The love poured into the bonus content/digital museum reminds me of the first years of DVD when studios put their own historians and researchers and threw everything in, to sell us on the new format. Digital Eclipse just set the bar and on a clear day you can see it up there. Oh and J - E - T - S Jets! Jets! Jets!
Gotta admit your title had me worried as so far I had only heard good things, glad to see that's not the case, it really does seem like Digital Eclipse actually gave a damn and put effort into it unlike so many companies that seem to just crap out endless subpar efforts that just want to bank on nostalgia and nothing more. Actually, Star Raiders II started off life as a movie tie in for The Last Star Fighter. Nice video! Thanks for taking the time to highlight this title that I was originally planning to skip but not anymore.
Yeah, but its Star Raiders through and through. They were just going to give it a last starfighter paint job, the movie came out in 1984, star Raiders came out in 1980 for the computers and in 1982 for the 2600. It was going to be a cashgrab ruse. Digital Eclipse has always put out good collections & they really outdid themselves here. I'll agree that "Vector Sector" alone is worth the price of admission. I do wish this collection would have included the PSP evolved versions of "Asteroids" & "Super Breakout", but it's hard to be disappointed with what you do get. Now if only SEGA would do a collection like this but focus more on their coin-op arcade games like "Carnival" "Pulsar" "Tranquillizer Gun" 'N-Sub" "Twin Squash" "Monster Bash" & of course all 5 of their vector games.
It DOES suck! At least on a console. Any game that requires a paddle or a trackball is completely unplayable. Tempest (2 versions), Warlords (2), Super Breakout, Neo Breakout, Breakout (2), Centipede (3), Millipede (3), Missile Command (4), Crystal Castles (2), Major Havoc, and Pong. That's at least 22 games and some of their best ones!
@@FunkmasterV Yeah, I guess I shouldn't have got the Xbox version and instead got the Steam version for my Mac. The mouse and trackpad work great with most of these games.
I feel like it was MUCH better than the Jeff Minter collection - which was booty hole. If you play on an Atari VCS, the classic controller helps out with the paddle/ spinner games, although its not 100% arcade perfect. The games that feature a trac ball suffer- Centipede is okay, but things like Crystal Castles is tough to deal with. They did some great control implantation with the 5200 and Jaguar games, however.
The game is ok but just wait and buy the Atari 2600+ in November or buy it now the Atari Flashback 130 games Gold Console 50th Anniversary Edition very Cool !!!!!!!!!
You’ll be all missing out on a lot. If I had the choice now, I would buy this for the Atari VCS. The classic controller makes the spinner games 10 times better.
That’s one of the biggest problems for me too, however digital eclipse has hinted that there may be a future DLC. Hopefully that will be something they address
@@DuckAlertBeats They may implement them later with a DLC... it does keep your high scores on the arcade games and the newer games at least. But not the 7800, 5200, VCS games...

@FunkmasterV oh man, right! Damn, I'm so close to buying an Xbox series S or X just to play Flight Simulator. My father worked for American Airlines growing up so been on over 100 plane trips. I'm pretty sure it will be boring af or I won't even get a 737 off the ground, lol. I did get an app in my Android Cell and I can play Halo 2600. If only they would put that and the Super Mario home brew in the collection. Can you imagine if we had those on the 2600 and Commodore 64 back in the day!?!?!. Man. I wish the PS store had a homebrew section or would at least publish those. I'm stoked to have figured out how to play Halo 2600 on my phone. Now I need to find a legit Super Mario rom.

And then I played Chuck Yeagar's Flight Simulator. Taking the SR71 into space was rad!!! 😆. My father worked for American from the late 60s or early 70s, starting at JFK and LaGuardia until getting transferred to DFW, retiring just after 9/11. I'm blown away that I can find my neighborhood and even a representation of my house. Ilk let ya know if I make it happen.
I don’t know why anybody would want the 2600 version of Pac-Man, but none of those three made it. These are games that Atari created, not just featured on one of their systems. There’s probably 500 great games not on this compilation, just too many licensing issues. Still plenty of great ones

Let me investigate that and make sure, I watched a video where digital eclipse said that worked for the Xbox and/or PC, I was just assuming it would work for the switch, but let me check that out first

Lol no it’s not. for practical purposes, it was a 32-bit console. It had a 64-bit object processor, but all of the actual processing happened in 32-bit.
@@FunkmasterV Yeah they havve been debating this for years it seems. Someone explained it pretty well around here somewhere how the graphics system works. I would agree they seemed to be crippling the 64bit part of the system with the way they used it.
The Jaguars graphics syatem was 64bit. The performance of the object processor and blitter were unique in that their performance was limited by and dependant upon the main bus. This is why in the specs you don't see a speed or mhz rating for them. What Carmack referred to as chips with no theoretical upper limit. Unfortunately use of the motorola 68000 choked the bus by a factor of 20 but was more convenient for devs to use. This is what you see in most every commercial Jag game.
You are smarter than me on this. I’ve just always heard it’s not really 64 bit. The homebrews they are making nowadays are finally taking advantage of the confusing and strange hardware that makes up the Atari jaguar

It's always been 64-bit! Most people were just focused on "flashy" graphics and not inquisitive or technically minded enough to realize it. It has five processors on 3 chips. Two 64-bit processors, the object and the blitter... with direct access to the 64-bit bus, two 32-bit processors, and one old fashioned 16-bit processor.
i love this game... and like you mentioned "atari cash grab" everyone is giving this game crap because of the game choices... c'mon, who doesn't have almost every friggin' atari game they like fro msome other compilation that they've purchased in the past? Lots of new stuff, lots of weird stuff, lots of never before released stuff... it succeeds in being what it was trying to be, and the people who don't like it obvs weren't meant to be shopping for and buying it, ya know? :)
It's strange the vector games having a soft look to them as this was not at all so when I played them Inthe 80s & with the omission of battlezone, red baron & many 2600 games this for me is a thumbs down & here's to 60th,70th & 75th anniversary releases £££ zzz
No! What’s great is that you can adjust the glow of the vector graphics in each game. The developers Even said that each arcade machine was different, so you can adjust the vector graphic to best replicate what you played as a kid in the arcade. That’s pretty amazing
There is a lot of casualties due to licensing problems. I’m sure Steven Spielberg has tied up part of that. There is a section of the documentary part that’s dedicated to ET and the mass burial in New Mexico
@@FunkmasterV On a serious note I am not sure what has come out on the other classic Atari collections and it's been forever in a day since i went back to my childhood in the video game department but I had HE-MAN and that game was awesome. No one I know ever owned it, and I have never seen it at conventions and/or Fleas. They put Asteroids on there and I KNOW it has to be on a previous release but what about Barnyard, Keystone Capers, Atlantis, Popeye! 👍

That’s not entirely true. They’ve never released Jaguar games, 5200 emulation is historically bad, and there’s a few prototypes that have never been released. Plus, six new games they made especially for this comp. AND… this is more of an interactive documentary than a games collection

Actually they used to be known for their awful emulation and presentation, notoriously bad, but they seem to have improved :)
Their cowabunga collection is a prime example of their improvement
This collection is what persuaded me to buy an Atari VCS, and i have not been disappointed.

Digital eclipse, the company that put together this compilation, developed a fantastic jaguar emulator. I hope that leads to more games too

Acutally on PC you can use both mouse and controller allowing for trak balls games and such to work well. Best of both worlds.

it doesnt have online leaderboards. i play arcade games for the fun of competition, so this is a giant bummer for me.

It’s absolutely one of my favorite video games of all time. I’m having a blast with these arcade games I’ve never played.
