  • Built in 1922 covering 4 km2 of Mengo hill, it's the main palace of the Buganda Kingdom. Empty since 1966 when King Mutesa II, then president of Uganda, was overthrown; but still used for official receptions. The palace ground has dark past: constructed as arms depot in 1971 some chambers soon became the torture site of Idi Amin, a one-way trail for ten thousands. No one ever escaped. In each of the five chamber up to about 500 prisoners were squeezed. The lowered corridor would be flooded and electrified for torture and electrocution.
