With all due respect, the mask *is* explained via the scenery in Norman’s room; it’s given a mini montage, prior to the infamous mirror scene, where we see a series of ‘war-like’ masks… that’s where the design, in the story, comes from and, honestly, I love it!! Yes, it’s not the ‘ideal’ design but it was a big step up for the time and the highlights of purple (via the lighting) creates that Goblin image, while keeping it grounded within the Rami universe; I think to call the mask outright ‘terrible’ is disregarding the world building Rami and co spotlight within the film itself but each to their own.
I actually liked the mask, it gives that goofy sense that we see in the villains look in their original comic counterparts, yet terrifying and a almost realistic approach to a certain extent, It has some of that magic in my opinion.
Yesh, Norman Osborne isnt going to go into avatar levels of realistic trying to fool people it is a real goblin terrorizing them. He had military hardware and went mad inspired I think by his tribal masks in his office to crazy man make his identity a functional but maybe insane looking face

The green goblin mask looks cheap and makeshift from the ideals of a mad man, but thats its charm. Something someone who lost all sanity put together even as uncomfortable as it looks it produces fear in those whom wronged the goblin and it does that perfectly

i see what your saying. but i think the mask modernized the look in a solid way. plus how unmoving it was helped add to the creepiness, gave dafoe a lot to play off of, and focused on his body language. the rubber mask, while accurate, feels a little cheesy imo
I will die on the hill that that mask is ICONIC and one of the very best helmets /masks design of the 2000's alongside the With King of Angmar crown and the original Iron Man helmets
I grew up with this Green Goblin outfit and I actually like it. I think its the mask that makes me like it. The way mask looks makes me think the Green Goblin is in a constant state of trying to terrify there enemies.
I much prefer the practical suit and mask versus special affects. However in the context that it was meant to be a military prototype weapon, the goblin theme is strange.
Regardless of the mask does sometimes look awkward it still looks so cool in my opinion and quite intimidating if you ask me. However there is a part of me that I do wish they went with the original concept design for the mask having a mechanical features that would've allowed Dafoe to emote more while keeping a very accurate look, since the goblin design is a bit of an obscure look to translate
This mask actually was truly a memory defining, and probablby contributed to make the movie the staple that it still is today' It was scary, sophisticated, and didn't remove one bit of Dafoe's performance. I never heard of any criticism about it, but it fitted way better into the story than a weird prostetic mask. Osborn is a scientist, not a designer. This mask looks incredible ! It looked scary when we were kids and tnit perfectly fits the whole aesthetic of the Raimi films, the suit just works perfectly for live action ! I understand where you are coming from since it's very different from the comic book design and what could have been looked amazing as well *yet* to me saying it looks ugly or terrible is too harsh.
If anything people were upset at the mask at first when the movie came out. But after seeing Dafoes amazing performance and just how the movie was, no one complained. Haven't really heard this take seriously before. Makes me sad they destroyed the mask in NWH but it made sense of the tone and story.
honestly, so glad we got the mask/costume we got for the GG. It’s iconic. That other test one, though looked out of a comic, looked terrible and too cartoony.
I think it'd be difficult for them to have those scenes where he "argues" with the mask if it was made of a softer material. The cold, unmoving metal sitting on a table or hanging on a chair gives off a vibe that I don't think would work very well with something like rubber. It also makes him seem more invulnerable, since it's apparently bulletproof material. It wouldn't make sense for him to be easily defeating armed police and military members if his mask wasn't bulletproof. I think the ideal design would be one that folds open, similar to Iron man's helmet, maybe with an articulating jaw or eyebrows, but I like this design more than any of the rubbery, expressive ones.
The suit was clunky and bad, but the mask works so well with Dafoe and Raimi. It makes the green goblin formless in a sense since the mask doesn't need someone wearing it to keep it's shape. The green goblin could have left behind Norman and we wouldn't know. It works really well with the way Raimi both makes makes horror and believable camp. Much of the movie straddles that line well. The body armour went full camp, but the mask is great, and a force of nature like Dafoe makes it work.
