Watched this video for the first time when I was 17 and was profoundly moved by it. Now watching it I’m currently 21, sitting at the first place with WiFi in 47 miles on my own bike tour journey. Thanks, Jed.
You know, it's nice that you find a way that make you content, but the things you say, is not holding water. I lived a life, more or less without any patterns or repetition, in 9 different countries, visiting many more. Still, now, I'm 50, and i wonder where all the time went. The more you move, the more you experience, the faster time travels. It's when i sit down, just sitting, just breathing, listening, feeling, time almost stops. I really enjoy it, i really feel I'm alive. You say you had fear, and fear took you on a journey. Never let fear guide you, in that case, you end up running away from your self, because the fear is within you, not outside. I met people that lived a life without any great travels, but with a peace within that I'm looking for. Also, the biggest routines, you develop exactly when you are travelling, you just don't notice them. Life is almost at a primal level all the time; find food, shelter. Of course, if life is best in this way, for some people, that is good. But nomadic people have the most strict patterns of all. They repeat the moves all over and over again. The biggest journey, is inside you, for this, you don't have to run away all the time. Peace out :-)
This summer, when I was 16 years old, I decided that I wanted to experience something new, something memorable, so I took my bike and went from Slovenia to Portugal (4500 km). It took me two months and I enjoyed every minute travels. I experienced so many beautiful moments and made many new friends especially because I was on a low budget. Now i have many stories from my trip, that i will remember until i die. I just want to say that my life has changed for the better and it can change yours too. You don't need much, just an open mind and a big heart. :)

@Anuj patil what kind of bike do you use? I was wondering if I should get a road bike, a fixie, or maybe a cross country bike for urban rides and occasional touring. I have a budget of around 20k, can stretch it close to 30 by next year maybe.

Well said! As a fellow bike tourer (ist), I can relate to the hyper-alertness, from constantly moving through unfamiliar areas; although after a tour, I appreciate returning to familiar comforts and patterns, such as sleeping indoors, regular showers and use of a kitchen and shower.
This is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Being 21, I have no plans for what I want to do after college except bike across the U.S. with my dad. This is inspiring!
I did it three years ago, solo from Scotland to N. Africa. I miss this so much that I want to go and do another one. This man is so right about routine...bless him for seeing what so many don't!
I'm already planning to quit my job and will file a resignation next week as I'm not really happy with my work and found this video. This motivates me even more. Because this is exactly the same reason why I'm going to leave everything behind and it is indeed scary. You know, not getting out of your comfort zone for fear of losing everything. But there's nothing more scary than waking up one day and realize that you really haven't lived your life. Life is so beautiful. Go out and live it! (Can't wait for my own adventures starting this year. Shoutout to my late best friend Alan Watts and my philosophy fiend boyfriend, Jonathan. Je T'aime, mon amour. You guys inspire me greatly.)

This is honestly incredible, i feel like you literally spoke the words in my head. I love everything about this and cannot agree more with the dialogue
Being away from friends and family is tough. This might seem fun initially but after a month alone having comfort and your relationship with others back will feel great. There's some truth to the expression "there's no place like home". What my wife and kids bring to my life I could never give up.

Last week I did same experiment in my life, cycling in Khandala ghat, Maharashtra, India. It was awesome experience of getting new friends and sharing love.
how did he cross the Darien Gap? Amazing journey. That's what I call living... I rode 75km in a day last week and 57km again today. How amazing it would be to be able to ride across continents!
That cheeky smile at the end says it all! I have been working and travelling abroad for almost 4 years now and even today after walking 10km around Dharamsala mountains I have that little smirk, I think all travellers do. We have figured out that life doesn't have to be so formulaic. That true happiness is living every moment, being shocked, scared, angry, happy because those moments are when we are truly living and there is no better way of feeling this than with travelling. thank you for the beautiful words and videography. Keep on smiling my friend...
This has motivated me so much. This year I have planned a charity bike ride to London (240 miles in 2 days) and also I am planning on a month long trip from UK to Gibraltar in August. and after that who knows..... Thanks Jedidiah Jenkins
Excellent observation! Also remember a long bike tour will not immunize you from a time eating routine, but it will give you a point of reference to keep it in check. I quit my good job at age 42 and rode 5,100 miles across the US. 13 years later I'm in that kind of routine. Getting older and losing energy has a lot to do with it as well. I've worked since that long tour with the goal of retiring early so I can get back on the road. Just 2 years away.
