      But the tandem instructor spent WAY too much time before finally cutting away, I hope he lost his rating to be an instructor.

    • @KSSilenceAU
      @KSSilenceAU 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      @@Ryan-yo4dg Given that the chute Canopy was Open, and they had slowed down already, they were not in imminent danger of injury / loss of life at that point. Heck, If that was their reserve chute in that situation, and they were forced to land like that, their velocity looks slow enough that they could easily walk away from it.
      Their main issue was being unable to control their direction to get back to the field. Instructor tried to see if he could unspin the lines first, figured after a while that wasnt going to work, so ejected the tangled chute and at the same time popped the reserve.
      Now if it were tangled in such a way that the canopy wouldn't open sufficiently to largely slow their decent, then you'd be in a dangerous situation.
      Instructor also needs to take into account that if he is to ditch his main for the reserve, that reserve had better dam open perfectly or they will be worse off, so in *Some* situations (Like this one) if you have enough altitude and time to spare, its worth trying to fix it.

    • @JayDee-xj9lu
      @JayDee-xj9lu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KSSilenceAU I didn't realize that the reserve had a slider? Or is that only with tandem rigs?

    • @alexispainchaud
      @alexispainchaud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@JayDee-xj9lu Yes reserve canopies do have sliders. They are generally designed to catch less air since reserve canopies may have to open fast in sub terminal speeds. Google for slider options in base jumping. Depending on the delay planed before deployment (therefore fall rate before pull), some people may go with a full slider, a mesh slider or no slider at all. No slider will limit the speed at which you may safely deploy but may be the only safe(ish) option if jumping at a very low altitude requiring a fast deployment.

    • @alexispainchaud
      @alexispainchaud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@Ryan-yo4dg As someone else mentioned, the most imminent threat (speed) being neutralized and being under a stable canopy following a stable trajectory, there was some leeway before chopping the main canopy.
      One technique that I was told about and got to use a few times is to ask the student to bring legs together and back, like in the exiting position. Then the instructor arches as well. It seems to shift the weight back and for some mysterious reason that I struggle to explain, it then unwrap like magic.
      I do see a few items where there is room for improvement. (that said, I wasn't the guy in the harness so there could always be a reason why things were done the way they were):
      - Decision making. Yes, everything was stable but he didn't change technique over time despite no apparent improvement. There was no emergency per se but any altitude you lose is time you won't have to plan your landing under reserve. Not the worst thing but just food for thoughts.
      - Since he had all the time in the world, it would have been a good opportunity to ask the student to go back into exit position, hands on the harness, head back, legs tucked, and for him to grab both handles before initiating emergency procedure(standard procedure as described by the manufacturer when altitude allows it).
      - Speaking of emergency procedures..... the reserve handle should have been pulled no matter the RSL or Skyhook.
      That being said, no way I would have an instructor's rating pulled for that and I don't see the tandem manufacturer (UPT) or the USPA pulling someone's rating for that. This video is only great debriefing material for the instructor and any instructor watching who likes to discuss techniques and procedures...... except for the fact that it's the student and not the instructor wearing the handcam which is a big no-no for both UPT and the USPA.
      I am a tandem instructor, have been for 13 years, for +/- 4500 tandems, and also a UPT examiner. I am also not a perfect instructor, have had my share of less than perfect jumps. Chastising is not how we get the general skill level to improve.

      @Teddy Li Why would you sue? It's a risk you accept (and legally sign). You can't go through life trying to blame everyone for some shit that happens. This is a common chute malfunction and isn't considered gross negligence on the part of the skydiving company.

    • @ChristopherNips81
      @ChristopherNips81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @Teddy Li In this case, absolutely that's what I'm telling you. In this case, the skydiving company is going to tell you, both verbally and written, "skydiving can be dangerous...shit can go wrong...don't blame us if it does." By suing in this particular case, that's exactly what you'd be doing. Suing someone for a variety of other reason can be holding others accountable for their actions, but in this case, you're just looking to blame someone. I just don't see any other way to look at it.

    • @ChristopherNips81
      @ChristopherNips81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Teddy Li I agree with you that a waiver is not the end all, be all. But again, with this particular case, this is one of the most common emergencies with skydiving. Someone who goes skydiving and signs the waivers (forget the legal aspect of it for a moment), i.e. warned about the risks, and still decides to jump...this guy wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if he decided to sue. He wasn’t injured, the company didn’t show gross negligence, the instructor managed to cutaway and deploy the emergency reserve as trained (albeit, some here state it could have been done better...but everyone is a Monday morning quarterback), and in the end, all ended well. I think someone would be hard pressed to sue for emotional damages in this case as well.
      In short, I have less of an issue with lawsuits than I do with a lawsuit over this particular case. It is why your comment caught me off guard. I’m not sure where you are from but in the U.S., there can very much be a “sue culture.” I think this example clearly falls under a frivolous lawsuit.

