This song was supposed to be a single by The Beatles, Lennon presented the song to the other members of the band and they reject it (along with "Cold Turkey" written in 1969). Lennon said about the song that he had the idea in the breakfast time, recorded it in the lunch and it was finished in the dinner time.

Afraid you were wrong about John writing it in an afternoon. It was more impressive. John woke up with the tune in his head on 27 January 1970, had the song written in an hour, and recorded it that night, with the single hitting the shops ten days later.

When I was 14 I went to a house party full of early to mid twenties people and got wrecked. The only thing I remember was asking the person controlling the music to play this song over and over again....eventually he did. And it brought me to earth in a very satisfying way. It was at that moment I realised that I knew more than many of the older people in the room.

🎯 👁 *This is an anti-war anthem. The "Instant Karma" Lennon sings about is the instant negative consequences that will befall all those who advocate and proliferate war. They won't have to wait until the next life, their consequences will fall upon them instantly. Therefore, they need to "recognize the brother. Everyone you meet." Because "why on earth are we here? Surely, not to live in pain and fear."*
