  • (Filmed before COVID) Joe Casey joins Christ Wong (@PilotChristy) for a discussion on the Piper PA-46 airframe and variants, including the Malibu, Meridian, Mirage and the new M-600. The ins and outs of piston versus turboprop, pressurized aircraft versus unpressurized. Joe is considered a leading expert on the PA-46 airframe.

    Thanks! Years ago an aviation friend said to buy a Malibu. It'll do 205 plus knots true, is pressurized, with radar and deice, efficient and a super glider. I should have listened to them. 15 years ago, I could have gotten one for $200 plus thousand, today in Trade-a-plane the lowest cost one is $369k. 6-13-2021.

    A great episode, good insight to the model. However it would better talking about the matrix and mission associated with it, as well as discussing the pros n cons of compared aircrafts. Ideally if need or mission is accounted for , the matrix usually fits the bill. During hot summers the matrix shines in cooling the cabin much much faster while taxing in crazy florida or texas summer than a pressurized one, cz the pressurized aircraft relies heavily on the bleed air to cool the cabin so it takes longer (specific for piston engine). The matrix at 10,000 alt is perfect for a 6 pax with a range of 700 ish nm with reserve. Plus the maintenance and operating cost of the matrix is cheaper. For under 2hour leg, sub 700 nm the matrix is a better proposition for a family of 6. The turboprops are on a league of their own with better range, and service ceiling. M600 for the win with a hefty price tag.

    Clean sheet? I always thought it was a single engine with the Cheyenne cross section. I fact isn't it a common cross section with the PiperJet that wasn't?

    @cghall74 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the nice show. I am lucky enough to get to fly in a Malibu JetProp pretty often (not my plane), and can certainly vouch that they are lovely to fly. Smooth, responsive and the cabin is fantastic. My only complaint on the JetProp is that with the extra fuel to power the turbine, the useful load can be marginal.

    G, day from Sydney, Australia.
    * just looking at the six (6) piper I wonder about the C of G
    * if the wing spars are under the AD inspection for fatigue cracking?
    *the higher prices of the bigger lycombing motor.: I would be interested to know the dba volume of the engine in the cockpit and cabin.
    * could you ask the examiner his opinion on maintaining licence proficiency minimum take offs/landings and nav obligations?

    So there was one question I wanted Christi to ask that she didn't, which is, what happens when a pressurized plane reaches the end of its ability to safely be pressurized? Do you have to get rid of the airframe?

    • @一万小时
      @一万小时 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Malibu airframe is certified to 10,000 hours. Most Malibus on the market today (more than 40 years since production) haven't come close to half of that. Hard to imagine the aviation world another 40 years from now. But I've heard some folks say the certification hours can be extended. Or, they can be continually flown unpressurized (essentially becoming Matrices).
