  • A perfect way to greet the day... Listen to Fazıl Say's recording of the Sonata in F minor by Domenico Scarlatti, from his Morning Piano collection: w.lnk.to/sfmLY
Morning - Evening is an inspired project by the Turkish pianist, who presents curated assortments of pieces written or transcribed for piano to fit each of these temporal moods. On his selections for the morning, the pianist explains, "There have been mostly baroque and early classical works on the radio in the mornings since my childhood. I used to start the day with the beautiful melodies and rhythmic energy of baroque music. Therefore, I particularly wanted to have many music pieces from this period in the Morning Piano collection."

    - SCARLATTI, K. 466 -
    You can't see it.
    Nobody can.
    You'd never even guess.
    Nobody could
because - well, you see, the thing is ...
    I"m crying
    from the Inside Out.
What a cruel thing to do, Domenico -
To make an Old Man Cry.
It's a Lovely type of Cruelty, though -
    and so I forgive you,
    and I thank you
because - well, you see, the thing is ...
Right now - at this very Moment,
    I needed those Heavenly Tears.

This Scarlatti sonata has such emotional potential that the performer brings out, that if Scarlatti were to hear it, he would probably faint. You simply can’t have comparable dynamics on a harpsichord. I’m sure that the Wanda Landowski and GlennGould aficionados are horrified - playing Scarlatti in a modern/late romantic style! Heavens! But for the rest of us, it is sublime.

it is so unfortunate that most people still do not know that Scarlatti played both types of harpsichords namely cembali di penna (feather quill) and cembali di martelletti (with hammers) that is early pianoforte.
