    My parents are animal fosterers and an injured silver fox came limping to our door my mom didn't want her to feel captivated so after we healed her leg we brought her back into the wild about a month later she comes to our door with some fox babies and we had her as not more than just a pet, but a family member, we kept her in the backyard which is connected to a forest, but sadly, she died a year ago, we named her Cora and still miss her to this day

  • @TheStigma
    @TheStigma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Mistreating these animals just to have their fur as a passing vanity object is seriously fucked up.
    I wouldn't have the same objections if they just weren't treated so badly (just being cute doesn't elevate their inherent value compared to other intelligent animals in my eyes), but unlike cows or pigs you probably can't farm foxes in an ethical way even if you tried. They need to much space to be comfortable for that to be viable - so we just need to let this go.
    Feeding our pure vanity needs on the backs of animal suffering is just unacceptable.

    • @qwertyCandy
      @qwertyCandy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TheStigma THAT, plus there is another major difference for me - with say cows we use every single part of them, nothing goes to waste. We milk them, we eat their meat, process their organ meat, we refine and use the fat, use their skin as leather, use their horns and hooves for buttons... Regardless of the inherent moral issues, at least it's an efficient process that's useful and can help many people fill their basic needs like food etc. But killing animals just for their fur, not out of an actual need but a frivolous wish for a fashionable coat? *That's* truly barbaric, imho.

    • @TheStigma
      @TheStigma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@qwertyCandy True. But I still think cows ect. Deserve a life free needless suffering. Meat and hide may be less of a luxury than fox-pelts, but it's not something we couldn't afford to pay a little more for to make their lives decent. Most people would only benefit from less meat in their diets anyway.

    • @qwertyCandy
      @qwertyCandy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheStigma Yeah, I totally agree with that - I would gladly pay twice as much if it meant that they will have a decent life with as little stress as possible. Funnily enough I actually used to be a vegan, for many years, since my stance was that if we don't need to eat meat in order to live a healthy and full life, then I don't think that an animal deserves to die just to be my lunch. I still keep that stance, except I no longer believe 100% plant based diet is enough for full health (btw I'm not trying to make anyone decide one way or another, just sharing an opinion). And vegetarianism seems like a half measure since it still means farming cattle etc. So while I get that my stance on the this is probably very atypical... I would absolutely love to pay extra if it would buy them a significantly better life :)
      Also I look forward to insect farms - insect seems very nutritious, eco-friendly and much less morally problematic. And imho can be made into a tasty meal with a good preparation. So I wish it was a readily available alternative to beef etc. :(

      @@qwertyCandy just wait till technology develops eventually we will grow the cells for the food from cows that we want and just cook that. Meaning farming cows like that would be inefficient.

      matthew ramirez I hate it all. It's cruel and mean. The dogmeat trade is horrible as well. I will never eat meat again knowing what these animals go through. Not only other countries abyss animals before being slaughtered but right here in the states farm animals are bring raised in horrible conditions and being slaughtered in such a horrific way. No thanks I pass on any kind of animal abuse. I won't support it in any way or form. I wish I knew better and was better educated about this years ago because I would of gone vegan way back then instead of only the last two yrs. There's no way to kill an animal in a humane way. It's all mean. There's so many meat alternatives nowadays. They have veggie burgers now that taste and look just like meat. Well close enough. I'd sacrifice a little just to save a life so if it doesn't taste exactly like a burger then who cares. The world is so messed up because of these meat farms. We can't produce enough meat for everyone eventually nit without destroying our world. It will eventually all come to an end plus now days the new generation is now seeing what we didn't see so much of. Awareness is being spread and eventually everyone will know and see what really goes on. I just wish it was now.

I can't believe that in 2017 the t ruely horrible and vile fur trade is still going on, being allowed to treat animals in the most awful way,, just so some other horrible person can wear a fur coat! What sort of person wears a fur coat and thinks it's ok to do so? They mustnt have any feelings for the animals. No wonder the earth I is in the state it Is. I am sorry I am going on so much! You can have a fox as a pet, there are breeders in the uk, America and other places that breed domesticated foxes and they are considered exotic pets. in Russia they started doing it back in the 1950's. And before someone says they should be in the wild, domesticated foxes are just the same as dogs, which were domesticated from wolves and they are now mans best friend. And the same goes for all pets - cats, rats, mice, birds, rabbits, ferrets, even horses and lots more

    • @daleandrews367
      @daleandrews367 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you said about dogs from wolves is true but do you realize how many generations of animals must be bred (down) for it to be domesticated? Wow probably a few hundred. Remember the dog was domesticated from the grey wolf. This was probably done for many generations before the domestic dog was in fact its own breed.

