Thank you so much! last semester i was trying to memorize them with flashcards but it never worked and i had a chemistry exam this morning and last night i was so frustrated that i still don't know them. But after watching your video and doing exactly what you said, i made an A on my exam. the technique you taught me made a difference in me making an C and an A!
@@heitormuhl4665 Not me being 2 months late 👩🦯but using the chart at 2:30, you can easily remember how to get the amount of oxygen in a compound by the suffix and prefix, assuming you know the -ate form (ite = ate -1, hypo = ate - 2, per = ate +1 )
Not dissing the technique, but it would be a lot easier (and quicker) to just look up the "Memory Palace Technique." That's exactly what he's describing here.
Seriously amazing content. I was able to memorize the -ate polyatomic ions I need to know for my test in two weeks using this in less than 15 minutes! One of mine is Chromate - Our chrome toaster is broken because it has 4 slots and 2 are broken - C (chrome toaster) O4 (four slotted toaster) 2- (two broken slots) . This technique is seriously a game changer for my 40-year-old mind to memorize new content. Thank you!
Dude thanks for the video but you LITERALLY started the video with “you’re probably need to memorize it faast” or something like that and its been 8 minutes you could’ve made the intro waaaaayy shorter damn its says fast on the video
Silly cat = silicate. SiO3-2. It's a silly cat because it has three legs. It's also lost both balls. This technique works! Helping my kid with it, this was a good reminder. Took a bit to skip ahead to examples, but appreciate the reminder.
Hi Johnathon, thanks for continuing to upload these videos and resources to help others learn how to learn. I'm interested in the techniques, but I am not good at visual imagery. My memory is not bad, I often use mnemonics and/or rhymes/rhythmic devices. However, I would certainly struggle to use the approach you describe in the video. Do you find that there is a variety in the type of approach that people use to improve memory?
You're not good at visual imagery mostly because 20+ years of sitting in a classroom has trained you to be an auditory learner (against nature). Our entire method is predicated on re-learning how to be a visual / eidetic learner. We train you how to do it!
Hi Johnathon. I have actually tried to work on visual imagery before, though with no success. I appreciate that sometimes dedication is required to master a different skill, however, I also appreciate that there is no 'one approach' that works for everyone. Do your courses include approaches for people that don't do well with visual imagery?
I appreciate how hard you work on TH-cam and how fewer views you get. Great video Jonathan :) I think it did be great if anyone reading this comment can share this video on their social media.
hi jonathan, appreciate the video, do you have any targeted and specific for software engineers, either aspiring or seasoned for revision? big area in interviews is algorithms and data structures as well as recall of particulars of specific languages / technologies.
i dont need to memorize the polyatomic formula for Citrate but now i will always remember that model in the C6 corvette High 5ing people and 7 of them having spontanious orgasms which took -3 points off the model's driving record. now if only i hadn't spent 18 minutes watching a video on something that literally takes 4 seconds to explain: Connect the formulas to real life things
Johnathan Levi has produced a clear, concise and highly engaging presentation on memorization. Anybody interested in learning an effective and enjoyable way to memorize complex information will benefit from this introduction.

great way to totally remove your mental process from the actual chemical fundamentals and ensure you don't gain an understanding of how they actually work. Daydreaming about some deli ham is great and all but the best way to memorise polyatomic formulas is to understand how to visualise them on a physical and practical level.

CustardChucka You seem to have a process to memorize them along with understanding them, I have a test coming up and was wondering how you would recommend I learn them?? Thanks!
Honestly yo, this is a more effective way for the long term memory. You use strong images so it sticks with you strongly. I don't personally use those kinds of images/symbols, but the idea is to use associations that immediately come to mind so you'll remember the thing being studied in 10 years from now. Understanding the concepts is great. I'm a professional science tutor and I can attest that concepts mostly stick with you, but the individual names and terms do not. These tips are not meant to replace understanding the full concept, but are best when brought hand-in-hand with the conceptual study.

Psychologically there are two types of memory interference: Proactive and Retroactive Proactive is where the old stuff will interfere with new stuff if they're kinda similar (Like learning Spanish after learning french) Retroactive is where the new stuff will interfere with old stuff if they're kinda similar (Musically tryna play smth from the past after learning a new piece)
