In this video I will explain an easy way of memorizing polyatomic ions. For a printable list of polyatomic ions click the link below: millingschem.co...
2 weeks? Our teacher told us about the quiz 5 DAYS before, and she didn't even teach us what polyatomic ions were until 2 days ago. Now I have so little time to memorize all these before Monday :(
The table helped a lot, thank you. Then for charges I just remember that all the -ates that have a subscript of 3 are -1. All the -ates that have a subscript of 4 are -2, except for phosphate(which has a charge of -3). These at least apply to the family ions which I am familiar with.
Omg this concept really helps with hashing out all the ions really easily thank you so much! good example of how knowing a few rules can save you hours of studying
wooooo!! this makes so much sense! my professor had me confused lecture after lecture and I watched and understood it before the video ended!!! Hey thanks @Chem Academy :)
Thanks for this video. I'm in 10th grade and we have to have memorized all 27 of these by 3rd quarter and we've had 3 weeks to start. I struggled through the periodic objective checks (to see how well we're studying them) and after I literally got a 0/27 on one of the quizes I came here. Really saved my upcoming 3rd quarter thanks :)
my teacher never taught any of this. she just gave us the list of polyatomic ions and told us to memorize them. it's a lot easier to memorize when you understand what you're memorizing.
im over 1/2 of the way thru my chem class rn and im now just trying to memorize these (my teacher introduced these to us at the beginning)… this video has help more than anyone else🤞 edit: i also am a former catholic school kid, so it was HARD to grasp even the basics😭😭
i was told i have to memorize all of these in three days and i’m dying. my professor really said “you probably won’t be able to get all them by friday but they’re going to be on the exam anyway :)” AJHEJDHDJS
I am taking chemistry for the first time in college and wondering if it is safe to say that polyatomic ions that end with -ate can be thought of as the base versions of those ions and all the rest are alterations of that base version?
you are correct! CN- is cyanide --- it is a polyatomic ion because it is one carbon atom bonded to one nitrogen atom -- the total number of electrons is 14 and the total number of protons is 13 (carbon has 6 protons/6 electrons, nitrogen has 7 protons/7 electrons; cyanide results from other compounds when an atom like hydrogen disassociates but leaves its electron resulting in H+ and CN- in equilibrium).
Good summary of how the polyatomics scale up and down with the number of oxygens. Do you recommend students memorize this will brute force or are there some techniques and tricks to help get them down? I'm looking for suggestions. I've heard of "Nick the Camel ate Clams in Phoenix"... is that the best? Any advice anyone?
Understanding the suffixes and prefixes is easy- the tricky part is knowing how many oxygens are in the ion, such as sulfur ions in this example. There is no SO or SO2, but rather sulf-ite starts as SO3. The other -ites only contain two oxygens. Can anyone help me makes sense of this and the charges?
Wow!! Actually I made a list of people I will meet in my life and there is a guy from California in that list! And you are in LA!!! I have hit a jackpot!
Thank you so much for this video! You did a great job explaining the differences! Also, I tried googling the chart you have on this video and I can't find it. Where did you get it? Do you have a link to post so we can print it?
Thank you so much!! Also, is there any way we could print out or access the chart for the -ide, -hypo, -ite, -ate, and -per?? If so, it would be so helpful... Thanks again!!
I don't understand how this 7 minute video helped more than 2 weeks of my professor telling us "If you don't know the names you're all going to fail".
at least I now know that im not alone with this bs
I KNOOOOW it's bs when it's so easy to go over
2 weeks? Our teacher told us about the quiz 5 DAYS before, and she didn't even teach us what polyatomic ions were until 2 days ago. Now I have so little time to memorize all these before Monday :(
I know!!!!!
haha
This explained it so much better than my prof.... This definitely saved me from failing this next upcoming exam
I am happy to hear that!
Who's doing this the day before the quiz?
Hoops Legion I’m doing this on the day of the quiz
lmao me
lmao that's me

I was so confused and stressed about learning these until I watched this video so thank you so much, it makes so much more sense now

omg thank you
OMFG I was in the verge of tears trying to memorize thee for days on end, then I realized this 2 minutes before reading this comment
I was looking for a catchy chant but hey this helps too
Charts are helpful to many Chemistry students. I created many charts for my students. They are especially helpful for visual learners.

i've struggled with polyatomics for months - this cleared it up in minutes! thank you!!!
Before I didn't get how my 10th grade chemistry was expecting us to memorize these, but now it actually seems doable. Thanks 🙏
This has helped me more than my teacher ever has. Thank you!
Omg this concept really helps with hashing out all the ions really easily thank you so much! good example of how knowing a few rules can save you hours of studying
This was incredible, I might not fail Chemistry now :) Thank you
I failed three quizzes about chemistry, and its kinda hard, but this made me take my quizzes easily, thumbs up!
thanks! 4 years later and you saved another life
I finally found the video that makes sense and isn't so long that I won't have time for anything else. Thank you so much you saved my life!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Thank you so much for this video. This explains it better than my teacher.
studying for my chem final...refused to learn them during the year and this helped so so much thank you!

I'm pretty sure this saved me from failing chemistry and losing some scholarships. Thanks a ton!

woah, i just studied this one night before my chem exam, that really helped
u r a life saver man better than my professor
Now what was this so hard for my professor to teach. She literally gave the list and said "u have to memorize them" like😐
Thank you so much for this video. I also have a test tomorrow. This is very helpful. God bless you and don't give up on making educational videos.