      David A. native Americans also eat the animals and used the fur to survive winters so it isn't the same thing as people killing animals only for their fur simply for a fashion statement and do you honestly believe they don't use chemicals to treat and make fur coats you can buy in a store

    • @KAMIIINCHEN1
      @KAMIIINCHEN1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      David A. So just because it's not fur that doesn't mean there is only synthetic clothing left. There is linen, cotton, hemp and many other fibers that can be used for clothing that are ethically producable. Wool also if the sheep are well cared for . Especially linen is skin friendly, doesn't need as much water as cotton and is great with temperature regulation, also it has been used for centuries.

      Exactly. It's like, I'm not myself a hunter, but if you're hunting for food, then I understand. But foxes, they are killed for fur. Now, back in the past, I can understand it out of necessity to survive and for trade. But now that Faux Fur is a thing, there isnt really a point. Other than to please the rich. So, of we get rid of those who want it, then these farms will shut down operations.

      Yeah, they really do seem to bond don't they? They like to be with their human and get lots of play time with them and love from them or as you said they get upset. Better for them to get a bit angry than depressed though. Not for the uninitiated or for people without the space and time for them, however. You sound like you're doing right by your fox. It's too bad people would give up their fox after a few bites. I figure any clawed or fanged animal you get as a pet, better be prepared to get scratched and bitten. I've never had more than two cats thus far in my life (no space for anything larger or more high maintenance), and right now I only have one. But even that little cat has clawed and bitten me to shreds a bunch of times, just for play or "tough love" I suppose you could call it, those weird moments when animals express affection by getting a bit violent.

    Thanks for posting this. I identify with that yearning to be part of the wild part of nature; to embrace and somehow be worthy of being embraced by it as well. Like so many, it is sometimes reflected in the ideas I have for what I want as a pet. But for both the animal's and my sake, I must go into that direction with some common sense. That's why I appreciate your approach of respecting peoples yearnings while trying to channel them in a beneficial direction. For those who desire such a beautiful creature like a fox, I would suggest a Norwegian Elkhound which also has a beautiful silver-grayish coat, plus the added advantage of being trainable and of course having been bred as a pet for so long. Also the Shiba Inu, although not the same color, and also a dog, has a very wild animal looking beautiful coat, but I think they may be somewhat more difficult to train than the Elkhound. Also of course all of the wolf-like dogs that you have identified that I had never heard of before.

    At Monteverde, C.R. a silver fox approached me and ate a banana from my hand. It was a thrill. Also had a coati approach and saw a quetzel. God I love C.R.

    They are such magnificent creatures. I guess there are many Cons to keep them as a pet,, but I really don 't recall seeing any Pros in your video. Are there any that I just missed? Like your interviewee said, it would greatly limit your ability to go anywhere without the fox having problems. I remember another video where a family was quite happy with their red fox pet, but they indicated they pretty much had to dedicate their entire life to make it work, which they seemed at that time to be willing to do.

    Beautiful foxes. Love to watch wild animals, especially in settings where they can be the wild animals they are. But NO, I would NEVER adopt a wild animal to live with me. I'll get the only pet tenants are allowed to have in this apartment building--a small dog, a house cat, or maybe a bird, but the animal must be small and domesticated. We'll watch videos of lions, wolves, etc.!

    There's one huge lack: they don't let us know if they're talking about the general fur foxes or the fur foxes that come from the domesticated breeding line (based on the fox'd behavior when she tried to touch it, I'd suggest they're not from the domesticated line). There would be a massive difference. I mean, I have seen people keeping the domesticated foxes indoors, though I don't know how many accomodations they've had to make in the house.

    What about the domesticated silver foxes in Russia? I don't know if it is possible to get one as a pet, but would they be domesticated enough to make good pets compared to the wild foxes?

  • @vonchee7731
    @vonchee7731 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! I always wanted to have a silver fox as a pet! But unfortunately I don't think I would be a good owner for it. I'm never home, I travel and have a lot to study when I'm home. Only pet I can have is dog - I can, and I take him everywhere with me. He is my life companion, but I'm sure I cannot walk around with a fox on a leash... :/
    I'm thinking to get it maybe when I'm a bit older and when I'm home, when I have a lot of time, we'll see:)

    To everyone who says a fox is not meant to be a pet:
    Please define a 'pet'.
    And let me correct you a tiny bit: EVERY animal can be a 'pet'. It's just that not every animal is a suitable pet for every person.
    This comes from a person who keeps rattlesnakes, other less dangerous snakes and tarantulas as 'pets', and happy with them on a very different level than keeping a dog or a cat, which I as well have. All depends on what exactly you expect and want from your pet.
    Simple.
