- Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of F-Zero X from Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The second release in the F-Zero series, F-Zero X is a racing game set hundreds of years in the future, a time when motor sports have lost the motor. These vehicles hover above a dangerous racetrack, blasting into turns and screaming down straightaways at speeds in excess of 1,000 km/h. F-Zero games have never been about car models or simulation - this is a visceral arcade racing game that's all about memorization and reflexes. This video review features video gameplay footage of F-Zero X for the Nintendo 64 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.

I love this game, I wish the series kept going after GX. I tried some other "similar" games, like Wipeout, but it wasn't the same. I like the way the vehicles in Wipeout handle, even better then F-zero, but they are so slow! I won so easily, and I could blink!
It isn't an edge of your set video game if you can blink and not die.
11 years wihout a new f-zero.... nintendo please.. :(

@@wearevenomyouaredinner433 Captain Falcon belongs in the Blue Falcon going faster than the speed of sound. Not on cartoonish 2D fighting stages trading blows with Kirby and Mario. I would rather Nintendo continued the F-Zero franchise than the smash brothers one.

This was seriously the first game I bought on the Wii's VC, and I don't regret it one bit NOW. I did before, because I sucked at it, but now, it's my favorite racer.

F Zero X is better than every single Mario Kart game. Why Nintendo neglects their best franchises I will never know.
Eternal Light For the most part. Yes, it clobbers almost all the Mario Kart games, but to me, the only Mario Kart game that F-Zero X couldn't beat is Mario Kart 64.

AnnoyingReply I couldn't disagree with you more. F Zero is great because it focuses on *racing* not throwing randomized items at people. Keep that nonsense in Mario Kart where it belongs.

Watching this made me jump on ebay and grab a copy. Found a complete one for less than four bucks. awesome.
Super Smash Bros. BRAWL was the game that made me want to get F-Zero for the Super Nintendo and I thought it was a great game. But, THIS is the game that made my balls explode and made me into the F-Zero fanboy I am today.
One of the most kick ass games i have ever played.
I wish I had had this game back in the day. I would have had a better childhood, I think.

Best racing game on the N64, hands down!
This is a very underrated game that's still quite playable today. Thank God it's available for the Wii Virtual Console although sadly that version lacks rumble support.
I love F-Zero. I own both F-Zero on the SNES and F-Zero GX for the Gamecube, but I've only ever played this one on an emulator. Regardless, this is a flawless series as far as I'm concerned.

Fingers crossed for a new F-zero game in 3D. No back pedalling back to 2-D, just actual improvement.

this game is like if you mixed pole position and galaga, multiplied that a thousand fold, and put it on steroids. this is one awesome game.
If you hold the joystick down while on the receiving end of a submission hold, the other wrestler won't let go. That would explain AKI Man pummeling Rick Rude over and over again. Rick Rude appears in the game in a managerial role and can be controlled by the player with the third or fourth controller. But him tapping out is probably faulty memory unless they used a GameShark to make him a playable character. Managers don't tap out.
That is unless Dark AKI Man 2 really _did_ assume control of the game.
Arcade DNA? Nice Derek, real nice! Your right for calling it under appreciated because I never knew a F-Zero game came out on the N64 (I knew it came out on the Gamecube). SHIT games like this make me wish I got a N64 back in the day, and I was pretty much a Sega fanboy back then so I never paid attention in getting one.
@h20DDs Project Cafe is said to have HD versions of these games on its virtual console.

My dear review person... If you have yet to defeat the brutal stage 3 in Story mode... You have no idea what hell awaits you after. And even if you do witness it. I guarantee you, you will lift your Gamecube controller in the air, fall to your knees with tears in your eyes and say: "I BEAT IT!" Because that is what I say to my F-Zero GX... Btw great review sir :)

Flying off a race track at thousands of MPH and landing to your horrifying death in a ball of atomic fire that rips your skin off with the power of a thousand suns and exploding your bones into ashy shards is a hell of way to "Retire".

This game is so sick. I picked it up at a local game store for 5 bucks. Wiiiinskis.
This is my fav. of all the F-ZERO games released for home consoles(yes there is an arcade version), the SNES ver. never really grabbed my attention, and the GameCube F-ZERO GX was just too F*cking hard, and give me nightmares trying to beat it, and still have not too this day(bought it on release day), and having found this one used at a local game store for $4 was totally awesome. This versions Kicks ASS!!!
one thing that bugs me about this review is the lack of on screen destruction, most 30 vehicle races i was in would normaly end with maybe 15 vehicles still alive tops cos i keep destorying them all :L another awesome aspect of this game

Wasn't there a F-Zero GX and there was a hidden rom of ZX on it that you can get now for flash carts?
@FreedomOstrich No he's not, they're vastly different games. F-zero(snes 1990) played a bit like mariokart on steroids, while the first wipeout (1995) had real hovering physics. 3 years later came f-zero x

How have they not made an F-Zero X for the Wii?
@Newbpwn3r180 True, but it would be nice that one day we can have an F-zero game that allows you to race 100 racers at once that is also in HD and will not drop below 60 fps. If Nintendo can make something like this for N64, think of what they'll make for Wii 2 or 3DS.
I wonder what F-zero would look like if there was a version made for Xbox 360 or PS3. Not that that would ever happen, but if the Wii was as powerful as those platforms and Nintendo did not have such an overfocus on casual games, would the next game display 100 racers onscreen at once and be as colorful as Hydro Thunder Hurricane?
what about the need to attack rivals on harder difficulties and the multi-player track generator that gives random tracks forever?!! One of my favourites and most played ever, black bull FTW

The games graphics had to be toned down in order to keep the game running at 60 fps

Personally I prefer Wipeout HD over F-Zero, it's more challenging, but they're both good.
