Whitetop Mountain Band is based out of Whitetop community in Grayson County, Virginia and is represented here at Bluegrass At Allandale concert series by (from left) Ersel Fletcher, Debbie Bramer, Martha Spencer, and Thornton Spencer. Emily Spencer was unable to be present due to other obligations with Martha adding Emily's customary banjo and vocals to her own regular instrument and vocal performance.
Bluegrass At Allandale is held in September on Thursday nights at 6:30 PM for three concerts: Whitetop Mountain Band (17 Sept), ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band (24 Sept), and Turkey Creek (rescheduled to 1 Oct). Bluegrass At Allandale is sponsored by Food City, Eastman Credit Union, Signature Properties, Kingsport Convention and Visitors Bureau, Friends Of Allandale, and City Of Kingsport Parks and Recreation (Allandale Mansion).

Yes it does seem definitions vary. I think of flatfooting as low to the floor and freestyle, rather than using a routine."Medicare shuffle". Love it.
Any good websites listing fiddler conventions? Last evening was searching online and wonder if anyone has suggestions.
For those who want to take learning flatfooting slowly, Becky Stout, out of CA teaches it in small steps.

Clogging or flatfooting?

Everyone seems to have there own definition of these dances. One article placed "flatfooting" and "buck dancing" as subcategories of "clogging". Based on observations from fiddler convention dancing, I think the highly articulated style of Martha Spencer gradually evolves to the more sedate style of the couple to stage left as folks get older. Call that the "Medicare shuffle"- getting old ain't fun but it beats the other option..
