  • Sheep are an ancient companion that once were the most abundant livestock upon the Wyoming landscape. In recent years the sheep market has floundered but as local foods broaden America’s palate again, the sheep are making a comeback…
We’ll visit a mother/daughter operation in Lovell raising crossed Dorper/ Katahdin hair sheep, both relatively new breeds, but gaining in popularity in Wyoming. We’ll also visit the homestead of the Spear S Ranch in Red Canyon where they work to restore the oldest domestic breed of sheep in the Americas, the Navajo-Churro. Originally broadcast on 5/10/19.

I envy these ladies for their knowledge of the sheep, their dogs & getting outdoors working hard...keeps them young. 😉

My grandmother had one of those rugs received as a gift in her 20’s and I remember her using it for over 40 years. It is still in the family getting daily use. Beautiful work! I started a conservancy effort for the Leicester Longwool which got as low as 50 total in number in the 1920’s. There are over 1000 breeding pairs but they are still quite precarious. Sheep are the greatest thing since wool sweaters!

1 year to 2 years old are called Hogget. Chefs are beginning to appreciate the flavor of Hogget or mutton.
    This was excellent.

Chefs don't always process all the animal, they often just want certain parts, so you are stuck to try and sell less desirable parts, which can be problematic.

Very interesting, just thought you would like to know the Romney sheep come from the Romney marshes in Kent, very much southern England. Good fat meat ratio. So sad the Navajo were not left in peace to live their self sufficient life.

Very informative and inspirational! One thing I don't agree on is that there's a cycle. In my opinion the cycle has been broken for a long time. As human feces are not re-used, nor are we eaten by animals, meanwhile eating too much meat. However if we must produce meat this ^ seems like a sincere way to go.

Be great to see some of their recipes for cooking lamb. Back in the 50s,60s usually served with mint to mask the gamey taste.

Gonna be butchering some sheep this weekend. Not sure what kind they are but they where farm raised on my buddy's farm in N.E. Tennessee. They lived a good and healthy life. Hopefully that will translate to healthy tasty meat on my table.
