    UPDATE: I have the new Legion Slim 5 (14"). Check out the review here: th-cam.com/video/rop_5YjPX-k/w-d-xo.html
    Hey everyone, long time no see. What's your experience been with Lenovo Legion laptops? I've been over multiple Reddit threads with people recounting their troubles with the dreaded micro stutter.
    If you're interested in more reviews like this, please let me know in the comments. Have a great day everyone.
    As promised, here are some other great reviews of the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i that are a bit more positive than mine:

      So that is a 3.2K resolution. Now I know what you're thinking, I should have dropped it to 1440p or even 1080p right? Well I did that and the stuttering remained the same.
      On my Legion Slim 5 with a 4060 I can actually run it on a 4K monitor with DLSS on at close to 60FPS on medium. The Legion Slim 7i is capable of running the game at 3.2K with DLSS turned on, but at the time of the recording, I was having stuttering issues regardless of what resolution I ran the game at.
      Also, I took a quick look at your channel, you should post some more gaming vids! What are you playing these days?@@ChudGippity

      @@Payne. O yeah it is nearly 4k u r right.
      I watched ur other video abt the AMD version. Sorry for that but some thing got scrambled in my brain .
      But in any case that is happening bc it was intel model your 7i slim it was I think.. The AMD especially with 7745hx models are way better. And yeah that GPU 4060 or 70 is 1080p chip but use that Ai checkbox for every mode bc u r using DLSS and FG I see u do not hate them lol or if u want to bump up resolution use external monitor. Ur native has to be with out stutter/maxed out so when u turn on dlss fsr fg they will do what they are made for . If the hardware is struggling on native it cannot give u more like u expect it is in need of POWER

    Interesting. I have the AMD version of this laptop with the 4060 and it's been great so far. Great battery life, great screen, great performance, even the speakers are fairly loud. My only gripe is that the 99.9whr battery gets a bit warm when it is being charged.

    Hi Payne, i Have Legion Slim 5, RTX 4060 version. i also had these micro stutter issue before, but after long search and try to tweak it here and there for almost a week I (think) found a solution.
    long story short, it was because the Windows 11 feature called GameBar and Game Mode. basically, it was because of program conflict between Lenovo Vantage Power management (and its bios) vs WIndows 11 gaming feature that glitching this optimization programs, resulting in unsynchronized frame processes. also i notice some black screen display bug after reboot if you clean install Nvidia GPU Driver. you should only express install it, since the OEM driver .dll from lenovo that tweak this display switching get erased if you do a clean install (you have to manually install the OEM again to undo this bug).
    but unfortunately, I have to return this laptop too because I have a defect keyboard and some weird sleep issue. otherwise a very good laptop build for working and gaming, while also it is the only gaming laptop on the market that don't scream gamers aesthetics, which hated by most of adult people.

    I had the same problem first couple days with the laptop was getting very hot after I installed the last version of the Nvidia driver and the micro-stutters were even watching TH-cam that when I went to the processes in task manager, Nvidia Container was using a lot of the CPU every other second, I disabled it and all the micro-stutters were gone. Also, I installed the last version of the Intel's video driver and all videos problems that I was having in EDGE disappeared, so I decided to do a Clean installation of Windows 11 from USB, installed all the drivers including Nvidia from Lenovo and the latest from Intel's website and now the laptop is running like a dream. My two cents.

    I have almost the exact same model, i9, 4070, etc. Only different screen, more RAM, and storage. I founda this video because I am having the same issue. I tried ALL power modes and it did not make a difference for me. The thing is I've had this laptop ever since it came out, about 4 months now, and did not have this issue before. It just started happening within the last couple of weeks or so, so I am sure it's a driver/firmware update. Ive noticed that it happens when I a not gaming, too. Within Windows, if I am just browsing around, or even watching YT, my mouse cursor, and the videos will micro stutter. A quick fix I found is to log out of Windows and log back in. That normally gets rid of the micro stutter for a day or two (your YMMV) until it comes back again. Then another log out/log back in gets me a couple more days until it happens again. I opened a ticket with Lenovo and they just sent the usual canned response (make sure your drivers up to date, etc. etc.). I hope this is fixed soon. I am certain it is not a hardware issue, since all of the sudden a lot of people just started noticing this within the last few weeks.

    • @unknownsol0
      @unknownsol0 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Another issue I noticed that started happening around the same time is my Thunderbolt 4 dock started acting up. Before, it used to just work. Now, it keeps connecting/discoonecting. I know the dock, and cables, work because I use the same setup between this lenovo, and my Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro doesn't have any issues with it.

