Thanks for watching. Let me know what you think of the Harley oil cooler on the M8 engine. Should it already come with a protective screen? More videos like this here: th-cam.com/play/PLmgCmljtdCzWMExyPXgSeeJZYwOA1Ocj7.html
Harley actually makes one now, mounted one on my 21 RG., black body with chrome grill. Also comes totally chrome (to gaudy for my taste). Given the venerability of the oil cooler you would think it would come stock.
Great idea, Billet Craft Designs makes a killer machined oil cooler guard for the softails, I’ve been running one on my sportglide and love it! Highly recommend.
Genius! I've wondered about protecting the oil cooler on my Sport Glide... and now I know how! The free template is excellent; I'm off to the hardware for mesh and spray black. Most appreciated.
Another great vid Alf! This was my first mod after purchase last summer. I used essentially the same mesh and found that it is held in place snugly after the frame is reinstalled, so no glue was required. No glue also facilitates quick future replacement of the mesh should it be necessary. Anyone doing this mod might want to try a test fit first before the glue step. P.S. my Revelator Alf T-shirt did finally arrive, thank you! It is being worn with pride :-)
Well done Alf for addressing this! It is indeed an issue when trying to clean it and right behind the tire ready to absorb everything the wheel spins on it!
Hi Alf, I got my heritage back yesterday after many weeks waiting for a new regulator. repaired under warranty, well I set about the job I've got both oil cooler and the regulator done looks ok, thanks for the tip. keep the videos coming.
I was hunting for a mesh and found one for $20 bucks that'll make two up...from Autobarn..its the same material used on Factory Rad guard which costs $180 here.. I went with the Alloy accent to match couple of the chrome bits on the Barracuda Silver ..it looks as good as factory...Some people use security screen which cuts down cooling efficiency greatly and risks overheating.
Another good video Alf on the look out for some mesh to protect my oil cooler now, it is very open to damage where it sits and really should have been addressed by Harley we do not all live in sunny climes .
Yes definitely on my to do list. I'm actually going to be buying an aftermarket grill, cheap from e bay. It has a grill already attached, however I'm also going to add a fan to push air at lower speeds, the fan will obviously still rotate at speed also, while not running, but I think it will also give it a little added protection, heres hopeing. The original plate I'll actually place some mesh in it, SO!, if all else fails, I'll go back to that. Cheers Alf.
Hello. Great idea, great solution! congratulations. Following your directions I added the fog lights, thank you. Small question. You said fine net but not too much ... what network did you use? hole size? thank you. Davide from Italy
nice job! One question, does this softail engines get very hot? is it bad for rider legs? I live in Madrid and gets very very hot in the summer. I love this bikes but I am concerned about heat prior to buying one. thanks and regards
I bought a mesh with 4.5 mm holes which I think should work well, BUT, its a woven mesh and very time consuming and hard to cut because it stretches and twists I think when glued in place it will be OK
I just looked at my low mount oil cooler (2015 RK ) it’s all dented up and clogged with dirt. Cleaned and straighten the fins best I could. Searched for a guard but no luck for twin cam. They have some nice ones for 2017 up touring. I’m thinking about buying a new oil cooler but hesitant unless I can find a guard
Thanks for the video. Where did you get the mesh? I've looked at B&Q but they don't have anything, also.. I can't find the template on your website, is it still there?
Great video Alf, for the mesh over the grill i was thinking about using Window Screen Mesh. Slightly oversize the screen and fold the edges around the border frame for a snug fit. Thoughts?
Alf, some form of oil cooler protection is very necessary on the SG, but I would be interested in a follow up video at some point on whether your Harley runs hotter with the mesh fairing in place. The oil cooler is quite small, and the way that the oil system loop works in the M8 engine means that it runs very hot. Reducing any airflow to the oil cooler could have an effect on oil temperature. I have a similar protection issue on the radiator of my BMW, but I was informed by BMW that if I put anything on the radiator I would invidate the warranty. Turns out the design of the radiator is border line in providing the cooling the engine needs, and any reduction in air flow to the radiator could potentially lead to engine damage. I know yours is not a BMW channel!, but there could be a similar issue on my Harley SG oil cooler, particularly riding in warmer temperatures. This is the reason I have not covered mine, and perhaps this is why Harley don’t sell a guard cover?. Anyway, a chat with a Harley dealer would not hurt!.
Well actually it is merely a guard and also needs to be kept clean but there is also space on the side to let air flow through. Yes if it get totally blocked it will affect cooling but that would be the same if it wasn’t there and the oil cooler got totally blocked too. Cheers

Ah great. Phew. Yes the glue is a bit over the top but helps to prevent future rattles possibly. Cheers
Thanks Alf, great tip, cheers

Thanks so much. Yep it works quite well. Cheers
Great solution for the oil cooler. Next project for the weekend. Thanks

Yes absolutely so. Big oversight for me, along with the rear fender gap. Cheers
Thanks Alf it's a great idea soon as I get back from my ride away I will be doing the same thing.
Ride Free from New Zealand
Cheers, yep it works great I must say.

Thanks Aaron. Be good to know how your grill and fan work out too. Cheers
What grade mesh did you use on this Alf?
Hello. Great idea, great solution! congratulations.
Following your directions I added the fog lights, thank you.
Small question.
You said fine net but not too much ...
what network did you use? hole size? thank you.
Davide from Italy
Hi Davide. It is really up to you but as long as the holes as not too small that still allow airflow through
Wow that's a fantastic idea !!! Keep the videos coming an your the best 👉🏆👍
Ah thanks so much. Glad it helps. Cheers
nice job! One question, does this softail engines get very hot? is it bad for rider legs? I live in Madrid and gets very very hot in the summer. I love this bikes but I am concerned about heat prior to buying one. thanks and regards
I wouldn't say too hot. Best thing is to go try one cheers
cheap and very usefull solution thanks for the share !
Cheers

OK that's an interesting take
this is brilliant! Well done brother :)
Thank you! Cheers!

Is there a way to make one in the meantime. Would work out a lot cheaper and will be just as effective? Cheers
RA nice tutorial. I've been considering this for some time now. Definitely on my list of mods. Take care.
Thanks so much. Yes it’s well worth it. Cheers
Thanks for the video.
Where did you get the mesh? I've looked at B&Q but they don't have anything, also.. I can't find the template on your website, is it still there?
Yes it’s still there under h-d m8. Not sure where else would have it but that’s where I got it from
excellent tip. keep them coming.
Thanks so much. Certainly will try

Who needs Blue Peter when you got Revelator Alf.

On my opinion much better to get front mudguards .
Do you mean a mudguard/fender extender?
@@RevelatorAlf yes
Will doing that void your warranty I know how harley is.i want to do this to my sport glide
Not at all as it’s is just a screen
Where is the template link?
On the website Harley Parley page
Hi at 9:51 you can not see the grill because of either the camra or light just saying greets .
Yep sorry about that. Cheers
@@RevelatorAlf No worry,s dude the idea of course is great.
