At 73 yrs old, I now pay dealer techs to work on the Spyder. Like Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies..."a man has to know his own limitations"!!! LOL
I don't have a Spyder but you kept my attention. I love learning just about anything mechanic. Especially if I feel and know the mechanic knows what he is talking about. Plus you made it look easy, as long as those folks with Spyders follow to the letter. You may have saved someones butt with those instructions. Great job.
Once again, Ace Spyder talk..! I'm not always happy with my tech, but I can afford my toy enough to let him do the tough stuff, and this was tough enough for me to pay the piper. Thank you so much for teaching me my limitations. As Always, you two be safe...
Absolutely great video on the rear brakes. Will downloaded to my archives. I replaced bearings in my rear wheel at 50,000 miles on my 14 RTL. When I put it all back together and aligned everything properly the brakes pads were tight and no loose play on the disk. So after test ride I knew something was incorrect. After I took it apart again I found that shim on the caliper that I knew was there was somehow missing. Somehow in the process of disassembly it fell off and rolled somehow under my tool chest. But that one little shim made all the difference I'm glad you pointed that out. BC
Nice video. Our 2013 RT has 20,000 miles now and I replaced the pads a while back. As you went through the process I was remembering how it went for me. I didn't have a problem but it is a process. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Take care.
That's my mechanic. If you don't know what the heck you are doing, ya better ask somebody. Lol. Wish we could have traded weather and I would have gladly done it so you could ride today. I won't rub in any details except it was exceptionally nice!!! Stay safe and wishing for better weather in the PNW!!!!!!
Thanks very much for that Shawn, very good. I don't have a BRP technician anywhere near where I live so if I can't do the work it stays broke. I'm going out to check mine right away, 9.17 am Monday. P.S 9.50am all good.
Great tech video as always. Glad you put this one out. Not ready for brakes yet but always good to know the correct way to do things. Not been able to ride lately, had knee surgery on the 18th of February. Looking forward to the near future of riding again. You guys have a great day, be safe and I'll catch you later.
You don't have to be a Spyder Ryder to appreciate tech talk from a Master Technician! Great stuff! I know from looking at the radar at work today that you're not having any better weather today than you did yesterday. See ya in the AM with my coffee. Peace and love.
Once again Shawn an excellent video to help Spyder owners out. You are a real credit to the Spyder world. It's stuff like this that keeps me watching your videos. Rick H.
There is an aftermarket tool that is a little square block that you can back the park brake off with, too. Use with a ratchet. Works ok, too. Used on many auto applications. There are a lot of moving parts inside that brake piston. I don't like the design, but it works for the most part, but makes the caliper cost way more.
I wish you had released this video about 4 days sooner. You would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. Now I need to go back and insure I did it correct.
I have a 2013 ST and the 2013 BRP shop manual. The manual says nothing about turning the rear brake caliper disc clockwise to move the piston in. Just thought people may want to know that the manual is wrong in this area. But, doing the brake pad replacement is dead simple.
Have you had an issue with the parking brake motor? My motor will not move at all and seems like it's in between on and off. The cable freely moves after I disconnected it at the caliper. 2015 Spyder rts se6. The micro switch looks to have some oily dirt on it also. I will check fuses tomorrow also after I pick up my new pads from the dealer.
Well I have found just the opposite. I know Shawn has to say Brembo brakes is better because he work for a dealership. I have had a 2019 RT limited 46000 miles and have replace the pads three time and BRP pads wear fast and do not have the braking power of EBC pads. I have a 2023 RT Limited now with 9000 miles and the rear pads are close and I will be putting EBC pads on it.
My husband is out of town and this happened to me.. he said I would have to get the dealership to tow it and take an Uber 30 miles home. I watched your video, walked into target, spent $15.00 on a crotchet hook and adjustable wrench and was back on the road in minutes! You literally saved me 100's of dollars! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
No, as the park brake is purely mechanical…. However, if it’s really stiff, you may apply enough pressure to push the hydraulic piston back into its bore. In that case, make sure you don’t push too much fluid into the reservoir and cause an overflow. All that being said, you’re usually replacing pads when resetting the park brake, so again, keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir… Thanks Carl!!
Hi Shawn I'm working on a rear break on my 2017 spider rt, for some reason the piston won't go in. can you please share me some of your technic. thanks
Use the two holes in the caliper piston to turn it in clockwise with strong snap-ring pliers or needle nose pliers. Make sure the park brake is released and you’re not actuating the arm while turning the piston in… You can get a socket set for cars that make this much easier. When back together, make sure you pump the brakes to pressure before actuating the electric park brake..! Take care Peter!! 👍
Been watching since getting my 2013 RT-S January 23. Changing rear brakes all went perfect until I could NOT budge the piston! Big Needle Nose didn't work. Applied as much inward pressure as I could manage and never felt any movement inward and certainly didn't twist! Very different than all the videos which appear stiff and hard to turn but my experience was more like STUCK! Any advice?
On a 2012 RT I'm about to do rear pads...the parking brake is a bit different(non Brembro) is there any additional worries from what you have described...you mentioned these older models have splines ....do i need to remove the parking brake pulley and if I do does that return spring stay in the pulley or does it come flying out? I appreciate ur videos THXS!!
If you have that going on, and everything is adjusted correctly, there's a new bulletin about that..! Dealer needs to perform a some tests, if it fails, there is a new park brake motor available. Thanks!!
Shawn, We recently purchased a 2016 Spyder RT Limited with 2800 miles.. yes not even broken in... well we had some problems with vibrations when running above 45.. (my thought wheels out of balance, brake problems) the dealer sent me to there sister shop a CamAM dealer.. they said yes there's a problem and after trying a few things came out that both front rims were bent.. (covered under warranty thank god) also I'm getting a brake pad smell (usually in the back of the bike when I stop) but not all the time.. and was told everything is ok with the bike didn't find anything.. I have emailed the dealer a few times with no response. guess I'm on my own now.. Now asking you any Ideas on what to look for?? otherwise the bike runs awesome... put over 3500 miles on in less that 2 months
Test rode a 2020 RT limited yesterday. The RT rocked like a boat and the steering was so touchy, I felt it was unsafe. Is this normal behavior for a Spyder?
It’s normal. It took me 1000 miles to get used to the feeling and it’s totally different than riding on 2 wheels. 22k miles on my 2015 F3 and I love it
At 73 yrs old, I now pay dealer techs to work on the Spyder. Like Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies..."a man has to know his own limitations"!!! LOL
Cool, That's true. I also like when Clint Eastwood said: He's in favor of gun control as long as he is in control of the gun. Or me of course. lol
That was certainly a well explained service message and I appreciated it.