It was so cool it’s like the mask was the character when Norman would be talking to himself? The mask was obviously rent meant to represent the goblin and amazing Spider-Man to try to do more comic book accurate and it just didn’t look good on the screen and realistically, I don’t think the green goblin whatever look good without a mask
I like the mask! 1. It looks like something that a madman with engineering skills would come up with. 2. It creates a contrast between Goblin as a tech based villain and Spidey as an organic based hero (once they made his web shooters biological). 3. It set Goblin's look apart from all the foam rubber monstrosities from previous generations of media, like Star Trek and TMNT, which in the early 2000s would have felt super dated and hokey.
I think Dafoe himself had the best joke about it when he called it the “Power Ranger mask”. Yeah it looks really silly, but it was creepy looking for the time. I do like that Norman actually destroys it in “No Way Home” and we get to see that manic Dafoe face when he goes back to full Goblin in the climax
I think the mask was great! It was the rest of the costume that kinda left more to be desired. The DID give an I universe explanation for the suit though. It was an military prototype like the glider. Though the concept mask was better, I am disappointed they didn't use that top Shattered half in SNWH. Better than those boring goggles
Honestly, from the test shots, I kind of hate that comic-accurate Goblin head. It looks like something from The Mask. I think it would have been way too distracting and potentially ridiculous onscreen. The metallic head they went with wasn't great, but I'd say it was the better of the two.
They explain the Goblin suit early in the movie with a random guy testing a glider in the lab wearing the same suit. Where the mask came from is anyone’s guess. Most likely can assume it was in the lab too for some reason. Especially since it matches perfectly
I love the mask, and in the movie, we can see Osborn obsession with the weird masks in his studio. The glider suit had no helmet only those googles and some kind of mind scanner. I can see Osborn evolving that to a full helmet which fits with the new more grounded superhero tone. The viewer wouldn't buy Osborn spending 3 hours every time he wants to wear his wearable silicone makeup mask.
Sick of the complaints about the mask. It looks perfectly fine, can't expect a movie from the early 2000's to contain cutting-edge technology every time. I think the mask has a lot of character and used to creep me out a little as a kid.
This mask has always been my favorite. 2002 spiderman was my first so when I saw other versions without this style of mask, I thought they looked goofy
L take, it’s perfect, it’s a great mix of realistic and still conveys the comic book feel and tone of the green goblin with a practical application & on top of that they give it a good explanation by showing us that Norman is a big fan and collector of tribal masks & on top of that I’ve never heard anyone say that it looks bad or cheesy irl or online.
For real I thought it was a good and clever idea to include travel mask as an inspiration and honestly I feel like it the green goblin is one of the hardest things to get down in cinema because even if you try to make them look more realistic and comic book accurate he comes out, looking ugly and fake like an amazing Spider-Man 2
To be honest i love this green goblin mask because at least they did go to the route of making an animatronic like mask that supposed to be comic book accurate but this final version is better than nothing despite nostalgia this suit is flawed but far from perfection it's still one of my favorites.
I love your videos, this one didn’t hit the mark for me in a personal level though. I always loved the mask and costume within the context of this particular movie!
I will grant you that I grew up with this movie, but I never minded the mask. I would also argue that it doesn't detract from the performance at all because DeFoe is such an expressive actor even if it is mainly his voice that we hear.
It works for the movie cause it’s updating the look to also reflect the military aspect of the glider and the suit being a prototype of what Norman was trying to get military funding for using the experiment on himself caused the split in his personality I also can understand some people wanted a more comic accurate look
I had no idea people didn’t like the Green Goblin mask. I always thought it was appropriate given the character’s background and the feel of the movie.
...they did create an in universe reason why he wore the Goblin Suit. It was a protective suit worn in tandum to safely fly the glider. They showed it during the glider stesting scene.
Honestly, I was quite sad when they broke the mask for No Way Home. I've always been a fan of the Raimi Goblin mask, but I saw the movies when I was a kid, so it's definitely possible that it's just nostalgia talking.
The mask never bothered me. I thought it looked good and more grounded in reality. A rubber mask would look cheap. He was a tech guy who went insane. So he made a mask that functioned like a protective helmet. And at the time it was intimidating
i used to think the mask was weird, because of how it didn't move. its grown on me now, but i do think it could be improved. i think the rest of the suit is weird tho, too form fitting. he needs a cloak or scarf or something to cover it up, like in No Way Home.