I know this kind of speech resonates in a lot of people, but it doesn't do it for me. I like taking my time, having my routine because it liberates some other time slots for me to just sit, listen to my environment, read a book, listen to beautiful music, talk with my friends... My "amazing moments" are in simple things, and I simply love it. A hot shower, drinking tea in my hammock in the morning, laughing with my friends, preparing a meal with my lover... I guess we all experience life in different ways. Let's just take moments to do nothing to evaluate how much we have and what we can do we all the beautiful things around us, be it a friend, a book, a sound, a colour: choose.
I'm not sure how many times I've watched this, many times. I'll be 62 this year, I can relate to time passing fast. I'm ready to hit the road for awhile, once I start drawing my social security.
This is where Im at in my Life. Routine! And once I get on a Bike my Brain comes alive! Best 4:18 minutes I watched in a long time! ThankU my friend I hope I see U out there on a Journey!
So much truth here and so inspiring! A big trip like this may not be possible for everyone, but we can all take even little steps to thrive and keep that sense of wonder. Love it
I have completed a 355 mile ride, and it was truthfully one of the happiest times I can remember. It's not just about the bike, it's about getting out of the routine. A mind and soul that is wide awake, and 100 hundred years on this Earth becomes 1,000. So beautiful, and rings so true!
Fantastic!!! I´m going to a short bike travel (10days, only) to Pagatonia. I´m really looking foward to it! I´ve always been that guy who never take vacations, always taken by obligations and routine.
If there is something big I want to do in my life it's to give a better life to my parents who have followed a routine their whole lives. For this fellow in the video it's traveling that's a thrill, for you it might be something else. Hating your life for what it is, is the worst thing you can do to yourself. Ask a homeless person what they'd give to not worry about having a roof and food everyday. Enjoy each day as it comes. For me, I love my commute to work, my job is average, I earn peanuts and I hate my boss to the core but I love to take it all out at the gym, love to discuss sports over a drink or just not think anything on a long drive on the weekend with my girl. Dear people commenting about their lives being shitty, count your blessings before it all ends.
Regardless of what you say, your way of living is a compromise, even in your case. You see life is uncertain and you have no reason to not risk it all. But, if you're really content with what you've got and get a good night's sleep then you won.
This is why I love hiking and backpacking. I'm 20 and I've always loved the outdoors. I've hiked over 500 miles in my life so far, and each year lately I've been hiking over 100 miles. I hope to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, as well as the Wonderland Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, and several other smaller long distance trails in my lifetime. Hiking is everything you could want; those who haven't tried it I encourage you to get out and hike.
This is way better than the "Motivation Gurus" ... the "Inspiration Talkers"... a simple guy, who saw something clearly.... presented it with simplicity and honesty and did not want to sound like a "master". Much appreciations Bro and thank you. Be happy.
This whole thing has become my life verse. 🧬 What an amazing video. Thank you Jedidiah for your words, and the Nat Geo gentleman behind the camera for documenting.
did a 6 month ride from Missouri up to North Dakota west to Oregon, south along the west coast to Southern Californian, then back east to Missouri, turned out to be an amazing/priceless experience, If someone told me I could have a million dollars if I hadn't done that ride, I could easily say no thanks.
@@skyp6051 just get on your bike, ride around 30-50km a day and then after few months you will know your limits and thats when you should start planning
This was rather beautiful. Long cycling expeditions just transform you and the way you see the world. I haven't been this far and this long on a bike yet, but I would be doing that in the time to come.
That is a very important message. Totally agree. I've been on a few mutliple day bicycle tours and still remember every single day. Some landscapes were photographed by my brain and are still with me. Why? Because I was very awake, excited and thrilled. We need to avoid routine and do something adventurous from time to time. This summer I'm doing a 16-day tour in Norway cycling the fjords. Wish me good weather! Best wishes!
I have done this and take it from me every word the guy says in this video is like gospel, the truth of it is really hard hitting! Quit your daily grind and just do it. It was by far the best thing I have and probably will ever do in my life!
He is indeed... except, we have a steeper hill here in Swansea called 'Constitution Hill', it forms the last leg of the British Cycling Tour, check it out it's a killer!
