This is a fantastic document of a very important band. It's amazing how fast they were playing live in this phase of their career. It's most likely that when they played Southern California they came in contact with the proto-HC bands of that scene (Germs, Bags, Weirdos...) and took some inspiration.
It's true! The book Recombo DNA is specifically focused on this cross pollination in the late 70s. I also have a vague memory of Brian Eno suggested that the Not Men songs be sped up, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's all so much better at this speed!

The fastest show I've heard is the 1979 LA New Years eve gig, just unbelievable. After 1980 most of their set was focused on their synthpop era, so less guitar driven songs and when they came back in 1988 they reverted the speed of the old 70's songs back to the original way.

But believe this simultaneous synchronicity took place all at once in various permutations all over the world. DEVO was but one jamming on this de-evolutionary frequency. Their precipitous event horizon was bearing witness to the Kent State massacre while attending studies. Much luv an appreciation to the O.P. and the incomprably great DEVO☆

On their way to Japan (or was it on the way back?), they played the Campus Center Ballroom at the University of Hawaii, capacity 600. The same set list as this on a much smaller stage.The first night there were about 40 people in the audience and Devo totally kicked ass! The second night sold out on word of mouth. I saw it all and got Gerry’s pants (intact) on the second night. The shows were so tight! Changed my life. The next time they came (the New Traditionalists tour), they filled the Blaisedell Arena.

I think this was near the beginning of the Japanese becoming obsessed with American pop culture. Before this, it was still too soon. I think it was somewhere around this time when KISS played at the Budokan. Which was completely sacrilegious. Those poor kids... LOL 👹🤘⛩💓
