Part of genius is being ahead of ones time, whether because people are unable to grasp the nature of ones art, or because they are simply unwilling to hear it. With few exceptions, those who are appreciated in their own time are the gifted who pander to convention.

Thanks! We do care. I saw Amsellem often when she was a student in the Merola Program at SF Opera in the late '90's. Outstanding voice and presence. I have memorized most of the libretto after hearing the opera many times. The best production was by Pierre Ponelle at SFO. Brilliant producer. He worked with Kurt Adler, a symbiosis of operatic genius!
That's the thing about music, about opera, about art... You don't have to speak that language to understand what is all about. And that why I love it so much. Bravo. 💛
Absolutely! When Sesame Street cribbed off Carmen with their animated short in the 70's or 80's, it was clear the story was about an orange with a rubber band for a mouth who shrieked so fiercely of love that its face literally flew off! Truly a relatable story as old as time itself, universally understandable regardless of ones native tongue.
That may be true for some orchestral works, but knowing at least the libretto enhances the experience greatly, eg. La Boheme 2 act winter scene, Buterfly aria last scene, etc. Try finding a subtitled performance and at the second third hearing u will appreciate the difference.
I had a wonderful French teacher when I was 13 or 14, and she let us listen to this wonderful opera. We analyzed the libretto, which may seem very advanced but in fact the French in Carmen isn't so difficult. Ever since then I have loved this opera. I met an old school mate who doesn't listen to classical music, but he said that he loved Carmen because of this gifted teacher. His parents never introduced him to opera. He said that he always "hums" lyrics from Carmen even though he has forgotten what they mean. I love when childhood memories really stick to you. And carmen is full of hits!

Fun fact: I’m playing this to a store full of people. At my work we’re allowed to play family-friendly music and I’ve been shuffling indie pop for the last six hours and wanted something calmer. I do like opera but, only ever listen to Tosca or La Bohème, then I was like “wait isn’t there an opera called Carmen everyone is always talking about?” And searched it. This is a good opera!
CARMEN is a musical masterpiece but hardly a "family friendly" story. Its all about illicit sex, tragic fate and violent death(and includes on-stage smoking!). However, its sung in French so everyone hums along with the wonderful music .If you want "family friendly" go to Mozart's "Magic Flute" (Die Zauberflote)- really...
I'm glad you shared this high level music with folks who probably would not listen to opera otherwise! No one needs to know the gritty plot details - it's still family friendly!

it kinda makes sens that the authors were recognized after their death. Before, the opera was canceled because Carmen was so disturbing in her role that people leaved the opera and screamed at her, even the womans were shocked by her attitude just the first second she sings. George Bizet never lived to see Carmen become world famous. He died way too young. Now the toreador song and the Habenera are featured in commercials and numerous movies such as The Bad News Bears.
Actually natives understand the lyrics :) French from 19th century is the same than today's one. Just like in every singt language, we don't understand from time to time because of the rythm.
Carmen is one of my favorite operas. I just stumbled on this production. Glad I did. Thanks for uploading this program so beautifully performed. Kudos to all the participants in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Magnifique production ! Très belles voix. Très belle mise en, scène. Et excellente direction d'orchestre. :-)
Eblouissante Carmen... Quelle interprétation magnifique ! Merci...
You can search and read the translation of the words so that you can better understand the action. I have listened to this opera over 30 times and continue to love the beauty of the music and the voices.
This is / was my first opera what
i have ever watched.
I really like costumes and singing and simping in start of first act.
Superbe Béatrice Uria-Monzon !

J'ai 14 et je suis indonésien. J'aime Georges Bizet aussi.
Finally someone uploaded this version with lovely Beatrice. Waited for years. Thanks so much for sharing.
I was blessed enough to take part in a production of this opera years ago. Never gonna forget the rush of opening night. What i would do to get re involved in something like this.
On s'ennuyer beaucoup à l'époque alors hein...

Love Don Jose in this number
Came for all this tremendous opera, the score is amazing, every little sketches and motifs are lyric and imaginative, perfect.
I actually came for 1:01:30
🙏 🙏 😊
thank you !! heard this opera, or rather the music, as a kid, from looney toons and other cartoons.
regardless of all the controversy in the comments, this piece deserves to be preserved for eternity.
The sad thing is, Bizet died before his opera reached full success. He never knew it would end up being performed ALL over Europe.

Come to my channel, I speak a lot about Netrebko, Verdi.. Puccini.. La Traviata.. OPERA ! :)
De très belles voix. Merci pour cette vidéo.
Sorry to hog this format but I love this opera. I played Carmen in our college production. This is the best version I've ever seen. I got to wear costumes like this wonderfully talented Carmen. Incredible memories. Mai piu.
Didn't she throw his ring at him? And why did she give him the knife? Je ne sais pas.
I wish I could understand French so that I can really enjoy this opera
Exist with English subtitles...😃

Dynamite production in every way. Great singing cast.
The best thing of this opera is, to not understand the libretto, so it always sound amazing and good, lulz.
It's good when you understand French. Amazingly excuted.
Oui Oui.
Other videos have traslations.
Spencer Ge ich keine shprachen French
It's perfect, isn't it? Amazing.
Cant understand this.
*Still watches anyway*
Watch it again-its allowed. Try to obtain a libretto or a video with sub-titles in a language you can understand.
My freshman year of high school we played pieces from this opera as our matching show and now my junior year we're playing a Christmas piece for our Christmas concert that has music from carmen
Beautiful version of Carmen!!🤩🤩
George Bizet never lived to see Carmen become world famous. He died way too young. Now the toreador song and the Habenera are featured in commercials and numerous movies such as The Bad News Bears.
Thank goodness Carmen came alive for the last bow.
NO OPERA SINGERS WERE INJURED-OR KILLED- DURING THE MAKING OF THIS PRODUCTION.,
I wish I understood French...
In fact I guess that even the French speakers can't understand all the lyrics.
Yes, indeed it is often unclear to me, as a native french..
Yes we understand it ! Nobody talks like that but we understand it ;)
Wvovano That is really classicaly sung language for you. Not even natives get it without subtitles!
Actually natives understand the lyrics :) French from 19th century is the same than today's one. Just like in every singt language, we don't understand from time to time because of the rythm.
Best opera ever for ordinary people!
Great Carmen;Every single part is a great perfection.Beautiful.
Carmen is one of my favorite operas. I just stumbled on this production. Glad I did. Thanks for uploading this program so beautifully performed. Kudos to all the participants in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
