    Hi, thank you to everyone who let me know about Mindy Kaling. I had no idea about all of the sexual harassment and a shit ton of other incidents of awful behavior by her. I’m shocked by what I found out and disgusted by it all. I’ll be doing an authors behaving badly on her. Thanks everyone for letting me know!
    Also apparently Meryl Streep is also a shit human. She supported Harvey Weinstein??? Bitch what???

      Yep, she retweeted a JK Rowling tweet about being fine with people not liking her bc she has a lot of money. Plus the ableism, transphobia, and showing "tastefully covered by hair and soap" underage teenager of the Velma show. I remember people hated a Holocaust antisemitic joke in Never Have I ever (directed by Mc toward the love interest).

      Kudos to you for being able to admit when you were in the wrong, thats hard to do publicly! For those of you not aware, yeah mindy kaling has a lot of transphobia, specifically antiblack racism and general shitty behavior.

    This is why I have stopped even looking at awards when buying books... I just read the blurb, read reviews from average readers and hope for the best. But awards feel meaningless at this point with how inaccurate they are and how many of them are paid for.

    • @ArcticWolfe84
      @ArcticWolfe84 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      When I was first trying to branch out into new genres, I used awards lists as a way of helping decide what to buy. Worst decision I could have made. I don't think I necessarily hated *every* choice that I made this way, but the results were certainly skewed that way.

    • @meedabuhuh3084

      @@ArcticWolfe84 couldn't have said it better myself. Not to say that all books with awards are bad - pretty much every single one of my favourite books have won awards - but I feel like buying something just because a panel (that, again, was probably paid off) says so is the wrong way to do it

    Also, I think Huda F Are You was in graffic novels, but it was going against Heartstopper and especially with the new Netflix Show, there was no chance of anything else winning lol (Although, I suppose this brings up the same problem of there not being enough Goodreads Choice Categories and then how things are chosen, or not, to be in each category. Like how there's no category for historical romance, and how none are ever chosen to be in the "normal" romance category either. 🤷🏽‍♀️)

    I'd be interested to know if amy of the celebs write their books, I know Tiffany Haddish had a ghostwriter but I assume most celeb stuff is ghostwritten?
    The Mindy Kaling stuff about intimate scenes is gross and at least verging on harassment, imo. It reminded me of that story she told about "improvising" kissing Lee Pace on The Mindy Show, him looking a bit surprised, and then ordering the other writers/producers to not say anything about it being improvised or they'd be fired, like ewwwww...

    • @LadyKittybug
      @LadyKittybug ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah it’s highly likely that Lee Pace bit was exaggerated to be funny, but ma’am sexually assaulted co-workers and then using your power to threaten your employees isn’t funny. It’s never been funny, tho yes there was a time when no one would have batted an eye and would have laughed and thought nothing was wrong, but doesn’t mean it hasn’t always been wrong.

    I can totally relate to that hot sauce thing because my grandmother was and still is like that. If she finds out you like one thing, she'll decide to make it your entire personality. There was a phase of my childhood where my entire room was decked out in horse stuff. I had a horse calendar, horse books, toy horses, horse figurines, clothes with horses on them, a "How to Draw Horses" book, photos of horses, and why? I wasn't even that obsessively into horses. She saw me with a vintage Breyer horse I got from my other grandma, asked me if I like horses, and I said yes because I'm an animal lover and I like most animals, and she decided this meant my favorite animal was horses. Dogs are my favorite animal. Horses ain't even in my top ten.

    The Jenny Lawson book sounds funny, I'm definitely going to read it! 😁
    Also the Last Black Unicorn sounds awful, I can't believe someone with a conscious can read that part of the book and say 'yup totally 5 stars!' I can only assume they thought it was a girl boss moment or the fact that she's a minority gives her the right to say awful things about other people even if they too have probably faced a lot of discrimination.

    This video was amazing as always but a little note for the future: coming from an autistic person, I’d recommend refraining from saying phrases like “my son has autism” since it adds to the stigma that asd is a disease, it’s better to say “my son is autistic”.

    Your makeup is so beautiful! Also, all these seem to be memoir by comedian, which I wouldn't say is the same as humour? When I think of humour I think of PTerry (GNU) or PG Woodhouse etc. I don't get the impression many people write actual humour these days. The closest thing I can think of that was recently published that I would class as humour are the Thursday Murder Club books by Richard Osman.

    I like how half of these are autobiographical? Memoir? And not like- a comedy book but a book written by a comedian. Not saying that books MUST be non fiction to be in the category but it’s wild to me that it’s ‘rich actor wrote a book. Laugh.’

    Love your chart explaining what is and isn't funny! I don't know why people still think ableism makes good humor. I also think you're absolutely right that the books that win are often not funny but are good in their own right and were really only picked because of the author/s.
    I couldn't get through The Last Black Unicorn once it got to the part about Rosco. It was absolutely horrifying.
    I enjoyed Lauren Graham's book when I read it. I loved Gilmore Girls but refuse to revisit it because I have a feeling it wouldn't hold up.
    Your public service (reading The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo) is much appreciated. I cringe whenever she opens her mouth. I think the episode of Always Sunny where Dee gets her "big break" in standup, which is pretty much making fun of Amy Schumer's "comedy," sums up why she isn't funny.

    I used to love Tiffany Haddish but like the more I find out about her I'm just convinced her childhood messed her up and she just thinks a lot of things she experiences and do are normal or funny little anecdotes to tell everyone. Like, I'm not even defending her behavior or saying this as an excuse. I genuinely think something isn't clicking in her mind that her idea of normal isn't normal at all. It's fucked up. It's really disturbing.

    There's so many different types of comedy - written, stand-up, scripted tv/movies, casual/everyday, etc. - and absolutely no guarantee that being good at one form of comedy is going to translate into being good in any other form of comedy. Like, I know I can be funny in a conversational setting, but putting me up on a stage to do stand-up would only lead to a positive outcome if your actual goal had been to see me hyperventilate and pass out in a puddle of my own pee. I often feel like that's the equivalent of what we're seeing when presented with a comedian or comic actor's book.
    Jenny and Allie, on the other hand, really are masters at the kind of comedy that lends itself to being published in book form (or as an online blog, which is where I was first introduced to their stuff).