I have seen thousands of video like this, but amazing thing about this video is, the words you spoke about life and brain just got penetrated in my mind. Today i know what is life and where i have to go. God bless you
Great! Inspiring video - not because it's edited with grand cinematography and motivational music, but simply because it has a wise message that speaks truth. God Bless
Just finished a bike trip through Japan and I'm already itching to get back out on the road again! Booked my flight to Canada in July and I'm hoping to cycle all the way down to Argentina! Can't wait!
The interesting thing in being a cyclist is that the fact of riding everyday won't be never ever understanded as a routine- you get bored riding one destination- you set off to another one, you're bored of riding on the road- you ride mtb, Winter comes in and its snowy- no worries- just go on a fat bike or ride the trainer. Its just one of those hobbies that never lets you get bored of- you just find new routes. And if you like traveling but don't want to spend money on petrol- pack up,hop on a bike and just go! I am always proud when I think of all the miles that I have done on the bike and haven't got to spend a penny on petrol.Well yes I went through a few bikes, but every mechanicaly sound bike should do the job. I went through a few bikes simply because I do road races and had quite a few tumbles and accidents that had taken a toll on the bikes. But other than that, just for travelling you needn't have more than one bike for everything.
I didn't think mtb was truly necessary until I tried to bicycle up a grass hill on my commuter. Large wheel radius makes it hard to travel upward even on the smallest gear ratio . I bet it's awesome to have biking options
Thank you. The responses below are interesting. We all must ride our own path. Brains are like bodies, different. I love that you’re exploring who you are. My brain needs an equation of routine and change. We all need to keep learning and exploring!
Everyone keeps commenting how they can't do what he does because they have no money or that they have too many responsibilities. But, that wasn't the point of the video at all. It's to break the routine, and that can be through anything. You don't need to do what he does. Do your own thing
@@ibrahimhakimi4097 What point?... that the most successful people today and in our history lives by a routine. Even Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad lived by a routine.
Whatever you do, you're gonna die one day. So better prepare for the hereafter. Find the true path to God and follow it. Thats what wise people would do...
I'm in the beginning stages of my trek across america, also guided by fear of the unknown. there's just something deep down inside me that insists on me taking this trip for spiritual growth. this video was encouraging. knowing im not the only one with this feeling. I plan on going next summer but I'm planning now. much love.
Such an amazing story/style of life. I don’t want to say that I’m jealous of you (though I am), but I wish in some point of my life, I can be so brave as you. Thanks for sharing this experience with us.
I love the way he thinks there's any routine left in your life when you have kids, or that travel is the only way to re-adjust your outlook. I do love that aspect of travel, and yes routine does kill your brain, but that's something you have to watch for no matter what you do. Watching my daughter as a baby marvelling at the laminar flow of water being poured out of a jug, and how much joy she got out of such a simple experience, that times 10k is a life with children. It's not for everyone, but we derive meaning in our lives not by pleasuring ourselves but by devotion to a purpose.
100 years into a thousand. I love that. We can indeed have a different relationship with time. It's a bit like being bored in a room or otherwise stimulated by something clearly fascinating. Same room - but different view! All the best. Mark
I am 18. For the past 5 years I believed that life was about grinding your ass off to one day become the best at what you do (mixed martial arts in my case). Now for some unknown fucking reason I am starting to have such a drastic change of mindset. I had not miss a week of training for 3 years. Now i am on my second week off and it has allowed me to do such great things. From doing carpentry with a friend, to going out for coffe with my father, to planning a trip to the south of Argentina (my lovely country which I know so little of). It has hit me hard indeed and it is weird how one can think he knows for sure what he will do with his life and suddenly acquire a different perspective. All I know is I dont feel any of the pressure I felt before which I assumed was an inherent part of life. Today I just try to do whatever I feel like doing at the moment which is totally the opposite of the "disciplined" regime I lived by. The most surprising part is that people have not questioned me for this, which was my biggest fear. You have no obligation to continue being the person you were a day, a month, or 3 years ago. Maybe someone will find this helpful. Thank you so much for this content!
I'm sure that yours is not "shit". Keep loving yourself and life will be great. I'm 60 now, wife and kids and I bike a lot, but want to retire and do something like this before I'm too old.
Angela Leung some people are blessed with a continuously positive attitude, and some struggle to be positive in the same situations. I think he enjoyed himself more due to brain chemistry than the lifestyle.