       @unknownsol0 This sounds like a latency issue with a process. Try running LatencyMon and see if you are in the green there. If not it will show the process that is the culprit. Try killing that process and see if it helps with micro stutter on YT and games.

    Recently purchased the AMD/4060 version of this laptop. Have had no such issues. I have had an issue where i can no longer get below about 20-25w per hour of power usage on battery. When fresh out of the box, i could get 6-12w. I haven't been able to find yet what has caused me to lose half the battery runtime. I will likely try a fresh W11 install soon. The AMD version doesn't seem to have Adv. Optimus at all.

I’m from India…was planning to get this variant since it had excellent reviews & seems to be one among the best of 2023 models…went through your complete review & other people’s opinions on comment section regarding the stuttering & screen blackout issue…really pushed me into a dilemma regarding the purchase because the slim 7i is not available on Lenovo Indian website recently but it’s available on all Lenovo offline retail stores so it really scares me whether they are trying to push out all the defective stocks…I really wanted to know whether it’s jus a driver update glitch or a serious hardware issue ? I guess you can answer my question now because it’s been nearly couple of months since you posted the review so if it’s a update glitch I hope it would have rectified with a recent update else I’m assuming it would be a hardware problem. Hope you can let out an honest opinion ! Thanks in advance

    @Payne. I also had stuttering issue, the computer just needed a simple restart. The problem is that windows computer does not shutdown entirely when you "shutdown" in order to boost the reboot time. You need to click restart instead of shutdown under the power menu. Also, under task manager --> Performance --> CPU, you can check the Up time. This Up time does not reset on "shutdown", only if you shutdown completely or restart. It is most likely a software issue and somehow clogged up the system and needs regular reset and probably more frequently if high usage.

About the reboot part, it is just good to reboot at least once every 2 days if you're gaming to reset the laptop so it runs smoothly. Seems weird. I have a 2021 Legion 5 Pro and the only occasional stutter I get is in some open world games when the game is loading a new area. I usually use Auto mode with the frame rate pegged at 60 fps using vsync. Mainly because 60 fps seems like enough for most games and it keeps the temperatures and fan noise down. Plus I haven't noticed any significant performance increase when using Performance mode.

    3200x200 is too high a resolution for a 4060 - even with dlss you're bound to run into 128bit memory bus issues once the cache buffers run are saturated. Just try 2560x1600 or 1920x11200 for a while, the stutters will disappear, and both these two resolutions are plenty for a 16-inch laptop. And I'm sorry, but you want games to run on quiet? You're starving your CPU from waaaay too much wattage to play recent games where different threads depend on others - hence the stutter.

    • @Payne.
      @Payne.  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I appreciate the really detailed reply. Just for clarity the stutter is present even at 1080p and this is on titles I have and haven't shown.
      This laptop is running a 4070, not a 4060 and despite the limited VRAM many owners don't experience stuttering at all, even at a higher resolution.
      I wish I could have shown all the footage I captured for every game I tested, it would have been a very long video! If you're after some more perspective on what this and lower powered Legion laptops are capable of on Balanced and Quiet have a watch of some other TH-camrs. Tech Guy Beau is a good one.

I have a Zenbook Pro 14 OLED with a 13900h/4060 that has the exact same kind of stuttering in some games when run natively 2880x1800, but little to no stutter once I lower resolutions and lock the framerate to 60fps. This mostly happens in poorly optimized single threaded games that were designed for a 30fps PS5 with 16gb unified memory (CPU usage is also far lower on that architecture as it has a dedicated asset decompression chip). So that could be it perhaps?

    • @Payne.

      I may just have unrealistic expectations on this laptops' performance? Like many, I based my decision on TH-cam reviews and watching the performance in "AAA" games with DLSS on and running quietly. I have a Legion with a 2070 in it connected to a 4K monitor, and it runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, high, DLSS on with no problems.

    I find that games that stutter on my 4070 laptop (Rog flow x16) also stutter on my 13900k 4090 desktop. Lies of P stutters on both, Doom Eternal is smooth on both, Code Vein stutters on both, Baulder's gate is smooth on both. I haven't tested every game I have, but I notice that the stutters are a bit more pronounced on the laptop in lower power modes, but they still happen in the same gameplay areas on my desktop. I think Unreal Engine games stutter the worst. Lies of P tries to compile shaders before gameplay but it still stutters a bit in places. Ouch, pretty harsh don't you think? Not every laptop is perfect and sometimes you get a bad one in the batch. I'm confident your 7i will be fine and I really hope it is!
      For clarity, you don't need to "program" a laptop out of the box. Yes you need to download drivers and ensure they are up to date but tweaking power settings using third party programs should not be a requirement to run games without hitches or stutters.
      I have another video on the Legion Slim 5 where it works straight out of the box without any "programming". That's what I expected and that's what I got, I'm really happy with it.

