One book that really made me fall in love with the Morgan le Fay character was Mists of Avalon where it shows the story from her perspective and it really shines some light on her thoughts and how she interpreted events around her.
Morgan is definitely my favourite Arthurian character, but it's sad to see her portrayed either as an evil incest witch or 'the paragon of paganism' in modern media, when she was neither of those in her earliest medieval depictions. I want to add that Morgan is possibly based on the morgens (aquatic fairies) of Welsh and Breton folklore, but her connection to Circe and Medea make perfect sense too. Another potential inspiration is the Welsh goddess Modron, because her husband Urien and son Owain/Yvain are the same as Morgan's family, and because Modron's father, Avallach, is etymologically connected to Avalon. Morgan also appears in later non-Arthuriab medieval literature (like the French tales of Ogier the Dane, where her son is the fairy Oberon and they live happily with Arthur in Avalon). Her home Avalon itself is so interesting too because obviously it's the typical Celtic fairyland, but it's also associated with Glastonbury Tor in both English and Welsh sources, and is referenced in French legends as the home of the fairy Melusine. I think Morgan's origins in the beliefs of the Welsh and the Bretons is a whole rabbit hole in of itself
It's funny, I was actually looking for basically this exact video over a year ago and was surprised no one had really made one. Morgan is done so dirty by modern media. She is so interesting and complex and yet almost all modern media basically just turns her into Evil Lyn from He-Man. I'm writing a novella right now that is a detective noir set in 1946 Los Angeles but has a bunch of Arthurian characters (and other fantasy characters) in it, and I'm determined to do her justice.
I'm actually doing a story as well, though mine is more adventure fantasy. I have been trying to figure out how to portray Morgan well, especially after reading 'Mists of Avalon' and this video was exactly what I needed.
Enrique Duenas My thoughts exactly, and it gets even worse when they get their sons mixed up as well. Mordred is the son of Morgause, NOT Morgan(a). Her son is Sir Yvaine.
"Morgause possesed Morgan once Arthur and Guinivere Killed Her by Merlin's Wrath. Her shadow enveloped the Lady of Camelot in Order to Terrorize her Brother's Subjects via Tyranny of Betrayal Lady Anna Brutally forced The Kingdom Back into Idolatry of her Sister's soul Morgana {Queen of the Fay}^ Dorema Conclave {Witch}
Morgan confused with Morgause kind of reminds me how Nyi Roro Kidul and Kanjeng Ratu Kidul often confuses as the same character but they're actually not. Kanjeng Ratu is ocean goddess that have been exist at the same time as ocean were formed. While Rara is a cursed princess freed from the curse by Ratu and then adopted as her daughter and trusted general.

It is fascinating seeing how a Legend can evolve through time and different text. This is the first time I've come across your channel and I only wish I found it sooner. Keep up the wonderful work!
I read King Arthur in high school, I think she represents the Celtic paganism that occupied Great Britain before Christianity, and Arthur represents the Christianity that was forced on the pagans. So all the stuff she does to Arthur, she's doing that to protect the pagans living in the area.