I've met people who plan to do lots of things (including travel) "when they retire". Then, later when they retire, many obstacles get in the way. I, like Jedidiah, also wanna live life and explore while i'm young, healthy and daring. Thanks for posting this video! :D
everything costs money, hence we need to be productive on a daily basis to earn income, instead of buying material things with our salary we should invest in taking time off to go on adventures like this guy. amazing journey.
I love what you said and I totally agree to ur statement instead of buying all this useless items everyone could save it for a trip . Everyone should try to be minimalistic.
This is so true, when I worked in an office months would pass by without me even noticing. I have been travelling for the past 4 months now and I am so much more aware of time spent and enjoyed, not looking forward to the weekend, looking forward to everyday.
Wow, thank you! It kind of happened to me: I missed/wasted my thirties kind of. And now, I am sooooo motivated to make the next 10 to 15 years count!!!
What an inspirational video...on how to live totally for yourself. A life spent working hard and raising a family and giving back to your community may be routine, but it’s also virtuous. We need more videos about those people.
A daily routine really is a drag. We're all too focused on the money, and not on the real meaning of life. The moment we let go of our fear of not being able to chase after money, we can really live. Someone once asked, "Why is it that we spend all our health trying to gain wealth, only to later end up spending all our wealth trying to claw back our health?"
gem_k my goodness! I just traveled to South America for a month on my own two months ago. Was telling my friend about it and that I planned on going to Costa Rica soon. She said, "Are you dying soon?" I thought to myself, I am healthy and young enough to travel and ENJOY it! If people criticise you for spending money on traveling while you're young, or... not old, they have a jealousy issue. Im still going for it. Was she expecting me to enjoy travel at 70 years old? Not that you can't but still... no one is guaranteed to make it to tomorrow. I thoroughly enjoy traveling! Now I know what all the buzz is about. it changes you.
Life is short. Go and do the things that will make u happy. While we can see While we can talk While we can walk While we can do it... This video is the shortest but the most motivational vid Ived watch.. When we die nothing is important anymore...but at least we experienced what we want n no regrets...
This is a luxury, VERY few people on earth can just leave and do something like that without forgoing responsability. Amazing yes, I am a endurance cyclist too and understand that having the time to do that is also a luxury. Somone had to build your bike, make your hat, pave those roads, we cant all just stop what we are doing and run around.
No. This is just an excuse to justify one's (your) choices. If adventure, self-discovery, and hardship is not your thing, I don't blame you, but assigning that to others, i think, is a mistake. Luxury, privilege, and the guilt associated therewith is a homemade fiction. Grateful? Of Course. Guilty? No.
I travel by bike for years now, crossed all over my country several times, spending time alone in breathtaking places. I totally understand this guy...
While I sort of agree with the concept of learning new things in order to keep the brain working, this does not have to be by travel. This can be with almost anything. New job, new project, new hobby, new relationship, new offspring.
This guys has probably experienced more in a month than most people will in a lifetime. Get out, travel, and experience new things everyone. You won't regret it! I'm still working on new experiences with a rock climbing trip this fall to Mexico.

Ferries.
100% true. You choose the exact right words to explain why you did it or why you would do it again.
Now just 1 year away.
@@chapter4travels and what about now?
The chaotic lifestyle isn't for everyone. Some more chaotic than others.
Nicely put I concur.
Renato Dumaresq how was your trip? do share 😊
How was the trip bro?
I wanna know too!
Renato Dumaresq how do you guys take your bike overseas?
I'm 52, quite the corporate world and needed to see this. Grateful. 🙏
The most meaningful comment I have seen in years on TH-cam. It's great you have such thoughts about life.
Oohmmn
How did you support yourself on that journey?
That's a lie, money is not everything but gives you options
How many miles did you do cycling brother. How did you plan, practice & daily schedule. Pls guide me.
@@skyp6051 just get on your bike, ride around 30-50km a day and then after few months you will know your limits and thats when you should start planning
I hope the right people find this video. It is life changing!
Holy Sh*t!!!---You're the guy who biked the steepest road in the world in New Zealand!!! TH-cam can actually be a small world sometimes...
He is indeed... except, we have a steeper hill here in Swansea called 'Constitution Hill', it forms the last leg of the British Cycling Tour, check it out it's a killer!
Imran - World Cyclist i
Imran - World Cyclist
Imran - World Cyclist how can I move my bike to another country like overseas?
I have seen thousands of video like this, but amazing thing about this video is, the words you spoke about life and brain just got penetrated in my mind.