If this guy had this many issues he should have sent it back for warranty. People do make choices based on reviews so it's very valuable. Good thing for me is I watched 20+ other youtubers review this laptop and didn't have any issues at all. Thats how I made my decision. This guy on the other hand can screw up alot of people's decision making because he had a bad experience which may not be that accurate of one.

      Hey Derek, for clarity when you say “this guy”, you're talking about me. That's me in the video. I opted for a refund over a return and instead went for the Legion Slim 5i.
      There are many people in the comments who have experienced the same problems I had, I'm not alone. There are also countless people who have zero issues, it's just the nature of mass-produced technology, not every batch will be perfect and to believe that this is “the only bad one in production” is unrealistic.
      As you have said, there are more positive reviews out there which absolutely shows I am an outlier, I've never denied that in the comments. I'm not confident you watched the entire video and based on your comments above you seem personally attacked that I had a bad experience with a laptop you haven't even received yet! I genuinely hope everything works well out of the box.

You made a video critiquing all kinds of nonsense and didn't do the product any justice. Out of all the reviews on this laptop on TH-cam this is the only negative experience one and like I stated. Hi @Payne, thank you so much for this honest video. It opened up my eyes to an issue which I at first thought it might just be my fuzziness, but it turns out I'm not alone.
    I also have the Legion Slim 7 16, be it with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX 4060 for that case, but I have the exact same issue with micro-stutters in almost all 3D games I have tested, even in just benchmarking with TimeSpy. I've tested with various games like Shadow and Rise of the Tomb Raider, Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, GTA V, Guardians of the Galaxy. The only game where I did not notice any kind of visible stutters, was with Red Dead Redemption 2, funny enough.
    I tried everything, like disabling AMD Platform Security and Microsoft Device Guard in the BIOS, overclocking the dGPU, custom Power profiles with max. settings, switching off tobii head tracking and RGB, etc. I've even added a 16GB SODIMM to the onboard 16GB with exactly the same speed and timings. Some things helped a little bit, but there was always some kind of stuttering. And I don't think it has something to do with thermal throttling, because my tests were done in a room at 13 C (55F) and the temps of the GPU seldom went above 60C and for the CPU 70C.
    What made it even more obvious, was the fact that I had the opportunity to do the same testing on a Legion 5 slim 14 with the same Windows installation and GPU-drivers. With that laptop, there were absolutely no issues - and that was before even sawing your confirmatory video on the Slim 5!
    And even if the RTX 4060 in the 5 slim 14 has a technically lower TDP of 100w + 15W Boost (vs 115W + 25W in the Slim 7 16), it had almost the exact same performance in gaming benchmarks. The Slim 7 only had a 300 points better score in TimeSpy with an excellent 11448 (vs 11145 on the Slim 5 14). I must say I'll much rather prefer a bit lower FPS with the smoothness of the Slim 5 than the choppier higher FPS of the Slim 7.
    So you have absolutely gone the right way with Legion Slim 5 14! Thanks again for this honest review, because with 99% of other reviews about the Slim 7 I have looked at, they were sponsored either by Lonovo or Intel and I had the funny feeling they might have been biased and nobody else mentioned the possibility of micro-stuttering.

      @Payne.  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for taking the time to document your experience with such detail. It really doesn't seem like thermal throttling because it was apparent almost instantly. HWiNFO indicated everything was fine from a temps perspective.

    i have similar but with 13900HX cpu. I had stuttering in windows but after removal pesky McAfee virus It actually runs very smoothly without any stuttering.
    Also I did some heavy calculations and it actually works well with boosting P-cores to almost 4.8 GHz and that is impressive... Btw, only recently I have upgraded Vantage and it now works even better.
    However, this laptop has issue with Ubuntu. It runs smoothly and so on but when I calculate something very heavy (regardless the mode) after awhile it drops to base frequencies (to 2.2 GHz) and calculates at such low frequencies with no spinning being like a quiet mode and cpu temps are low (50-55 degrees celsius), but again after awhile (it can any time, 5-30 min) it activates max speed and this continues.... when I bought it, it worked fine with constant max speed and loud sound from coolers and after awhile these performance cycles started. I do not understand what happened with laptop. Cannot find answers for 5 months...