I love this! I've been working on my own Arthurian inspired novel lately since I've always been interested in the various versions of the lore, and your video essay has given me a looooottt of inspiration. You're so delightful to listen to! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm definitely looking forward to checking out more videos from your channel!
I definitely prefer versions of her where she remains loyal to Arthur, doesn't care that he's technically a bastard born out of wedlock, and loves him as an elder sister is supposed to love her little brother, such as Mists Of Avalon. I don't know if you're too familiar with mythology-based video games, but there is a game I play called Smite: Battleground Of The Gods, where you can play as various Gods and/or Goddesses from various pantheons across the world (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, Japanese, and many others). In that game, one of those pantheons is the Arthurian Pantheon, and Morgan Le Fay is actually the most recent addition to that pantheon's roster (she was added to the game in June of this year, and joins King Arthur and Merlin in the Arthurian Pantheon in that game). One thing that game does for each of its playable characters is kind of put its own spin on that character's lore, and what they've done for Morgan Le Fay's lore in that game is really interesting. At the moment, she is King Arthur and Merlin's enemy, but she didn't start out that way. Initially, she was firmly a good guy, and she was very close to the two of them. However, Guinevere became jealous of how close they were, and manipulated events to drive them apart, and Morgana went bad as a result. Ultimately, her goal is to rule Camelot (and possibly Avalon as well), but for some reason, she wants Arthur on her team, and wants to get him away from Merlin (who appears to have his own agenda, as he seems to be keeping secrets from both her and Arthur). And that's got me really concerned because the way I see it, in the Smite universe, I'm not sure Arthur and Morgan KNOW that they're actually brother and sister. I think Merlin has kept that truth hidden from both of them, and I sincerely hope that at some point in the future of that game's lore, Arthur and Morgan learn this truth and reconcile with each other before it's too late.
Thank you for all your information and your book recommendation. I am working on a short story that is open-ended that involves Morgana and a fan fiction themed in the Harry Potter universe. Your knowledge has been helpful.
A lot of this historical/literary context informed the approach I'm taking with my own planned King Arthur novels. Morgan is the deuteragonist, the other hero of the story besides Arthur. They lead different lives, worship different gods, but are allies. They're family, after all.
i’m currently majoring in english literature and my professor suggested that i write about morgan le fay for a response essay. ur video helped me a lot with my research and it was very well cited so that helped me too !
You are absolutely beautiful Annie. This random internet Joe isn't trying to be disrespectful I just wanted to brighten your day. And you are absolutely well spoken about you're subject matter to boot.
If I were to write a re-telling of Arthurian legends, I probably would make Morgan a morally ambiguous figure. I probably wouldn't have a complete 180 in her attitude to Arthur like Malory did. But having her love her brother Arthur, but hate his wife Guinevere, would make sense, I think.
Unlike you , I am not a professional scholar and academic, just an amateur with a life-long interest in Arthurian and Grail texts. Is there a connection , do you think, between Morgan and the Loathly damsel of the Grail romances? Their ambiguity regarding good and evil seems very similar to me.
I think there is a connection between them, yes! Morgan's appearance in Sir Gawain resembles that of the damsel, and their ambiguity is also similar. This ambiguity is present in many magical women in medieval literature, however, as I'm sure you know!
If anyone ever wants to know more about Morgan le Fay I cannot suggest enough to look into the Welsh original tales of Arthurian Legend and those original characters found in it like Morgan le Fay
Typemoon's Fate series had a golden opportunity to work with this character and they love ambiguities to the point that they will invent some if they don't exist. And they also love King Arthur's lore. But when they got the chance, and to do it for their most successful title to date, they botched it up so badly, the character should not have been even mentioned by them at all in the end product. They blew her character out of control, just could not handle the multitude of attributes they tried to assign to her (which they never explored but assigned anyway), and ended up creating an OC that had nothing in common with the original, with a vaguely thematic similarity. In fact, the character they try to advertise as Morgan (and out of acknowledgment of the unfaithfulness to the source material, they don't add Le Fay), is a complete OC twisted into their own favorite tragic hero tropes, with the Round Table Knights' names and the witch labelling stuffed into her bio by force. In fact, this all started because they failed to even come up with a design to encapsulate her debauchery and ambiguity properly. It's overlooked because the OC and the story was engaging, but the original intention and marketing had been towards an adaptation, so that's a 2/10. All this is to say, Morgan Le Fay is a very heavy character, and even a franchise that likes to convolute whatever it can get its hands on, couldn't handle her. Truly sensational but at least DC and Marvel's versions take one aspect of her, roll with it and do well.
Have you seen the movie Merlin 1998? There is a character they are portraying there, called Queen Mab. do you have any information on her? Also isn;'t the lady of the lake in the official lore? I loved your video SO MUCH
There are actually two Mab. First one is evocated by Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet: she's pretty mischievous and enjoys tormenting people with her magic. The other can also be named Maeve or Medb. According to Yeats, she was an Irish queen who became a fairy after her death. One day, she realises that her husband has a splendid bull, which makes him wealthier than her. She then decides to get a fabulous bull from Ulster but the owner of the bull refuses. Maeve decides to attack them but her warriors are killed by the demi-god Cuchulain and she has no other choice than to use magic to kill him, get the bull and restaure her power.