Today i know what is life and where i have to go.
God bless you
Great!
Inspiring video - not because it's edited with grand cinematography and motivational music, but simply because it has a wise message that speaks truth. God Bless
Just finished a bike trip through Japan and I'm already itching to get back out on the road again!
Booked my flight to Canada in July and I'm hoping to cycle all the way down to Argentina! Can't wait!
I fired my boss, after watching this video 😎
YOU GO! 🎉
Organic Trend TV
Lmao You just got fired.
Boss fired you not you.
Literally tears in my eyes..
We are missing all this..
I showed this video to my boss, sadly I'm boss now
Underrated reply! :D
haha yes boss baby
😝
😂😂
Hahaha
Great!
I almost start crying while watching this fu....g beautiful video with my kids in front of me.
Enjoy!
Do your own thing
you hit the point bro
@@ibrahimhakimi4097 What point?... that the most successful people today and in our history lives by a routine.
Even Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad lived by a routine.
i respect your opinion
A.I. The point is to break out off your comfort zone and constantly push yourself
This guy is right time flies in a blink of an eye and we need to live our lives doing what we want to do
I've been thinking of doing this for a while now. Awesome!
Tony Childress But it so sick!
Tony Childress how are planning on crossing the border ?
just start riding and see how enjoyable.
This guy just said something amazing...solved a question I had..thanks
Never in life something has made so much sense to me. Its been 4 years and I still keep going back to this video!
congratulation for real
Just a posh guy from surrey on a gap year
Thelo lmfao
Learn how to save money and spend it in a smart way is the key.
Volviste?
One of the best decision. Only a brave heart can make. All the best for your journey.
That was fucking beautiful. I almost teared up at how beautiful his mindset is and how shit mine is compared.
I'm sure that yours is not "shit". Keep loving yourself and life will be great. I'm 60 now, wife and kids and I bike a lot, but want to retire and do something like this before I'm too old.
stop shiting in your brain cavity then
Angela Leung some people are blessed with a continuously positive attitude, and some struggle to be positive in the same situations.
This is the typical capitalist mindset. When you adopt another mindset, you'll learn why not everything "costs money". :]
great truth being shown!!, love it!
Don't waste a single breath on things u don't enjoy, life's to short and you've got only one!
This makes me so happy everytime I see it!
I'm crying right now , this was so beautiful
his book To Wake the Sleeping Self is a must-read
The book is To Shake the Sleeping Self. (not Wake)
This is so true, when I worked in an office months would pass by without me even noticing. I have been travelling for the past 4 months now and I am so much more aware of time spent and enjoyed, not looking forward to the weekend, looking forward to everyday.
and 4 months of travel feels like a year or more! I have been doing so many things.
This is so beautiful. I daydream about this life all the time.
Hey Jed I'm reading the book and truly enjoying it. Back in the 70's I enjoyed your dad's books as well.
I love you man, I'm crying inside now because I can't do what you have done.... but i always wanted to.
So make planing bro).
Wow, thank you! It kind of happened to me: I missed/wasted my thirties kind of. And now, I am sooooo motivated to make the next 10 to 15 years count!!!
This is why I love cycling so much.
Everyone living in a free country should watch this video. Very powerful message.
I love your perspective...how I feel when I ride my motorcycle
That’s just the best video on TH-cam right now.
Good luck for your adventure, and maybe you’ll also discover the adventure hidden in routine one day.
All the best to you
What an inspirational video...on how to live totally for yourself.
Someone once asked, "Why is it that we spend all our health trying to gain wealth, only to later end up spending all our wealth trying to claw back our health?"
gem_k that was a gem of the comment.
gem_k my goodness!
Now I know what all the buzz is about. it changes you.
gem_k A routine is only negative if you don't love what you do. If you're smart, a routine is power.
Life is short.
Go and do the things that will make u happy.
While we can see
While we can talk
While we can walk
While we can do it...
This video is the shortest but the most motivational vid Ived watch..
When we die nothing is important anymore...but at least we experienced what we want n no regrets...
When you go journey make sure u have the filmmaker best friend.
My favorite video over here. Then, now - and forever. So inspiring ...
Grateful? Of Course. Guilty? No.
True words, Andre. Wondering where these guys are from!!
I retired early so that I can enjoy life, and I’m loving every minute!
Edward Wojciechowski Congrats 🎉
