Leon is the best! So loved by so many! He has helped so many and I'm thankful to Elton for seeing that Leon finally got recognized! It was late comming but much deserved! I love Leon and his wonderful music. I can't wait for his kids to hit the stage in their Daddy's footsteps!
Leon Russell was one of a kind and his passing leaves a serious void in the world of music. He did however leave us with an amazing body of work to remember him by. Now he'll join The Big Band in the Sky...which seems to be recruiting new members pretty often these days. Hope to see you on the other side Leon.

Her solo stuff is a gorgeous blend of a dark country aesthetic and instrumentation with a sultry and powerful, ranging voice, and soaringly poetic lyrics. But then again, he's had 3 brain surgeries, and he always wears dark glasses cos the lights bother his eyes. I don't care, it's always an honor to be in the presence of the Master of Space and Time.

yes, he has a knack for doing that. there are so many songs that he has covered that i prefer to the originals, which is kind of confusing because i usually like original versions better, except for when Mr. Joe Cocker covers a beatles song which makes a huge improvement over the originals. Mr. Russell is one of the greatest musical artists today.

Look for videos of Sir Elton's "The One" tour in 1992, when Eric Clapton opened for Elton in front of a packed Dodger Stadium crowd that must've been 100,000 ppl. 3+ hours of music & concert gold between rock's preeminent guitarist and one of the top three songwriters ever!!!
They both play Yamaha grand pianos. The clickety-clokety one sounds like it's played by a decent boogie pianist. The other one sounds huge and lyrical and is played by one of the greatest of all times. That being said, we should be eternally grateful that Elton helped Leon in the late revival of his career.
Haha. Leon never needed anybody’s help with anything. Elton is good but compared to the breadth of Leon’s work it’s minuscule. Not dissing Elton, but come on, Leon wrote for everyone.

There's a TH-cam of Nutbush City where you can hear the influence of Leon's piano style on her piano player (whose name I don't know).
Leon uses a moniter that has the lyrics on it. It's not a critisism just a fact. I think they are both awesome and The Union is one of Elton's best albums ever.

Don't think because Leon doesn't put a lot of "english'" into his movements, that the action isn't happening at key level.They are both very talented but Leon was FIRST CALL pianist in LA during the early R&R studio era (see The Wrecking Crew).

Check her voice 45 yrs from now, as with EJ's and Leon's age, then see how it is. Hers may age much better than theirs, however, because she probably is not/will not inhale nearly the quantity of smoke they did - of any kind.

Great song, great group, but not firing on all cylinders. Leon's voice is ravaged, but although it's in a lower register than Neil Young sang the original, the way he tails off at the end of certain lines sounds more appropriate for the song's wistful nature. It would be interesting to hear Neko take the lead part, or maybe they could have flown Lucinda Williams in, for a little of her brand of world-weariness?

My guess is the stage lighting bothers his eyes, and makes it easier for him to see the teleprompter with the lyrics. Elton also often wears sunglasses on stage.

Interesting that the two ladies were in the role of "backup" vocals here. The gents get the solos. I wonder if Neko and Sheryl had time to rehearse what should have been a nicely coordinated harmony. Of everyone on that stage Neko Case is the best pure singer. Clearly She and Sheryl were not on the same page.
"Of everyone on that stage Neko Case is the best pure singer." Not so sure about that. I'm not a vocal instructor, or singer, but do know that is at least partially subjective. Check her voice 45 yrs from now, as with EJ's and Leon's age, then see how it is. Hers may age much better than theirs, however, because she probably is not/will not inhale nearly the quantity of smoke they did - of any kind.
@@josephhitt4444 Not to mention, Leon was a screamer. I saw him a lot back in the day and he had that great Rock N' Roll scream. Does a number on the vocal cords though.
Neko is the least in all departments, except volume.

He almost always wore a hat. In his young days, a top hat. So cool.
Great song, great group, but not firing on all cylinders. Leon's voice is ravaged, but although it's in a lower register than Neil Young sang the original, the way he tails off at the end of certain lines sounds more appropriate for the song's wistful nature. It would be interesting to hear Neko take the lead part, or maybe they could have flown Lucinda Williams in, for a little of her brand of world-weariness?
+diddlytube I actually thought of Lucinda Williams with Leon Russell while listening to this! I will have to do a search to see if there are any recordings of the both of them together!