    So, a timely review on your part, and my stumbling into it. I picked up a Lenovo Legion Slim 7i here in Canada a couple of weeks back, as most of the games I play are e-sports titles and older RTS games. I figured the RTX 4070 would more than suffice for those, and this laptop was easy to pack along for my regular business travel. I found the same as you did, in that unless I was in performance mode, I was encountering micro-stutters, even with average FPS (CS2, Doom: Eternal) being in the 120-150 range at native 2560 x 1600 (high settins, no DLSS). I also did find that I had issues with the laptop having some performance issues even in productivity apps that were demanding (issues with MS Teams and large video conference calls leading to performance issues, that were only solved by jumping into Performance mode). That was even with an additional 32GB of 5600 MHz RAM installed, and the primary drive swapped for a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB. I had a chance to grab a heavily discounted Alienware X16 (RTX 4080), which isn't as "business friendly" as the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i, but I can just leave the Alienware X16 in Balanced mode the entire time, and have zero performance issues of any sort. I preferred the weight and less "gamery" look of the Lenovo Legion vs the Alienware, but between some consistent performance issues, and a couple of nagging quality issues on the Lenovo, it's getting returned tomorrow to Best Buy. It's too bad, as that Lenovo had lots of potential to be the ideal business / entertainment laptop for me.

      I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed reply. It's nice to know I'm not alone! I've since reverted to a Legion with an RTX 2070, and I'm not enjoying stutter free gaming. Even Cyberpunk at 1440P with DLSS on works wonderfully.
      I really do love the design and features of the Legion Slim 7i, and like you, it had the potential to be the best business/entertainment hybrid. Part of me thinks that if I order another one I won't face the same challenges but I'm not willing to take the risk.

      From reviews I know that the Ryzen 7840HS need much less power and as a result the gpu can use this power.
      Intel kinda sucks in efficiency in the current gen.

    my legion 7i pro 13900hx 4090 has microstutter as well its less in hybrid oddly enough but its due to the dpc latency which is quite high on latencymon. anything thats capped at 60 you'll be able to see it more. first noticed it in sonic mania cuz my ally and legion actually runs it smoother and dpc latency is also WAY lower on those devices so yeah thats whats causing it

      Thanks for commenting. I can assure you I've tested across all fan profiles and while your FPS will drop, you shouldn't be getting micro stutters. Those modes are designed to reduce fan noise at the cost of performance, not to make the games you're running unplayable.
      There is a lot of additional testing I did that I couldn't cover in the video and I'd be happy to run everybody through every step I took to resolve the problem.

      It's very easy to tell what fan mode you're in, if you're not paying attention to the light then you'll know by how loud it is! In saying that Balanced with AI mode on sounds very similar to Performance mode.

      @Havanu81 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      3200x200 is too high a resolution for a 4060 - even with dlss you're bound to run into 128bit memory bus issues once the cache buffers run is saturated. Just try 2560x1600 or 1920x11200 for a while, the stutters will disappear, and both these two resolutions are plenty for a 16-inch laptop. And I'm sorry, but you want games to run on balanced or even quiet? You're starving your CPU from way too much wattage to play recent games where different threads depend on others - hence the stutter.@@Payne.

      I always play in balance or quiet on the legion 7 with rtx 2070, never micro stutterings. It might slow down, but micro stutterings shouldn't happen. Lenovo Laptops have a wide range of issues that is all too often connected to their Vantage software. They need almost always quite some tweaking until all runs smooth.

    Dont have the slim version - but ppl have commented on some videos that they get stutter to.
    Only thing I can recommend is updating drivers- from Vantage + BIOS then also keeping Nvidia up to date in Geforce Experience.
    Lastly try turning on dGPU mode instead of hybrid optimus - then in BIOS you can also enable CPU Overclock - and UNDERCLOCK your CPU in Vantage which might help.
    FINALLY - the last suggestion - is you can turn of CPU Power Boost which reduces heat/fan noise in Power Options - > Advanced - go to your power plan and go to CPU and turn off boosting.

    stuttering issues are becouse of the bloatware instaled on the machine not the power draw of it. For Example you do not need Lenovo Vantage or Gforce Experience , those are bloatware apps that slow donw the machine , who knows what else you got in there. use a debloater to debloat windows and close down ussles apps and the stutters will 100% dissapear.Lenovo are great laptops , never had any issues with them ever.

When making a rewiev of a laptop/PC , its basic knowladge that one must use the latesed drivers and sofware provided and that does not mean only from the support site, most of them are months outdated.
