An extra funky, funky jammy jam reaction 🕺🏾🎤🎷🪘🎺🎹🎸🪘💃🏾! Payback was released as the second single from James Brown's 1973 album: The Payback. It was written by James Brown, Fred Wesley and John Starks. It was produced by James Brown. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #26 on the Hot 100. The song was James Brown's second single after "Get On The Good Foot" and final single to be certified gold by the RIAA. James Brown's live shows were on point full of energy with a live band, singers and dancers backing him up!
James Brown wrote the song: The Payback, for the 1973 movie: Hell Up In Harlem, which was directed by Larry Cohen. James Brown had soundtracked Larry Cohen's 1973 film: Black Caesar, earlier that year, scoring a hit song: "Down And Out In New York City". James Brown's musical director Fred Wesley and drummer John Starks came up with a song after watching a rough cut of the movie, which had the working film title: Black Caesar's Revenge. According to Fred Wesley and John Starks, when they recorded the song, James Brown came into the Augusta, Georgia recording session and literally tore up the sheet music. He reworked the song, incorporating lyrics that describe exactly what was going on in the first scene from the film.
They recorded the song and overdubbed background vocals and horns a month later. Fred Wesley then flew the tapes to Los Angeles and delivered them to Larry Cohen, who rejected the song. Fred Wesley says Larry Cohen told him it wasn't funky enough while James Brown said Larry Cohen told him it was "too black". An irate James Brown ordered Fred Wesley back to Augusta, Georgia and the song was used as the title track to his 1974 album. The song proved more than funky enough, going to #1 on the R&B charts and earning Gold record status for selling over a million copies.
Some television series that have used this song include: New York Undercover (1995 "Catman Comes Back"), Scrubs (2003, "My Kingdom"), The Bernie Mac Show (2005 "The Big Payback"), Everybody Hates Chris (2007 "Everybody Hates DJs"), The Wire (2004, "Moral Midgetry"), Damages (2007, "Because I Know Patty"), The Cleveland Show (2010, "The Curious Case Of Jr Working At The Stool") and Them (2021).
Some movies that used the song include: Dead Presidents (1995), When We Were Kings (1996), How To Be A Player (1997), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), How High (2001), Poolhall Junkies (2002), Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), Identity Thief (2013), Bumblebee (2018), You People (2023)
Among the hundreds of artists that have sampled the song include: "Hold On" and "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" by En Vogue, "In The Meanwhile" by Jodeci, "The Big Payback" by EPMD, "Somethin' Funky" by Big Daddy Kane, "Protection" by Massive Attack, "Happy Days" by Silk, "Can't You See" by Total, "Get Down" by Nas, "The Boomin' System" by LL Cool J, "Mic Checka" by Das EFX, "Blow Your Mind" by Redman, "Everything" by Mary J Blige and "King Kunta" by Kendrick Lamar.
The song was used in the 2004 video game: "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", game soundtrack on the Rare groove radio station Master Sounds 98.3.
    James Brown Info 📰:
James Joseph Brown was born on May 3, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina. He passed away on December 25, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a singer, writer, producer, actor, activist and multi-instrumentalist. After watching Jazz and R&B singer Louis Jordan's performance footage as a youth, he decided that he wanted to be a musician and entertainer. He is the central progenitor of Funk music and a major figure of 20th-century music, he is referred to by various honorific nicknames, some of which included: "The Hardest-Working Man In Show Business", "The Godfather Of Soul", "Mr Dynamite" and "Soul Brother No. 1". In a music career that lasted more than 50 years, he influenced the development of several music genres. James Brown was one of the first 10 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural induction in New York on January 23, 1986.
James Brown recorded and released 17 singles that reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts. He also holds the record for the most singles listed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that did not reach No. 1. James Brown was posthumously inducted into the first class of the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013 as an artist and then in 2017 as a songwriter. He also received honors from several other institutions, including inductions into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In Joel Whitburn's analysis of the Billboard R&B charts from 1942 to 2010, Brown is ranked No. 1 in the Top 500 Artists. He is ranked seventh on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

