No one is like Art Pepper. It is always a harmony of refined beauty.
I can’t explain it..but I know it when I hear it….. the pure essence of pure jazz.
I had the pleasure of playing a wedding gig with Art. After the wedding ceremonies were over, the entire wedding party and guests, took their
chairs and placed them on the dance floor, sat down and listened to Art, as if it were a concert, ( to me it was ). Also on the gig was drummer
Lou Malin. In the late fifties, early sixties, Art used to work a joint in San Pedro, Ca., I believe was called the Spot. Thank you Art, for your
incredible gift.
Possibly the greatest ballad player jazz had. Art was not afraid of playing those smears and slurs that can't be put on music notation but a seasoned listener understands. My favorite alto player. Jackie Mack 2nd.
Nobody but nobody ever played " body and soul" like Art Pepper.
Never been and never will be a saxophonist like it! Play on forever Art! His name says everything....:-)
I also commend author Michael Connolly in acknowledging the gifts of Art Pepper in the development of his character Harry Bosch. Art’s artistry is an integral part of Amazon’s detective series Bosch.
I'll look into Michael Connolly. Thanks for that!
@@janiceblacburn9793 Your welcome! Also, Connolly's books in the Harry Bosch series are splendid detective stories. The first book I read in the series was Angel's Flight. This is a fine police procedural with an explosive conclusion.
Art Pepper has put himself totally out there. This is the very definition of honesty.
Such range and tonal quality, as from a God.
Sweet Music movies and stories outlive us all. And whilst there is breath in the body this Art Pepper jazz sooths one's being. Here's to life. :D
Art Pepper on slow ballads was a master. he never played one the same way twice. The only guy i’d listen to every version of “over the rainbow” by.
couldn't be better explained... "Over the rainbow" is so trite, and yet it becomes beautiful melodic material in Art's hands, heart and whatever it takes to play this way.
Crazy to think that just 6 months after this was released Art passed away. I remember all the time at his home with Laurie, night clubs in the LA area and his funeral like it was yesterday. That was a sad day....
He plays like life is, just great!
commovente, Art Pepper, un poeta...
Art played this song beautifully man.
His sound goes directly into my soul
I had the good fortune to see Art and then to meet George Cables , c. 1984. This is lovely to hurtful, for any individual can relate to it, contemplate, regress to an absorption, because this is a test, a challenge, a wonder, for any player, any listener who hopes to resume believing in self, in art, in humanity, in anything wondrous this music inspires. Gorgeous. We do, and should love, the challenges such gifts to us offer.
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE one indispensable recorded piece of music from the 20th century. This recording. There are absolutely no words...
For sure, Mike & that's forever
ART PEPPER mon préféré au sax alto....
Great playing by the alto master - and wonderful piano solo and accompaniment from George Cables.
A poet on saxophone here

Art pepper was Such a great jazz artist🎷🎵😀🎵
Over the years there have been Many Alto/ Tenor Players. Only very few became / become magnets of deep heartfelt emotion. Art Pepper holds back just enough to extend the importance of each note as an increment of its place and to the composition. He allows his
partners the opportunity to present their talents in similar fashion. He plays at a pace lifting what he has to work with to the next level. The style he exudes belongs to him alone. Thank you for inviting us in.
Of all the Great altos Art. is my favourite. Peter B.
Unbelievably beautiful. I think alto players specifically will appreciate the complexity of his sound, it's genuinely hard to explain. NO other alto player conveys as much emotion as Art did. There's tiny nuanced lilts, slurs, stutters...and it goes way beyond 'technique', it's just pure expression. Just incredible.
Beautiful playing by Art, and also by George Cables!
Always loved Art Pepper's interpretations of Ballads and his swing on up-tempo music arrangements. One of our best jazz soloists.
Art was always the sincerest musician and such a wonderful inspiration and showing us how we should all try to express ourselves when we play his playing lives in my life Nigel Nash in Britain
The great danish artist painter Asger Jorn once said :" If you don't go to the extreme , you won't go anywhere."
