A lot of people fail to realize how much of the late baroque/early classical repertoire was left with little ornamentation for the purpose of allowing the performer to indulge in their own interpretation of the music. 'Scarlatti didn't say pianissimo!' Yeah. And Bach didn't tell Glenn Gould to bounce around like a jackass.... But Gould gave fresh life to Bach and now Tiffany Poon has brought a new way to look at this Scarlatti sonata. Why play things the exact same way we've heard them before? I love hearing a new take on music that has been around for centuries. A score is not a sacred text. She has a lot of skill, and put some different feeling into a piece that has been recorded in the 'correct' way at least a thousand times. Hats off to you for playing with some soul, never let anyone tell you that having your own ideas for how to approach a baroque piece is WRONG... that misses the point entirely
dragonize Indeed it is- but since being introduced to Gould on his Columbia Masterworks 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations, I don’t even notice anymore. It’s just like Ms. Poon’s interpretation, which some would criticize as “romantic.” When playing is done at the very highest level, as it is here, there is no better or worse, there are only examples.
Mr or Ms. Stacks, thank you for your apt characterization of that idiot Gould, who made a fool out of the greatest baroque composers ever to grace the planet Earth!
@@herbertbielefelder341 After more than four decades of listening to and loving Classical music, including Baroque, Romantic, etc., I have at last come to realize that Scarlatti really is the greatest of them all. I truly love Mozart and Bach. But Scarlatti is in a whole other world.
@@joshlucas4269well of course any and every composer is overshadowed by Bach. Bach was a dazzling musical genius head and shoulders above anyone else and that is an understatement!
Here I go again, listening to your Scarlatti Sonata in F Minor, K.466, before I drift off to sleep, and every time I listen to this I find it even more beautiful than the last time. I can never thank you enough for sharing this beautiful piece of music with us. I'm still binge watching to catch up on the past 5 years of your vids so I can't say for sure if it's my favorite of all but I can say it is my favorite of your music for when I'm falling asleep but even that's not entirely accurate because I love all of your music so much that it's quite difficult to label a favorite.
This pianist understands Scarlatti. So a most beautiful rendition. So many performers over the last 30 years play these pieces as fast as possible. They believe that fast makes for a good interpretation. Where they get this idea from I don’t know. Thank goodness for performers like this lady.
Can we be sure that these instructions are authentic? Are they stated on original scores? Or have they been added by various publishers at a later date?
@@amandagrace6767 I gotta agree. I've been in love with F Minor for a long time. A good two years of my life were spent writing and improvising all over that key, and it is still my go-to when it's time to noodle. This is one of my 10 favorite Scarlatti sonatas, this version in particular is just beautiful and really brings it's calming, contemplative nature to life. Tiffany is a fantastic musician, no question!
Probably the most lyrical and pensive interpretation of this piece I've heard. Amazing how you can "shape" every single note even in the pianissimo. Really beautiful.
I l do like your performances! You one of the few artist, not hurrying in there performance! Most artists hurry and stress! Have a great time and congratulations for the great results of your hard study! Best regards from Sweden!
That was beautiful Tiffany! Thank you. A lot of pianists play stuff too quickly these days. But this was measured and expressive. Just what the piece needed!
Tiffany, I love everything I hear of your playing. You have such a great sense of interpretation, and one feels that you put your heart and soul into each and every note. Thank you for all the beautiful music that you bring into our lives.
Really excited to listen to a Scarlatti Sonata I’m unfamiliar with, performed with such sensitivity. Your performances always sing and tell a story! Thank you!
The more I listen to this, the more I love it. Thanks for introducing me to Scarlatti! So far this Sonata in F Minor is my favorite when I am resting because it is so soothing and relaxing. It's so beautiful... thanks again for the introduction and for playing it so beautifully.
I appreciate your performance of this very much. I have a good ear for expression and I must say that there is not one other performance of this piece by another artist that compares to yours. Performing a piece that is technically relatively simple with the degree of expression you use would make this piece much more difficult to perform. The subtle nuances you use throughout the piece adds so much more depth and expression. I really enjoy listening to you perform this piece over and over again. If you were looking for a way to touch ones soul when you perform this piece, then you have achieved it. Thank you for this performance.😉
0-0 this seemed so random to come out. It's funny because I have Scarlatti K.9 in D minor in my Amazon cart and seeing this made my day (': Beautiful interpretation and playing as always Tiffany
If Scarlatti had had access to the pianoforte he would have rendered this exquisite sonata in a not dissimilar manner. Bach too would have without loved to explore the added degrees of freedom that this instrument offers. I have read countless comments which state that Bach disliked the pianoforte, but in fact, he became an agent for Silberman in his pianoforte business. Countless virtuosos play and have played baroque on a pianoforte: Horowitz, Gould, Hewitt, Richter, etc. I practice Bach mainly on a harpsichord, and only when I am able to do this well do I switch to the pianoforte. Purists should focus on paint drying and only comment on that.
This is what I hate about truck driving: going 1-2 weeks without my piano. Feel like I’m going crazy without it 😩 So I watch other people play to prevent myself from driving off a bridge or something 😭
Every baroque pieces played by you were so sentimental and romantic-like , haha its funny that baroque pieces could be a romantic pieces sometimes , but I like it ! especially yours performance !

I love slow, romantic baroque. It brings the beauty of it out even more. The composers would have loved it.
Romantic & baroque are two different periods of music.
I know. She is playing baroque in a romantic way, and I like that.
You have inspired me to listen to more pieces of Scarlatti❤️
Scarlatti is extremely underrated. There are hundreds of piano pieces written by him, one more beautiful than the other.

Some of his sonatas must be played "as fast as possible" as the own Scarlatti indicates... but not this one, of vourse.
Can we be sure that these instructions are authentic? Are they stated on original scores? Or have they been added by various publishers at a later date?

Romantic Scarlatti.... why not?
This is my absolute FAVORITE Scarlatti sonata! Thank you so much
