shows. I actually first heard of The Apartment about 13 years ago while watching MM; in an early episode (I looked up which one it was: episode 1x10 "Long Weekend") Joan and Roger discuss the movie and Shirley MacLaine's character in it. I'm also right with you in your thoughts about Don Draper.

  • @AdamFishkin

If you say so. "The Apartment" has always been elusive to me since first seeing it about a decade ago. It could be that my own experiences are on a different wavelength from the characters here, but some small ingredient always seems to be missing. And yes, the script and performances do go in very mature and perceptive directions ... and then there's the ending, which has a crispness and semblance of closure that may or may not be earned.
But at least it's better than "The Notebook".

One of my favorite American love stories as well. :) Jack in this and in Days of Wine and Roses was at his best and I wish we got more films like this from him. Shirley has some great roles to her name but this is my favorite and like you said, really understated. She's kinda channeling Lilian Gish, but more dejected around the edges. And I hear you about Fred, but as much of a caricature as he's playing him, it worked for me. I have really met some guys like him, and as unreal as the behavior felt, that's how they behaved dating friends of mine. Still, yeah... John would blow it out of the water if they could still have the trifecta's chemistry.
    Great review as always. :)

Although he doesn't have much screen time, the great Ray Walston always adds his particular style of acting. A much lighter Shirley MacLaine movie to see is What A Way To Go! Fantastic Edith Head outfits throughout. A quirky, of its time Jack Lemmon film to see is Good Neighbor Sam.