I looked it up in my diarie. There's no need to go anyehere.
You realise ,how ignorant most of us are when you discover something so exquiste has been out there and you had not discovered it earlier. Great album
Totally agree
I always thought Lee Konetz & John Coltrane were the best but now? Art convinced He's at their level....
@@samdordoni165 Listen to Zoot Sims plays Johnny Mandel “ Emily” for stunning lyricism ! They all have their own showpieces 🎷🎷🎷
Yes, same here, but some people will never discover, so lucky us!
Very special player.
the book about him straight life is heart wrenching.. this recording is like so much of his work brilliant and under-recognized
Hi Christopher - I guess another man's meat is another man's poison!..I love Peppers playing but after reading the book I couldn't listen to him for about 3 months, it really got under my skin!..I wondered how he could write such a beautiful piece namely "Diane" and yet hate her with such a passion!
A tortuet soul in a great musician.
I can't give it to anyone else. No other saxophonist has ever been such an inspiration. So heart felt. You could say it about anything in life but certainly on the alto: What else is there?
Michael Cobb agreed. I love Art - I guess Paul Desmond too for tone giants (of course Stitt, Parker as well). But Art will cut you to the bone.
Bird is the word Folks!
@@lastknowngood0 yeah , but pretty dated now !
I was on a Carnegie Hall line waiting for an Art Pepper ticket , and got it only after the box office guy assumed I wanted one for Vladimir Horowitz. But the concert turned out differently because Art had just died and Sonny Stitt came on instead. Also this Body and Soul is beautiful and a match for Dexter Gordon's version at the Village Vanguard.
Great Williams solo, Bert goodtaste
Have I died and gone to nirvana. Better yet, I'm listening to Art Pepper.
wow I'm sure o will learn from this man it's the only way forward
It's here for you, for just the taking!
The master of ballads.
Wow...! Just Wow...!
Que grande! Art.Pepper
supremo, cuerpo y alma en sintonia. graciar art.
gorgeous
How to sound totally unlike Coleman Hawkins........a previously impossible task for sax players but achieved here by Pepper.
Så mycket vackert!
Such a sweet rendition of this lovely song with lyrics that come straight from the soul. Yours, for the taking ~ All, are you ready?
wonderful
so beautiful
I feel ……This is almost Pepper ’s “ SWAN SONG ” ! The Top of Jazz Giants , I think .
fantastico. honestidad pura
Alta sensibilidade técnica inspiração e improviso, salve Pepper um dos grandees do Alto!
Deliciosamente tranquilizador ...
Lindo e festivo domingo Ruka!!
Beijos,
Araci.
I thank Mike Connelly for the introduction.
Fabulous!
We've seen the best, bring on the rest Ru Bop Shabam.
He plays to your soul
Superlative, lyrical, passionate .. one of the True Saxophone Greats.. Hall of Famer.. Like Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker & others..
🍀👍🏻🎶🎶🙏🏼🎷🎵🎶
Genius
listen at what he does between 10:50 and 11:25 ... to me this has an equal in rythmic and harmonic beauty only in Strode rode played by Sonny Rollins...
Why is he so underrated?
No doubt!
He had personal problems which made him difficult to promote & make money out of him. That's why the public don't know. We hear him, we know. He expressed IDEAS. He was an individual while the rest of us wiggle our fingers trying to sound like Bird to impress people. The sincerity of Art Pepper = a Music lesson...freedom to be ourselves.
@today is not yesterday Jeff Berlin made a similar point years ago and he was called a racist for it. But they don't mention Miles Davis' quote about choking a white man.
@today is not yesterday exactly... he is a recognized talent by all musicians
@@ralph0149 what's the quote ?
Lovely ballad piece! But not in my library collection!

Che bravo! Sentimenti di nostalgia. Ma dove sono finiti i musicisti come Art Pepper?
in Paradiso
Art... black man in a white skin
he has all shades of colour in his playing
