I'm glad this is the single they put out first, because I and other Tesseract fans really feel like this has sounds from all of their albums combined. "One" is very heavy, "Altered State" is very proggy, "Polaris" is very groovy, and "Sonder" is very grand or epic sounding. And though they have a different vocalist on Altered State, Dan's vocals have been amazing from the beginning. He's only gotten better though, this is the first song where he's ever used growls. They recently did a live performance that's basically a greatest hits album called "PORTALS", check out Concealing Fate, Tourniquet, or Nocturne for a good time.
Portals is one of my favorite Tesseract releases. I love how it captures the rawness of the band somehow a little more groovy. Although Altered States is a masterpiece, I do enjoy Dan's take on the songs from that album, he has such an amazing voice! Cheers🤘
In fairly sure Dan has used growls in tesseract several times prior to this, they're just typically more subtle and background, where as in this song they take center stage.
I mentioned that exact thing to Acle the other day. This song takes elements from everything and weaves it together, although he told me it wasn't intentional.. The music just flowed.
Nice reaction, glad to hear you like this band! This song is fantastic, a good blend of new experimental style and their typical signature groove. It blew me away, honestly. And keeps getting better each listen. The vocalist Daniel Tompkins also streams live singing on Twitch (he's been doing this song live a couple of times already) under the name DMTesseract. Check it out :)
Being a TesseracT fan from when they first started, I am so f*cking stoked with this song. They've gone through a few stages of maturity with their songs, absolutely killing it along the way. This song is a culmination of all of their skills, with more to come FOR SURE. They're absolute kings of their craft and I can't wait to see what else they have coming 🙌
Not sure if you knew this either Jay Postones there drummer can’t sight read music! And he is that insane at playing drums During Covid they release a live concert dvd called “Portals” the drummer from monuments took on the role of playing on that dvd he recorded him learning the process and said that TESSERACT was the hardest drum parts he has ever done Crazy
Dan is an elite vocalist in this scene. You should take a deep dive into their discography if you dig this song, most of their songs are not this long. Personally, this is my favourite TesseracT song ever, and Ive been a fan since their first album 'One' that came out 12 years ago.
Sekiro shout out - if you never played that you've got to give that a play. Best game I've ever played. Also the entire TesseracT discography is worthwhile. I'd say start at Sonder and work backwards; Polaris, Altered State, and then One.
9:00 As far as time signatures go, this song is in 4/4 all the way through. Most of their songs are, it's kind of a modern prog thing to make 4/4 sound like something else. Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, most of their songs are in 4/4 and so are a lot of their confusing riffs. I just learned this section you're talking about on the guitar today, it's pretty amazing how at first it sounds so out of time and loopy, but when the drum changes to accentuate the 4/4 in the second half of the section, you really hear it was 4/4 all along. Amazingly fun song to play
@@davidpwolfe Well you and me both! Tesseract is a great modern prog band that has influenced a lot of other metal bands of today. Their grooves are so interesting and surgical with the rhythms I'd recommend looking into their album Altered State, regarded by most fans as their best work to date. It's clean, precise and hard hitting. Altered State features a different (but equally amazing) vocalist. Tesseract are a lucky band when it comes to incredible and unique vocalists. The 'Of Matter Suite' studio performance video is a popular one amongst yt reactors, it's a 10/10 performance. This would be the undisputed top pick if you decide to look into Altered State. The short song Calabi-Yau deserves a mention too, it has a sick Saxophone solo over djent guitars.. it's freakin awesome. If you want to hear more of this singer, check out something off the Polaris album, it's a beautiful record as well. The song Tourniquet is one of the prettiest songs I've heard, my favorite vocal performance by Dan Tompkins (current tesseract vocalist from the video you reacted to). It made my polish mom cry lol so I just have to recommend that. Have a good day dude, i enjoyed watching your video
It’s actually not quite in 4/4 all the way through. There is a 7/8 measure near the beginning and a short 13/8 section in the middle. But the vast majority is 4/4.
Which is the 13/8 section? You're likely right since the band does use some half bars of 2 quarterns notes sometimes to finish a pattern and they don't shy away from over the barline stuff. I haven't noticed the 13 section when I practised this song start to finish on the guitar? Still most, way over 90% of these bands materials are made of(heavily syncopated) 4/4 sections, and knowing that would help those less familiar with modern prog to prime their ears for the 4/4 cymbals or whatever, instead of focusing on the timefuckery guitars which I notice most non-proggers focus on and throw themselves off Edit: is it the 'give me everything nowwww' section in 13?
Great reaction, will definitely check out more of your videos! If you haven't heard it yet, I think you'll enjoy A Dream in Static by Earthside, it features Dan Tompkins, TesseracT's front man here.
The first time I listened to this I didn't make it all the way through because something came up when I was about 6 minutes in and I wasn't sure if I liked the song. When I finally had the chance to listen to it fully I was hooked. They really take you on a journey with this one and the journey feels so significant. Hard to put into words.
If your first experience with TesseracT is The War of Being....buckle up. This track is like a greatest hits of all their songs mixed flawlessly into one.
TesseracT is their own band like Tool. Postones makes it all work on the drums. He's legendary IMO.
Big facts
Man, Jay is one of the best to ever do it. TesseracT deserves more followers for sure.
Jay Postones is this generation’s Danny Carey. So groovy and technical, yet still so musical.
Hate to burst your bubble, but he doesn't write any of his parts, Acle is the genius behind the whole thing@@JoHarm96

@@dougcronkhite2113 so interesting! Although I have always considered TesseracT as being masterful songwriters, this is one of their best.
Tesseract is a great band, they r so underrated. And Dan (vocalist) is easy top 10 best modern metal vocalists. He is a beast. Thanks for reaction !
dont forget Jay, absolute legend of a drummer
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tesseract are one of the very early pioneers of this style of music. Acle (Guitarist, Founder) also used to play in Fellsilent.
Love how Tesseract and Periphery combine heavy and melodic. They always take u on a journey. Can't wait for the tour soon!
6:21 is so wild, everytime you hear it, it gets better and better. So addictive
best bit of song by far
That until about the 7:00 mark I have on repeat, so damn good!
