I took a cinematography class in college, and we studied Laurel and Hardy quite a bit because they did such wonderful sight gags. And their use of the camera was so good that filmmakers are still trying to figure out how they did some of their "sight gags" all done with practical effects. and optical illusions.

Out of The 3 Stooges, Abbot and Castello, and The Marx Brothers, none of them are as good at the slapstick comedy as Laurel and Hardy.

3:04 Communications major with a film emphasis here. The way they would edit film back then was actually easier than you might think but still took a while to do. They would take a razor or scissors and cut the film into what they needed. The film would just run when there was an outtake. That is why when you see a razor tool in an editing software, you are cutting the clip to what you need just like they did when they used film. When they were doing effects, they would run different film and run them into each other in a camera to over lay them.

Most of these films were made in the 1930's. They were not "shows", they were short films shown in movie theaters. When TV came along, they showed these old films, but they were not made for television.

They were theatrical shorts that were shown before the advertised full length movies in a theater.
Some of those shorts were later shown in half hour or one hour TV programs in syndication.
As far as you not liking the clips you watched, it's okay dude we all aren't born with a sense of humor. Their comedic brilliance was just that, as they transitioned from silent to sound films without missing a single beat. No worries, as there are plenty of people worldwide who appreciate their approach to comedy. Their work is timeless.

Some of the jokes are still relatable to this day despite being filmed over 70 plus years ago.

These were movies, not TV shows. The art of Laurel and Hardy was the slow burn. Think of Seinfeld. The plot slowly develops and that's what brings on the humor. You just watched a bunch of hastily thrown together clips of prat falls, not among their best. I suggest that nest time you're watching a bunch of edited clips that don't seem to follow a coherent storyline, perhaps you should question whether the video you chose is doing justice to a well-respected act, rather than dismiss entirely the actors. Yes, people find L&H funny. I certainly do.

The things like someone flying through the air et. are done that way still; a stunt man who looks like the actor on a wire, or simply falling with the camera titled on it's side, then a shot of the result, and the pieces of film literally cut (edited) and stuck (spliced) together physically with glue.
By doing this to the original negative film from the camera, then positive copies of the resulting movie can be 'printed', which is sent to be projected in a cinema.
Modern CG began with ways to smooth the joins, and to create things that were too expensive (or impossible) to put before a camera.
If you watch the film 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', you will see many very old filming and editing techniques used, even to things like a lift going up a mountainside being a small model with a photo (piece of paper with the image of the lift on it) being slid up a track. No effects needed when it's smoothly done.
Hardy falling from the roof may have been a dummy, or even a photo of him standing with his hands over his head.
There is a Laurel and Hardy film where Hardy is working in a sawmill and travels through a tunnel used to blow all the sawdust out of the building, part of the time it's him, part of the time it's a small doll-size puppet of him, really being blown by the wind (or falling, with the camera on it's side).
Older movies are an education on how much a filmmaker can get away with.

So is giving up on this poorly put together example of Laurel and Hardy....the are many others like the Music Box or Sons of the Desert, Way Out West, etc. Laurel and Hardy were known all over the world in their day, in different languages. they became popular to new generation in the late 1950' and 1960's and 70's when Tv would rerun these Everyone since has stolen from them in some way over the decades....Dumb and Dumber is no match for Laurel and Hardy. Stan Laurel is British and the principal gag writer, And Hardy is American, his deadpan looks at the camera, his reactions and his willingness to participate in the physical and ridiculous chatter...they were put together by accident in a film or two and got teamed up by producer Hal Roach. Remember people did Not have TV when these were new...they saw the films in the movie theaters every so often. Film shorts, and full length movies. Laurel once worked with Charlie Chaplin in vaudeville shows [oh no, did I hear "Charlie Who?" Oh God help me....]
