    Today we're heading back to the world of 009 narrow gauge model railways for a locomotive review I've been waiting a while to do! This is the new Mainline Hunslet model from Bachmann - a surprise 009 release made at the end of last year and, like their previous narrow gauge models, Bachmann have once again pulled out all the stops.
    I'm taking a look at the 'Charles' in the Penrhyn Lined Black livery and to make things even better this gorgeous 009 model is sound fitted too! It even features a working firebox LED, a feature which I believe is a first for a 009 RTR model. Of course this locomotive has a lot to live up to but with the general success of Bachmann's narrow gauge range, this looks like it's sure to another winner.
    See bonus footage of this sound fitted loco running: • Gofod Tynn - DCC Sound...

    Really nice looking, and well running model, and you did a great job reviewing it. I just wish Bachmann would keep the prices down so the hobby stays affordable…

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think we have to appreciate the fact that 009 is still very much a niche scale and Bachmann won't be able to sell as many of these as a standard 00 loco (for example) so that does push the price up. The upside is that they've crammed in as many features as a possible to make it worth that price and it's not that much more expensive than recent N Gauge releases. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @modelrailfan37
      @modelrailfan37 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy yes I definitely agree with you on that, but in general Bachmann’s prices (and Hornby’s) as of late have been crazy high, and it’s getting to the point where I feel as if I’m not going to be able to afford the hobby in the near future. This is a great model though, that is not at all what I was trying to get at.

    Nice to see OO9 scale stuff. One thing I would Love to see is a Big OO Scale layout with an OO9 scale layout with it.
    Also, the Penrhyn Mainline Class (Which is this locomotive being reviewed) is the basis of one of my Thomas OC’s.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it is nice to see the two gauges together. I've definitely seen a large O gauge layout with a O-16.5 narrow gauge line at an exhibition, but I'm not sure if I've seen anything like that in 4mm at an exhibition yet. Thanks for watching 😃

    Wow, what a beauty from Bachmann. Remember when many of those separate detail parts would be molded into the boiler as one part? Not any more! Even the piping, while outsized, would likely be far more work than it would be worth to correct. One part would affect another, then another and so on. All in all, a great addition to the roster. Terrific review, as always.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh absolutely, we've come a long way even in just the last 5-10 years alone. It wasn't that long ago that Bachmann had a reputation for creating fairly simple models with high price tags - the later may still be true but the quality and finesse of the models has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Thanks for watching 😃

      Yep Blanche and Linda are the two mainline hunslets at the Ffestiniog, admittedly much altered from their original look. It seems likely that Bachmann will do them both as models in the future though if the diagrams in the instruction booklet are anything to go by 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

  • @HarmanMotorWorks

    I have the 'Blanche' and the 'Linda'. Wonderful engines! They will tolerate very sharp curves that the other larger engines will fail to negotiate.
    P.S. I noted some 'cogging' on your engine as it rounded some of the curves around 10:19....I had that with my Linda out of the box especially when going in reverse around curves. I found that some careful application of silicion oil to the connecting rod big ends and piston slides freed it up very nicely.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, being 0-4-0s they do very well with the sharp curves! I don't actually think it's cogging though, it's due to my poor track laying as several locos have trouble here! 😅
      There's a bit of kink in the line to accommodate the point which I suspect isn't perfectly level either. In comparison, on the opposite side of the layout the other curve is much smoother and the loco didn't have any trouble here at all. Thanks for watching 👍

    Lovely model indeed! As it should be for the price. However, no crew? That's pretty sad, given the open cab. BTW, your line, in Wenglish, ought to be pronounced Govvod tun'. But it's your track - you can call it what you like.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's only the preservation model of Linda that has an open cab from what I can see. Modelu do make a crew set though which is very nice.
      Yes I've had lots of comments on the pronunciation of the name, both online and at exhibitions. So far no-one has given me a consistent answer yet so I've pretty much given up trying to get it right at this point 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

    • @tacfoley4443
      @tacfoley4443 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Well, if you ask a Welsh speaker, they'll likely tell you that 'gofod' - pronounced 'govvod' means 'space' as in space to do things, and 'tynn' is not Welsh at all. Welsh words don't end in double consonants. If you are looking to use a word for 'narrow', then that is 'tenau', pronounced 'ten-eye'.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tacfoley4443 Like I said, I've been told several different things by several different Welsh speakers at this point... though I'll admit being told "tynn" isn't even a word is a new one this time.