On August 17, 2013 the official R&B Music Hall of Fame honored and inducted James Brown at a ceremony held at the Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University. On April 24, 2023 James Brown was inducted into the newly established Atlantic City Walk Of Fame presented by The National R&B Music Society Inc. His daughter Deanna Brown Thomas accepted the honor on his behalf.
James Brown has influenced many artists including: Sly And The Family Stone, Funkadelic, Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, Booker T & the M.G.s as well as vocalists such as Edwin Starr, David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards and Michael Jackson, who, throughout his career, cited James Brown as his ultimate influence. A little know fact is that James Brown opened for a singer named Little Willie John, in 1956 and proclaimed him the only singer that he ever considered better than himself.
James Brown has also brought many notable singers and musicians up through his live performance Revue show including: Tammi Terrell (singer), Fred Wesley (Trombone), Maceo Parker (Saxophone), Bobby Byrd (Singer, Multi-Instrumentalist), Lyn Collins (Singer), Bootsy Collins (Guitar), Vicki Anderson (Singer), Clyde Stubblefield (Drummer), Pee Wee Ellis (Saxophone), Yvonne Fair (Singer), Marva Whitney (Singer) and Martha High (Singer).
James Brown began his career as a Gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. He rose to prominence in the mid-1950s as the lead singer of "The Famous Flames", a Rhythm and Blues vocal group founded by Bobby Byrd. With the hit ballads including: "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", James Brown built a reputation as a dynamic live performer with "The Famous Flames" and his backing band, sometimes known as the "James Brown Band" or the "James Brown Orchestra". His success peaked in the 1960s with the live album: Live At The Apollo, and hit singles including: "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's A Man's Man's Man's World".
During the late 1960s, James Brown moved from a continuum of Blues and Gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making, emphasizing stripped-down interlocking rhythms that influenced the development of Funk music. By the early 1970s, James Brown had fully established the Funk music sound after the formation of the J.B.s with songs including: "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". He also became noted for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit single: "Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud". James Brown continued to perform and record until his passing from pneumonia in 2006.
On April 5, 1968, a day after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr in Memphis, Tennessee, James Brown provided a free citywide televised concert at the Boston Garden to maintain public order and calm concerned Boston residents (over the objections of the police chief, who wanted to call off the concert, which he thought would incite violence). The show was later released on DVD as Live at the Boston Garden: April 5, 1968.
In 1974, James Brown had a classic live performance in Africa at the "Zaire ’74 Festival", held in conjunction with the Muhamad Ali vs George Foreman fight dubbed as "The Rumble In The Jungle".
In 1980, James Brown appeared in the cult classic film: The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Akroyd and John Belushi. James Brown appeared as the Reverend Cleophus James, pastor of the Triple Rock Baptist Church. A role he would revive in the film: Blues Brothers 2000, in 1998.

As a tribute to James Brown, the Rolling Stones covered the song: "I'll Go Crazy", from James Brown's Live at the Apollo album, during their 2007 European tour. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has remarked: "He [James Brown] was almost a musical genre in his own right and he changed and moved forward the whole time so people were able to learn from him".
On December 22, 2007, the first annual "Tribute Fit For The King Of King Records" in honor of James Brown was held at the Madison Theater in Covington, Kentucky. Jimmy also uses the song's lyrics: "I'm mad, I want revenge", when his brother dies in his arms during the movie scene.

Don’t believe everything you read. He may have only had two single certified gold, but he had quite a few gold singles back in the day. King records did not pay the money to get the records certified as 1 million sellers so he probably had anywhere from 15 to 20 million selling singles.

My mom was a HUGE JB fan. I heard his music all through my early childhood. His song, “Say It Loud, I’m Black And I’m Proud “ was very popular in our Harlem neighborhood. I hope you will do some Jackie Wilson also! Try his performance of “Lonely Teardrops “ from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1962.

The songs from the Tami show in 1964 would be a great thing for you to react to a James Brown. Also, it’s a man’s world from 1981 live there are many many different things of Mr. Brown you could react to. I love to see you getting excited over something you never saw you know Mr. Brown is one of the greatest!

@@ronaldmillner6387 first of all, you can’t see the original it’s just a recording there’s no video with it. And you don’t have to listen to the original to appreciate this live version. A person that reacts to something is going to get more views if there’s a video to go along with it, as opposed to just listening to a record. There are some reactors that do react to the records but that’s their choice.
