    I always compare a film production with a childrens birthdayparty:
    ur parents are the producers who manages everything, u are the director who always has to answer how you want your party to be, what cake, entertainment etc, the film is the good time you promise ur guests to have when they decide to spend time with you

      CrashCourse thanx:)
      Maybe the best allegory is an old school navy sail ship.
      *The producers are the crown, or any other financiers behind the ships voyage. People that are motivated by money, idea or destination etc for the voyage
      *the ship is devided by the upper and lower deck (above and below the line)
      *the captain is the director that decides how the voyage will be executed
      *the first mate is the 1stAD
      *the helmsman is the DOP
      Etc etc

    Great vid! Informative and unambiguous. Although... on a typical indie film, the EP is not always the one who "oversees the whole filmmaking process and other producers involved in the project." That COULD be the case, although on the features that I've been associated with, the EP was primarily the producer involved with financing the film. A creative producer, holding the title of "Producer" was the one overseeing other producers and managing the entire process, from development to distribution. The person(s) who accepts the Oscar for Best Picture is... the Producer. Not the Executive Producer. In television, the EP generally does oversee other producers and the process. That said, I loved the clarity and fun vibe of this vid. Thank you!

  • @timothymclean
    @timothymclean 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    If something goes wrong with a film, someone will almost certainly blame the meddling producers.
    If something goes right with a film, rarely will someone think to credit the producers who made it possible.
    It sucks to be the guy making the trains run on time.

    Don't apologize about the money: Movies are a business. The main producer selects a screenplay for a movie that she thinks will make a lot more in ticket sales than it will cost to produce. Then she sells the idea of the movie to investors (the movie's pitch is the producer's sales pitch to the investors). Then she uses the investors' money to hire cast, director, and production services and organizes the actual production of the movie. When it's finished, she sells the movie to distributors. With luck, the movie sells lots of tickets to people who consider the money well spent; the distributors and investors make big profits; and if the movie helps the whole movie industry by inspiring people to buy tickets to other movies, then the producer might get to accept a "Best Picture" Oscar,

      There are clues to the reference that someone who has never seen the movie wouldn't pick up on. The doppelganger of a caricature can be seen holding a golf club and a hockey stick at various times throughout the video. *The Character* Happy Gilmore was a crappy hockey player turned pro golfer. Not to mention that the name of Sandler's production company is derived from the titles of his movies: 'Happy Gilmore' and 'Billy Madison' ;p

    I’ll explain what producers are MUCH better and clearer than the video did. Producers are corporate managers/supervisors like the one who’s behind you as you watch this video from a cubicle. They’re only called producers and not “managers” because humans are stupid and they have a thousand different types of producers who all micromanage each other for the same reason most companies out there have General Managers, regular Managers and Assistant Managers. Remember Dwight from the Office pointlessly calling himself Assistant Regional Manager instead of Assistant TO THE Regional Manager in an effort to seem more senior than his fellow employees? It’s the same thing with producers. Just think of “manager” instead of “producer” and you’ll understand how it works much easier. Producers work for large studios and these studios are nameless, faceless corporations that have useless jobs and titles that aren’t needed just as much as other big corporations do. It’s why actors and directors usually make fun of them and call them useless. Yes a truly capable producer can carry the entire project but when we’re talking about Hollywood with its large production teams most of them just end up bringing coffee and making 2 phone calls per day. It’s a joke profession and that’s why it’s not more heavily regulated. Just like corporate managers.

    Learning who does what behind the scenes isn't very useful knowledge. Learning the ins and outs of the Art of Film making is. The stuff you are teaching, you can find out in one google search. The art of Film Making could take hundreds. That's what we want to learn. The language of Film. ie if this was Crash Course Pottery, then you'd be telling us what pots do, instead of the art of pottery.
