- Henry VIII is remembered today for being the 6 wifed Tudor Monarch who orchestrated the execution’s of two of his wife’s. He is known for being a brutal man, and someone who would get whatever he wanted. Not many people dared to cross Henry, and he was a King who also had a number of mistresses. The most high profile mistress he had was Mary Boleyn, the sister of the woman who would become his second wife. But if the King wanted to sleep with a woman at his court, the husband of the woman would have little say in this, and the expectation was that the woman would be sent to Henry VIII’s bedchamber in the evening. Very few ladies rejected this idea, and were encouraged to sleep with the Tudor king to advance their families and standing at court. But the King did have a number of illegitimate children, but there is one which today is very forgotten about, and very little is documented about her life and also her fate. But who was Ethelreda Malte, the reported illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII.

The reason he didn’t most likely acknowledge her was because she was female the only reason he legitimized Fitzroy because he was so in fear of not having a male heir

Just when I thought 💭 I knew all about the Tudors, this channel offers something, or someone, that completely throws me--in this case, Ethelreda. This is the 1️⃣st I've heard of her, and, of course, I want to know more, if possible. Is there any more information on Ethelreda❓️

It was never the case (and still is not) that the English Monarchy ever practiced true Christianity. Those with great power usually serve the other master..... This is why and how the colonies became populated in America......with those who were true Christians, who were persecuted in England because of it, and sought to worship God in spirit and in truth. This impulse is dying out now in the USA, and this is the reason that we are at the end of the age, and the USA will be no more. In fact, the world will be no more. Jesus will take his own with him soon, and then the Tribulation begins, as preparation for the Kingdom of the one and only true King and Priest (the order of Melchisedec) Jesus Christ. The speed with which Ethelreda’s husband remarried makes me wonder if he killed her, you never know.
As marriages within wealthy families were usually arranged for status, connections and wealth, most of them were not love matches, but were made to protect assets for the children. There were so few marriages of affection within the upper classes that the few we know of are generally noted in histories, as they could come with penalties from the extended families involved, or even the Crown itself. While Ethelreda's husband may have been fond of her, he may have had a small window of opportunity to connect himself and his wealth to another family, and so made an offer as quickly as possible. A newly-made widow with property, or a daughter with a handsome dowry and several suitors became a business deal, arranged between the men of the families for mutual benefit.
Rapid remarriage was not unusual at this time and environment.
It would be interesting to know how many relatives of Henry VIII are running around the world today. Probably tends of thousands.
probably none. The majority of people who lived in the past have no descendants today. Think about families you have heard of: Abraham and Mary Lincoln, four children, nobody alive today (the last descendant died in 1985) . Ma & Pa Ingalls of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, had five children, nobody alive today.(last descendant died in 1968).
It fell to me to sort through a whole lot of my late mother in law's paraphernalia and there were boxes and boxes of photographs which had been passed down to her as other family members died. I had to decide what to do with them but it turned out to be easy: if they had no descendants, I threw the photos out.
If you visit antique stores you will find lots of picture frames and albums full of photos, of people who have no descendants.
We are all descended from a remarkably small number of ancestors.
@@abeal49 and Henry VIII was not all that fertile as monarchs go. He had several children by Cath of Aragon but then later on he only produced 2 by his later wives.

In my own family, our parents had five kids between 1946 and 1961. You might think we should all be grandparents by now, but only two of us are. My parents, who had 5 kids, have only 6 great-grandchildren.

Just finding this video! I discovered recently that Ethelreda is one of my 14th great grandmothers. So I’m glad to have found more info on her! 😊
Since Henry did his best to destroy his children's lives, Ethereda would be the luck one, if she was his daughter.
He did everything he could to have Edward and he treasured him as his beloved son and heir. He never knew his father’s displeasure. Fitzroy wasn’t planned, but was very much loved and favored by his father. He was showered with titles, wealth and affection. The only child that bore the full brunt of his wrath and abuse, and was old enough to comprehend what was going on, was Mary. Elizabeth was neglected, but never suffered like Mary did. Despite who her mother was, he did not treat her as cruelly as he did Mary.
@@carinafourie9119 Think again. He murdered her mother as she was at a very tender age of 3. From then on she must pay for her mothers execution and "funeral". She got not enough alimentation than she had not enough care to get proper dresses during her growth. Her caretaker as her only trust person was changed at the same time by a foreign person. The first 4 years in life are the most important.
Mary`s mother died when Mary was 20. And was not murdered.
She did not lost their only caretaker/trustperson and she got proper alimentation through her relatives. She never had to suffer physical negligence.
She was 11 yo as the divorce of her parents became a topic, not 3. Mary had a big support group, Elizabeth as the Bastard had none during her childhood, she was left all alone.
Elizabeth was subject of a kind of abuse through her stepfather Tom Seymour which almost led to her execution during her adolescent phase.
Mary had not to suffer this kind of abuse. Mary was never imprisoned in the tower as she did with her younger sister later.
So please tell me who suffered more bloody Mary or Elizabeth.
@@carinafourie9119 Elizabeth was also put in the Tower, just as her mother was, and had to face her greatest fears of death in her teenage years. Would history repeat itself? All of this molded her into the formidable ruler she eventually became. And why she never married, as well. This whole situation was underscored by the established Catholic faith being challenged by Protestantism, which lent a feeling of uncertainty throughout her life. Even though I do not think she practiced true Christianity ( she used astrologers, etc.), I do feel she was used by God to provide the seeds necessary for the eventual promulgation of Christianity throughout the world. A faith that focuses on Jesus Christ, and not on Mary, through false pagan Roman Catholicism.
I would LOVE to know more of his illigitimate children. Im sure David Starkey would know more, I wonder why he hasnt done episodes dedicated to them.
Because the only illegitimate child Henry had was Henry Fitzroy. All the rest that people put forward are without real evidence.
All the Kings were pretty much the last word. King Henry VIII was desperate for a legitimate son to carry on the monarchy and stabilize the crown.

