RIP Saito Sensei. I trained under this great man in New Zealand, Australia and Japan where he guided me through my 1st dan at the Iwama dojo. I remember with great fondness raking the jinja of O Sensei, the compulsory parties and of course the training, which was hard but lighthearted. It always gave me a sense of peace and joy.
Morihiro Saito Shihan...Rest İn Peace...We love you so much...Thank you to your beautiful works and technics, still, you're living our hearts...Forever...Domo arigatou gozaimashita.
A humble man, a simple man, a true master. Ueshiba O Sensei named him "Morihiro" the guardian of Aikido. No one else was so close to the founder in his hardest post war poverty-striken moments as Saito Sensei. He took care of the founder until practically his last days with no rest. Not a bit of thanks from the Ueshiba family for Saito Sensei and his wife, on the contrary, the "Aiki corporation" called "Aikikai" which tries to turn Aikido into a trademark with their McDojos at the forefront, has tried to erase Master Saito from history with all their might, wich is a true real shame. Long life for the true Aikido and the Saito family.
True! His son Hitohira Saito made the wise choice to separate from the Aikikai and found his own association (Iwama shin shin aiki shuren kai) the Ueshiba family wanted Hitohira to no longer teach buki waza and to conform to the aikikai study program🤢
Attacking or grabbing Saito sensei was like grabbing a small house that was about to move. Part of me was always laughing at myself and I was thinking "Why am I doing this." I learned so much. Thanks sensei.
@AtmanxId M. SAITO Sensei belonged to Aikikai actually. He received his 8th Dan from O'Sensei (I don't know at what time he finally accepted the 9th Dan from the Aikikai - In 1986 he was still 8th Dan). If you like weapon practice, I would recommend you to try to met a teacher from Iwama Ryu.
I was training in Iwama under Saito Sensei in 1986. Yes there was lots of weapons training, every morning in front of O Sensei's jinja and at other times elsewhere throughout the day. I believe some dojos now insist on separate certificates for weapons proficiency for Iwama/ Takemusu style, which has since divided after the death of Saito Sensei. It's rather confusing now.
I used to train aikikai aikido but now i move to iwama aikido. I think iwama aikido techniques are difficult. There is a hanmi and there is a technique to fight someone who learn aikido. For example, if your opponent do a iriminage to you, you can do a koshinage to beat your opponent iriminage. I would rather iwama aikido than aikikai aikido.

Help me to understand martial math. If we have an attacker"s fist as point A and the point he wants to hit as point B then the shortest and therefore fastest way to hit is the straight line. Ancient greeks told me this secret. But I don't see any straight punches in aikido and thus no defences against. Could you please show me defences against simple straight kicks and punches?
@larbo1616 SAITO Sensei always repeated he teaches in O'Sensei's dojo, so he only had to teach O'Sensei technics, "other teachers are able to teach they own Aikido technics, I don't have too".

Wow! You trained with this man in various countries - I’m jealous of you, Jane.

とても懐かしい映像ですね
That was a good time to be there. Miles Kessler Sensei and Bjorn Saw Sensei practicing the Kumi-tachi in front of the Aiki-jinja.
Attacking or grabbing Saito sensei was like grabbing a small house that was about to move. Part of me was always laughing at myself and I was thinking "Why am I doing this." I learned so much. Thanks sensei.
You meant a small mouse... yes so true. I had the same feeling.
Appreciate.

@13orangecake This is really true indeed, and characteristic to Saito Sensei's classes.
@larbo1616 SAITO Sensei used the terms "Takemusu Aikido" as his teacher used to do so. Later, he also used the terms "Iwama Ryu".
I think his Aikido is very close to Ueshiba sensei. Some feeling of bu still. If some atemi even better.
1度お会いしてみたかった。

Sure. This is an excerpt from a longer reportage on kobudo. My purpose is to post the sub-titles in French, that's why I've put it here.

Done!
Thanks to Tokako San.
