    The name Skagenröra has a kind of a funny back story. The Swedish chef Tore Wretman was out sailing with buddies, and improvised a snack by putting mayonnaise and shrimp on toast. When he served it, one of them asked "What is this"? At the time they were close enough to land to see it, and it happened to be Skagen, the northernmost tip of Denmark. So he said it was called Toast Skagen. And that was how Skagenröra, the Swedish name for it, came about.

  • @Zeelian
    @Zeelian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    Kaviar is best eaten on top of a Leksand knäcke or a toasted råg/vetekaka (a soft bread) sandwich with butter and sliced boiled egg.
    Skagenröra is a bit of a gamble in the store, some can be really bad, much better to make your own with like 50/50 good mayo and cremefraishe as the base.
    If you are going to have meatballs with potatoes you need to serve them with a sauce like gräddsås (cream sauce), svampsås (mushroom sauce) or brunsås (brown sauce) or it gets really dry.

    I got the feeling your brother was struggling with non sweet tastes in that challenge, like the caviar and the skagen. When he got to the lingonberry that seemed to be his language, and it would make sense because food in general in the States is very sweet due to high fructose corn syrup being added to nearly everything (including things that you really wouldn't think needed to have a sweet taste at all).

      Yeah, and Americans also use their fork a bit like a spoon, with that side up , while Swedes use it with the other side up (10:57-11:00). They also use it as a "spork" and cut things with, like the potatoes. Perhaps it could be an idea for the next video, trying to eat with a knife and fork like a Swede. If you plan to hang out in areas like Östermalm and Täby and such, it´s probably a good skill to learn. You don´t always have to use it, but it could be nice to be able to if you´re invited to some nicer party or a wedding or similar.

I don't like when the dish is not complete. Like tasting "sill" without gräddfil, gräslök and potatoes. Or meatballs without gräddsås or brunsås, also not homemade meatballs. Or when ppl take surströmming straight from the container with nothing else on it. You get my point. But as I said before. This one is probably the best trying swedish food I've seen so far.

    Homemade meatballs with mashed potatoes without sauce and preserved uncooked lingonberry is the best. A little Kalles kaviar on hardbread (knäckebröd) and sliced hardboiled eggs is okay. Homemade skagenröra with creme fraiche, mayonnaise and shrimps, dill, lemon, and herbes is the real deal. In Sweden you can find Toast Skagen everywhere. Really nice. Fish/seafood is better than meat. Pickled herring is very healthy food and you can do your own with your own taste.

    So the reason why there's a lot of seafood here in Sweden (and in Norway, Denmark and Finland) is because of the coastlines. A large amount of countries are bordering to the sea, which means that we have a fresh supply of seafood all year around. Compared to the states, where instead most of the inner area is landlocked, there's a greater dependency upon protein from regular ol' land animals. I myself grew up in a small town in the middle of Sweden (also somewhat landlocked) where we didn't really have a supply of seafood, so I never had a chance to grow to love seafood in the same way as the people in Stockholm or Gothenburg, for example - I completely understand why it feels weird with the Swedish style of diet.

    If you ever go to the other scandinavian countries, lets say Norway, you should try brunost - basically "Brown cheese", that is also something with a special taste 😅

    You should try kaviar on an egg, or an egg sandwich. Also, try Klädesholmens kaviar.

    You should try smörgåstårta. I used to hate it before but I don’t know how I feel about it now as an adult because I always get so grossed out about it when I see it nowadays.

    Swedes who call shrimp salad (räksallad) Skagenröra should lose the right to call themselves swedes, there's a huge difference. Either way awesome video as usual Stefan, I really love your open minded approach to new things and life in general and honestly you're already more Swedish than many people I know, happy to have you here and I hope you'll stay for a long time. Big love

    Fun to watch, and so sweet of Stefan's brother to be polite when tasting all the food!
    But the comments the swedish guy made towards him were a bit childish/douchy at times.
