Pete Cowen's bunker coaching method is the best one going for me. I was taught it a few years back and I've learnt to hit high and low bunker shots depending on the shot required due to his simple set up drills and technique pointers.

Huge thanks to Locker and you with the more square, to a hair closed bunker stance, and weight forward. My bunker game is decent but suffered from a low/mid flight from greenside bunkers. This small tweak in stance has extremely helped to get that nice higher splash out of the bunkers. When trying this on the course today had a kick in par on one bunker shot and made a 3-4 footer on the other.
    Thanks guys, love the vids.
    Cheers bruh

Interesting hearing you mention patterns, relating to using Lockey's technique and still being able to use your own. I realised that when I can use my imagination really well, I can "switch over to autopilot". Just feel how each shot should feel and play. But I go through cycles where the feel just isn't there, so I have to go mechanical. Then after a short while the feel comes back and I can autopilot again. The quicker I recognise during a round where I'm at with my long, short and putting game. The quicker I can adjust to what I need to do and keep my score in check. The trick is having a mechanical thought/move that is just enough to focus on and improve your next chip or drive. It's better than going through negative crap of 'I can't chip today" etc. Great vid

Was taught this technique by Coach Lockey over at the Georgia Club last week. Must say I'm with Mark in this as my previous technique was very similar to his; although I can do both, consistency of strike, distance control and divot pattern was definitely much better on average using the squarer set up with the flick at the bottom. Hit 50 balls with Coach using his technique and didn't leave one in the bunker or catch any thin whereas my old technique I'd usually knife one or leave it in at least 10% of the time. Cheers Coach!

It's almost more fun to watch you guys get a lesson. Really intriguing how you guys are able to share so much more with your thoughts and how you make sense of it with your own words. Rick Shiels has been doing this with Dan Whittaker and it just takes teaching to a whole new level. Great stuff guys

Loved this bit... I love the exchange of techniques between the two of you. It shows your open-mindedness too.
And I've always questioned the "old" method of opening your stance,etc.. so it's a good comparison..
Let us know how you make out please.

Mark, I have the same problem that you do do...deciding on a proper technique. I believe that in golf, you can be too athletic and this can be a hindrance. You can perform multiple tasks with multiple techniques which can only complicate things. I've learned to be more decisive. 🐈

I was taught this flicky technique a while ago and I cannot use it in bunkers with next to no sand in them. I find the bounce of the club does what it does best and bounces off the hard sand and sends the ball over the green. In nice sandy bunkers it works a treat.

    Mark,
I have been a big fan of your videos for a while now. Your teachings videos had a lot of impact on my teaching philosophy when I was working at a club numerous years ago. I like this video because I have noticed some of your short game issues as compared to when I first started watching your videos. Coach referred to something being off and not being able to put a finger on it. Your shots starting at 2:50 seem to have serious amounts of dipping with your lower body, as if your trying to help it up. it appears to bottom out the club early and thus making strike inconsistent. Your swing in bunkers around the 8:30 mark seem to have a much more stable base and I think it allows you strike the sand where you want to more consistently. Has having a more stable base been something you have considered or tried.
I am curious if that would help your strike consistency.
    Ryan

A big fan here who is going through exactly the same bunker shot issues as Mark- old school vs new school. At 65 (10 HC) I definitely learned old school and I'm not too bad, but this winter at Leadbetter's academy in Orlando I asked my instructor to show me the new school approach that I see so may tour pros using (a la Lockey and especially LPGA). Of course he made it look easy and I had some success. To get ready for the season I've been doing 1 hour work outs in the bunker for the past 3 days trying to duplicate that success, wondering like Mark "is it technique or just practice?". I am still more comfortable with old school. Mark, once you get it all figured out please tell us the key elements to making the transition to new school. Coach does it great, but I would like to hear how you made the change if you decide to go with it. Thanks.

Ball position plays such a big part of bunker play. Seems if it's not forward enough then you have to do things to enter sand before the ball. Manipulation I guess. Ball forward and you can slide club right under it.