    I’ve seen some crazy tandems happen and all of the instructors are always calm and collective. Of course your average tandem instructor usually has at least a couple thousand jumps. The coolest one that’s somewhere here on TH-cam is when there is a line over and the instructor calmly ask the student “are you ready to go for another ride?” Lol. This was very well done and he kept a good eye on altitude. 👏

    Told my skydiving instructor and the class that if both chutes fail then I'm going down superman style with arms out and singing the theme song - no way was I going to cry and scream like a girl about it. My thoughts were if I'm going to die then I'm going to have fun doing it. Best case scenario i somehow survive as a blob of broken bones and a kick ass story to tell or I die and have some cool ass video to share at my funeral.
    First solo dive and I have chute malfunction - twisted line. My first thought was shouldn't have talked so much shit, second thought was okay how do i fix this shit real quick. Checked altimeter and started trying to pull the lines apart - that didn't work so well....had to give it a little jerk with my body to get them untwisted. Went back up and jumped again the same day. The next day I almost died in a car crash on the freeway when I lost control of my vehicle trying to dodge a tire on the highway at 70mph...shouldn't have talked so much shit about skydiving being safer than driving. But it was the same, remain calm and figure it out, you got time.
    Fun fact of life: 10 out of 10 people WILL DIE so get over it and get to living because death is going to happen anyway and there is nothing you can do about it.

    As the passenger put both arms up and to his left in a way that he could create a spin clockwise.
    I don't know if this is possible but it is what I felt to do.

    Many models of tandem canopies open with the brakes unset, in full flight. If you experience line twists, and the student's feet are out in front of the instructor (fairly typical, right?) the student's legs will act as weathervanes to prevent you from undoing the line twists. To fix this, wrap the student's legs with your legs and pull his feet back underneath you. You should find the line twists coming out normally after that. Totally unnecessary to cutaway.

    It seems if you unstowed one of your toggles and pulled down, you could spin the canopy from the top instead of trying to kick your legs.

    • @MrReasonabubble
      @MrReasonabubble 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it would be a good idea to release a single toggle on an inflated canopy under any circumstances - but in reality, since the brake lines are twisted up along with all the others I expect it would have no effect - the brake lines would not be free to move.
      And if you did manage to kick out your twists and you've released a brake in the meantime, that will certainly get your attention!

    Being a Tandem instructor for a while, I find something VERY VERY WRONG with someone pulling the cutaway handle and not having their hand on the reserve . you should have a hand on each , cut a way, count to 3 pull rip cord either way. WTF was this instructor thinking.. no communication to ARCH to student, suprise...... poof

    • @gingersnap5979
      @gingersnap5979 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      William Holbert, what does ARCH mean, I'm assuming it's an acronym. I'm jumping 1st time in 4 days. I'm 60 & have wanted to do this for 47yrs. Mega excited!

    • @jumpmasterjm
      @jumpmasterjm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Not an acronym. It means chin up, feet back, hips forward, curving your body into an backwards arch. It makes you fall belly first thru the air so the parachute can deploy cleanly off your back. Fundamental skydiving maneuver.

    What would happen if you would land with the main chute like that?
    You cannot control it, but it was nicely opened.

    • @MrReasonabubble
      @MrReasonabubble 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's opened, but it won't be flying quite as designed, because the twists mean the suspension lines are radiating from a fixed point above the instructor's head instead of from four risers at the width of his shoulders. That's probably affecting the trim of the canopy and could be preventing it from opening as wide as it could.
      You wouldn't have been able to flare it either, since the brake lines are twisted up along with all the others, and that would have made for a hard landing with quite a lot of vertical speed - uncomfortable at best, and injurious at worst.
      Finally, in that configuration you can't be sure what the canopy is going to do - it might decide to twist further, or it might suddenly untwist at just the wrong moment.
      If there's been no option but to stick with that canopy it might have been ok, but it certainly wouldn't have been pretty and there's no reason to do it - that's what reserve parachutes are for. :)

  • @alialnari

    • @divindave6117
      @divindave6117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eagleyekiller, there is a "cutaway handle" you pull that releases the 3 rings on the risers and you fall away from the main canopy. Its a brilliant invention. There are no knives used, you just pull the handle and ka-chink. Since my reply is 4 months later, you might know this already, but if not...well thats how it's done.