The mask never bothered me, but I was 11 when I saw the first film so who knows how much nostalgia has shielded my eyes haha
I hate the films but the mask is great

It was an military prototype like the glider. Though the concept mask was better, I am disappointed they didn't use that top Shattered half in SNWH. Better than those boring goggles
Unpopular opinion: I actually love the Goblin's mask... Like actually love it and was sad when he destroyed it in NWH.
Honestly, from the test shots, I kind of hate that comic-accurate Goblin head. It looks like something from The Mask. I think it would have been way too distracting and potentially ridiculous onscreen. The metallic head they went with wasn't great, but I'd say it was the better of the two.
The nask looks absolutely incredible and is ..iconic...fact !!
Exactly! The mask makes perfect sense if you think of it a being a helmet, twisted by Osborne's twisted mind
I kinda like the mask. But I wish we got the alternate makeup/animatronic mask instead. Still, that mask is kind of iconic.
Harshly disagree I really liked his mask for what it was
Tho Dafoes face is incredibly expressive
I thought the mask was a brilliant way to adapt from the comics.
For real I thought it was a good and clever idea to include travel mask as an inspiration and honestly I feel like it the green goblin is one of the hardest things to get down in cinema because even if you try to make them look more realistic and comic book accurate he comes out, looking ugly and fake like an amazing Spider-Man 2
I always thought it looked cool
To be honest i love this green goblin mask because at least they did go to the route of making an animatronic like mask that supposed to be comic book accurate but this final version is better than nothing despite nostalgia this suit is flawed but far from perfection it's still one of my favorites.
What u smoking?..... The mask looks great! guess u are running out of content and had nothing else to post 💀
Wdym it’s dope
never even heard of someone who thought the mask was bad
I never had a problem with the mask. I didn't even know it bothered people.
I love your videos, this one didn’t hit the mark for me in a personal level though. I always loved the mask and costume within the context of this particular movie!
Look at little nerdstalgic junior, gonna cry?
I will grant you that I grew up with this movie, but I never minded the mask. I would also argue that it doesn't detract from the performance at all because DeFoe is such an expressive actor even if it is mainly his voice that we hear.
It works for the movie cause it’s updating the look to also reflect the military aspect of the glider and the suit being a prototype of what Norman was trying to get military funding for using the experiment on himself caused the split in his personality I also can understand some people wanted a more comic accurate look
Hot take: I like the Green Goblin suit in the movie. In my opinion, it puts the original design to shame.
The mask looks pretty good, comic accuracy, nice design, and they reused it in no way home with a little refinements
Personally i LOVED the mask….. however, i was 6 so theres that.
I thought the look was iconic.
I loved the mask as it gave viewers a glimpse into the mind of the Goblin. It worked for what Raimi was going for.
This comment section passed the vibe check
The mask always looked cool and makes narrative sense.
I liked it. It fit what the movie was going for.
THAT MASK IS A NATIONAL TREASURE!!!
Bro you’re living in another world that mask looks cool
What? It looks amazing wtf are you talking about
Who ever said it was bad? What the hell?
I had no idea people didn’t like the Green Goblin mask. I always thought it was appropriate given the character’s background and the feel of the movie.
Excuse me? That entire outfit is iconic, mask included. Downvote for you.
The mask is freaking amazing. What are you talking about?
The mask looks good
This is one of the hardest masks I’ve seen. I’ve always loved it
And the cycle of loving then hating then loving them hating continues.
...they did create an in universe reason why he wore the Goblin Suit.
It looks like they were going for a mask that the samurai wore with the scowl. I really like this design.
The mask never bothered me. I thought it looked good and more grounded in reality. A rubber mask would look cheap. He was a tech guy who went insane. So he made a mask that functioned like a protective helmet. And at the time it was intimidating
One of the few times I disagree with you. I have no issues with the mask.
Typical Response Hater the mask looks amazing
i used to think the mask was weird, because of how it didn't move. its grown on me now, but i do think it could be improved. i think the rest of the suit is weird tho, too form fitting. he needs a cloak or scarf or something to cover it up, like in No Way Home.