YES!!!! Such an awesome vlog... this is the best video I have seen on Spyder brakes. You sir are the best.👍Enjoying the Spyder focus😁keep the coming!
Great tech talk Shawn. This is why I take my vehicles to an authorized dealer. They have the tools and the manuals to do it right.

Thanks for showing us how to replace the brake pads!👍
Ha... Love watching you filming doing mechanical work with one hand... quite the talent.

Great tutorial Shawn, I'm new to Spyders. I have wrenched on all my 2 wheelers and will do the same on my Spyder. Wealth of knowledge indeed
I have to said that this is the best explanation video I have seen. Even though I knew this already it's good to be reminded and refresh.
That pup has some Lab in him, beautiful and smart breed!

Always informative. Great work!
Much appreciated!

Oh no..! Sorry about the timing.
Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Great video, look forward to more.
Awesome Tech Talk, good stuff Smoak.
Shawn and Kelly great Spyder tech talk interesting enjoy Sunday. Be Cool and Ride Safe🇺🇸🏍🐶
Love the tech talks. Good information to know.
Brilliant Tutorial Shawn ... I've got a 1mm Gap between my belt & the Sprocket Flange & the wheel turns freely! 👍😁🤘 Beanie
Perfect belt setting..!
Thanks!!
Hi u2 great vid thanks Shawn and Kelly great video 😎🇦🇺👍
Awesome video guys thanks so much it was a great help to me
Great info, thanks a bunch.
Many thanks Shawn . Ace advise again from a true gent.
Outstanding information! Very interesting. I dont mess around with my brakes. I pay a tech to do it. I just dont have the knowledge.
Thanks Jim!!

Just thought people may want to know that the manual is wrong in this area.
But, doing the brake pad replacement is dead simple.
Instead of using pliers to back the parking brake off,I bought the socket to do the job. So much easier.

I have found on EBC brakes they seem to not be aggressive as OEM brakes on any bike. When riding it takes more pressure to get brake friction to feel.
Well I have found just the opposite. I know Shawn has to say Brembo brakes is better because he work for a dealership. I have had a 2019 RT limited 46000 miles and have replace the pads three time and BRP pads wear fast and do not have the braking power of EBC pads. Don't even own one, but know how to put brakes on one now, never know ,may need it one day.
Just like Bigdog; I know my limitations. I hate working in tight places and this blog shows the definition of tight spaces.
Is it necessary to take the brake reservoir cap off when screwing in the park brake piston?
No, as the park brake is purely mechanical…. However, if it’s really stiff, you may apply enough pressure to push the hydraulic piston back into its bore. In that case, make sure you don’t push too much fluid into the reservoir and cause an overflow.
All that being said, you’re usually replacing pads when resetting the park brake, so again, keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir…

Great Tech Talk!!
Great information 👌 but I have to ask why would you need to check the brakes for a new bike?
No need to pull down a new bike's brakes, it was just a show'n tell for you guys to see how they work...
Thanks Carl!
@@TheSmoaksVlogs gotcha, thanks

I don’t own a Spyder but I really enjoy your tech talks. Does your Brembo brakes on your street glide work the same way? I have a 17 ultra limited.
Shawn is there an adjustment to keep the parking brakes from staying on or freezing on a 2019 RT Thanks Porkchop
If you have that going on, and everything is adjusted correctly, there's a new bulletin about that..! Dealer needs to perform a some tests, if it fails, there is a new park brake motor available.
Thanks!!
When I get one this spring I'll let someone else do this lol 😂
Leave that kind of work to professionals thanks for the video guys take care
