  • I did a few quick outings this past weekend on public land. My main goal is to get a feel for the habitat situation and crop harvest progress, as well as ease Sage back in to another season. I was pleased with what we found and cannot wait until the season is in full swing!

    Thanks a bunch for posting this video! This makes the 791 mile trip to SD a little more tolerable. Just knowing what awaits when we hit the ground! I am amazed at how well the pheasants did considering the brutal winter! Nothing like bagging that first rooster out on the plains for SD! Born and raised in SD....currently an exile in Indiana!!

    Great video, Lookiss. The video from OUR opening day should be uploaded today or tomorrow, & you'll be able to see for yourself whether Ace & I found any pheasants. 😉 Even if we didn't, it was fantastic to be out there actually after them. Pictures, videos, & discussion are great ways to pass the off-season, but they pale in comparison to the real thing. Our best to you & Sage, the roody machine!

    I enjoy your videos immensely! I hunt just across the border... here are a couple thoughts; 1) last winter was brutal, yet when we were driving back and forth to ice fish Big Stone there were pheasants everywhere. They seemed to survive the winter well enough and nesting conditions were excellent. So far, I am seeing more birds than last year so here's to a great season! 2) I have concluded the difference in waterfowl, deer, and pheasant hunting comes down adrenaline. With waterfowl you get a little shot of adrenaline every time ducks fly within range. With deer hunting you get a little shot of adrenaline whenever you see (or hear) deer and a big jolt when you know you want to shoot. But with pheasant hunting, there is a continuous light rush that starts as soon as you hit the field and never subsides. When the dog gets birdy, that adrenaline flow escalates and a big jolt comes on the flush. I swear pheasant hunting is an addiction to adrenaline.

    • @jcwoutdoors
      @jcwoutdoors  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! You hit the nail on the head. On the resident opener, I was quickly reminded when Sage got birdy what that adrenaline rush actually feels like. Something that cannot be duplicated! Best wishes on a safe and successful season!

    You should do a how-to video for novice hunters. I feel like if you don't have a group that can teach you, there are not a lot of resources available to the novice hunter. There are tons of action videos. I went to SD last year for the first time and got my butt kicked (3 birds in 4 days). I'm headed over there again in 3 weeks to try again.

    • @jcwoutdoors
      @jcwoutdoors  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is a good suggestion. I'll try to put something together, or at least explain what I'm doing a little bit more. The best advice I can give is follow your dog, work edges/transition habitat, i.e., where cattails turn into lighter grass, where crops bump up against grass, low lying areas with thicker vegetation, etc. Fields that have had the corn harvested right next to public land is typically ideal. If you're not finding birds in a certain area, pack up and drive 25-30 miles or so and try some different spots. Right now, with so much vegetation and crops still in the fields, pheasants are often not going on to public land until later in the day. I usually don't head out to go hunting until 3pm or so, focusing on catching pheasants as they come back to public land to roost for the evening. Anyway, I'll see what I can do!

    I recently found you and like your approach to pheasant hunting and making these videos. I know you use a 12 gauge and you start the season with #5 shot switching to #4 later in season. I was just wondering if you talk at all about what choke you use? I wasn't looking for brand name just whether you start season with improved or modified and whether you switch later in the year. If you go thru this in an earlier video just let me know which one. Also wondering if you plan on getting a pup or already have one. Thanks for the vids.