William & Mary were married in 1520.
Catherine was born in 1522-1524
it’s fairly agreed upon that Henry began his affair with Mary around 1525.
Henry was born in March of 1526.
By May of 1527 Henry VIII is pursuing Anne.
William died in June 1528.
It’s possible that Catherine Carey was daughter of Henry. she was born before the affair is documented to have begun. But, not everything was documented. If she was born closer to 1524 & the affair started a before 1525, sure. But, as is the case with her brother, Mary would have been sleeping with William too. Having sex outside the marriage doesn’t mean it’s not your spouse’s kid.
The timing is better for Henry Carey but I doubt he was Henry’s.
It would be a decade before Edward’s birth. Fitzroy would have been 7 when Henry Carey was born. I honestly believe that if he believed Carey was his son, he’d have acknowledged him & groomed him for all the titles & power coming his way.
There was no reason not to. Especially after William’s death (when Henry became Anne’s ward).
It would have benefited the Boleyn family. Mary didn’t have some pure reputation to protect (predating Henry & William), and Henry wanted a son. I think he’d have claim him if he thought he was the father.
There’s nothing unusual about nobility naming their children after the monarch in hopes of gaining favor & under Henry VIII they often did.
He was as generous as he was brutal, & he showered his favorites with money & titles. Not just those who he was suspected of sleeping with or fathering. Pretty much anyone he liked benefited financially & socially.
I don’t think either Carey children belonged to Henry but they benefited from his relationships to the family.
There’s even less evidence that Ethelreda Malte was Henry’s daughter.

It is too bad that any of these children being his cannot be proven by DNA testing. Mary Boleyn is my 13th Great Grandmother. It would be wonderful to know if her daughter Catherine Carey-Knolly's was Henry VIII's daughter. He never claimed her or Mary's son but we know Mary was a mistress of his.
There is much evidence to support that she was indeed his daughter. From another descendant of Mary Boleyn and Henry Tudor. And, I believe that Catherine Carey was a full on Bible believing Christian, and most likely received that from her mother. And so, I would say that I am grateful to have her as a progenitor. From Henry, I am not so sure.

I sincerely believe that when Henry VIII had a horse riding accident where he fell on his head and was knocked unconscious for several hours-- well, after that accident Henry’s temperament was drastically different. I think that accident changed Henry. Not for the better.

Fascinating speculation, but I’m disappointed that there are no sources quoted for these assertions. Like many other people commenting, this is not a name I had previously encountered, as a potential Tudor by-blow, despite living near St Catherine’s Court for nearly twenty five years.
I wouldn't doubt it if he has other illegitimate children. Lots of unknown royals could be walking around today.

The reason for this prejudice is that women can carry an off spring, could be anybody if she has sex with someone within the same time frame. Or while her husband was away. Men got scared and didn’t want to raise a child that isn’t their own.

Mary bolenyn was Anne sister who he use to date. That's why elizabeth was deemed "illegitimate." Mary was "illegitimate" because Catherine widowed his brother.
Mary Boleyn was an acknowledged mistress of Henry the 8th and sister to his second wife Anne Boleyn. The mention of the fact that it is believed the Henry fathered, but did not acknowledge Mary Boleyn’s children, is just another weird fact.
It reads: ‘the sister of his second wife’. It is correct.
Mary Boleyn was Anne’s sister not Henry’s wife.
Anne Boleyn was Henry’s second wife she was beheaded because she was accused of sleeping around and Elizabeth the 1st was seen as illegitimate because of Anne plus Elizabeth wasn’t a boy.
That’s why Mary Stewart Elizabeth’s cousin had the strongest claim to the English throne because of her grandmother Margaret Tudor who was the oldest daughter of Henry 7th and Elizabeth of York.
Elizabeth the 1st was one of the strongest monarchs that was ever made. It was Elizabeth who created the golden age and ruled for 45 years alone.
I don't buy any of this. Henry VIII went to such extraordinary measures to produce living progeny, and as king he could acknowledge and legitimize anybody he wanted, it makes no sense to say he had kids he never acknowledged.

@@RissaFirecat he was the King. Both Mary and Elizabeth were declared illegitimate and then legitimate again. He could do that with any of his offspring once he separated from the Church of Rome. Then when his son Edward became king, the new king declared them illegitimate again. he was persuaded to designate Lady Jane Grey as his heir instead of his older half-sisters Their status as illegitimate lasted until Edward VI died, and then Mary I took over and declared herself to be the legitimate heir, and because she was the monarch, she could do that.
Hope springs eternal. The old fool always thought he would father a son til the last wife probably and wouldn't want any bastard at some point putting forth a claim. He knew how the Tudors made their original claim but now history says they became monarchs thru right of conquest--make up your mind history. A lot of very vague information. Henry likely had illegitimate offspring scattered around all over who will never be known about. Possibly modern DNA information might reveal some more Tudor descendants.