This reminds me of a film I recently watched, a French film called Morgane et ses Nymphes, or the slightly more outlandish English title, the Slave Girls of Morgan le Fay. It's an erotic lesbian horror, and Morgan le Fay is of course one of the main characters. It appears to be a reinterpretation of Morgan's first story, as in the film she lives in a castle on an island, except instead of her sisters, she lives with a harem of women who she has magically enslaved and granted eternal youth. It is a very strange film, but is one of the only overtly queer retellings of Arthurian legend I have seen. Of course Arthurian legend is littered with homoeroticism, such as in Gawain and the Green Knight. I do not know if medieval literature included any hints in relation to Morgan being potentially queer however. Modern reiterations of Morgansl's character have frequently been queercoded though *cough cough Merlin*, so I wonder if that has any basis in medieval literature?
The Morrigan is normally described as a triple goddess, made up of the Badb, Macha and either Nemain / Neamhain or Anand / Anann / Ana / Anu. To me those last two names seem remarkably close to the Lady of the Lake; Nimue / Ninianne / Viviane, and the sister of Morgan; Morgause / Anna.

@@Medievalannie Nice! The Lady of the Lake is such an interesting figure. A video centered on her would be awesome. Currently, I'm just about to finish Malory's "Morte Darthur". And, truth be told, I'm somewhat perplexed as to the fate of the Lady of the Lake in that tome since, in the early part of the it, she seems to be beheaded by a knight - but then, at the end of the book, the hand in the lake is still there to catch Excalibur when Bedivere finally overcomes his fear of loss and throws it into the water. Well, perhaps the hand in the lake doesn't actually belong to the Lady of the Lake but to one of her "damosels"? Somewhat confused :-) Then again, late medieval English is not my mother tongue as I am a native Dane born in the mid 70s :-)
@Mads Højmark It can get a bit confusing with Malory! The first lady of the lake is beheaded at the start, yes, but then Nyneve learns magic from Merlin and takes up that position, becoming the second lady of the lake, and it is her we see throughout the rest of the book! But there are also damsels of the lake, which make everything a bit more confusing. So don't worry about the late medieval English, it is actually confusing :)
Morgan Le Fay means, litterally. "Morgan the Fairy". A Fairy is a real person, as is a Witch. Fairies and Witches are complete opposites in every respect, the one can never be the other. Witches are complete liars and Fairies only tell the Truth. The biggest lie a Witch can tell is to say the Morgan La Fey is a Witch. I hope this helps. Anyone interested in Morgan should travel to Glastonbury, the "Isle of Avalon" where Morgan is the highest of all Fairies in that Fairy Land. Morgan is Eternal and never dies. Always, somewhere in the world, you will find one who is Morgan. If you are lucky to meet Morgan you will marvel at her. She is the Lady of Avalon, the Lady of the Lake and, in Christian speak she is "Our Lady".
I am morgan of the morgans and you are right I should travel to glastonbury.. I supposedly have ancestry there. I might find myself.. I've been accused of being both a fairy and a witch.. lol.. all mana comes from the tree of life..
Thank you, I enjoyed this video. To confuse matters even further, a few years ago I wrote a tone poem based on the legend of Viviane (Morgana?) and Merlin: th-cam.com/video/7c-TbHiH-Gw/w-d-xo.html I'm afraid she's all evil in this one.

Could you do something on Nimue please
Absolutely! I've been planning on doing a video on the many versions of the Lady of the Lake :)
@@Medievalannie Cheers
@@Medievalannie Thx for clearing things up, Annie. Much appreciated :-)
She is the Lady of Avalon, the Lady of the Lake and, in Christian speak she is "Our Lady".
thank you 😊
I am morgan of the morgans and you are right I should travel to glastonbury.. I supposedly have ancestry there. I might find myself.. I've been accused of being both a fairy and a witch.. lol.. all mana comes from the tree of life..
@@morgasm26 You will find a few faries in Glastonbury and many many witches :)
Many witches in literature are actually fairies.
Would really love for you to review my book, your contact?
Thank you, I enjoyed this video.
To confuse matters even further, a few years ago I wrote a tone poem based on the legend of Viviane (Morgana?) and Merlin: th-cam.com/video/7c-TbHiH-Gw/w-d-xo.html
