I feel exactly the same way about how Toscanini conducted Verdi overtures, too. "The Sicilian Vespers" under his baton, sounds like a Walt Disney Silly Symphony---and that's high praise as far as I'm concerned.

This record had an interesting history. Solti was recording the first of his Wagner cycle in the Sofiensaal in Vienna (Das Rheingold) and it turned out that there was time remaining in the recording session. The producer, John Culshaw, decided to use the time to record these overtures. The recording was released on Decca in Europe and on the "London" label in the US. (London CS 6146) in 1959.
We owe a lot to John Culshaw. His daring, tenacity and genius put the Wagner cycle on outstanding recordings for all time.
My father bought me that very record when it came out. My younger brother and I played it until we wore it out.
A nice story, but it's highly doubtful that it was a spur of the moment decision to record these as part of "left-over time" in a session. Having played (and recorded) in many musical ensembles, I know they absolutely would rehearse them at least once before recording them, the orchestra would need to know in advance so they are prepared to perform these overtures, the correct instrumentation needs to be present, the parts on the music stands, etc. etc. Lots of details people don't think about or understand unless you play in an orchestra. None of this happens spontaneously, without lots of prep by many people. Just getting the music ready and to the orchestra is a logistic that takes effort and prep time. And it would take HOURS to record these overtures to make an entire album, not something done quickly at the end of the day on a lark because you had some "time remaining" in the session.

Solti is excellent in this "opérettes" repertoire. One must say that Suppe was an excellent orchestrator so these overtures are very well written for the large orchestra.

WOW!!! SO good to hear this again, after about 30 years. Thank you "VinylRecordSound" so much for posting! I found a copy of this (late 1970s or early '80s "London" label, as with all Decca recordings released in the U.S. at that time) at our public library. I was already a huge Solti fan(atic) because we lived near Chicago and the Chicago Symphony, of which he was music directory at the time, was our "home" orchestra. I was used to hearing Solti on the CSO radio broadcasts every Sunday afternoon in his trademark (by that time) repertoire of Mahler, Bruckner, Beethoven, etc. We didn't hear much of his "lighter" side, so this record was a revelation.
Very few conductors generated as much pure energy in their interpretations as Solti. He was just an overwhelming force. Solti did nothing half-heartedly; always 150% (and talking a mile a minute in interviews with an accent that was a combination of Hungarian, German, French, Italian, British English, and probably a few things he invented himself!). If you responded to his approach, he was a god (or at least a minor deity); if you didn't, he drove you nuts. I was, and still am, in the former category. Hard to believe he's been gone nearly 20 years!
This particular record benefited from John Culshaw's crack Decca recording team in Vienna, the superb sonics of the Sofiensaal (alas, no longer used as a recording venue), and the quality of the "Decca sound" of the time. As a practical matter, I think the LP had such killer sound because of the short playing time. Plenty of room to spread out the grooves to give breathing space for the loud, strenuous, full orchestra sound. Oh yeah, the orchestra being the Vienna Philharmonic in top its very best form helps a lot, too.
Really too bad that Solti never got to lead a Vienna Phil New Year concert. If these four performances are any indication, it would've been the New Year concert of the century!
Have you seen the Golden Ring, the film of the Wagner recordings? He was a genius at getting the best oout of his musicians and singers but a real force of nature!
Some classical musicians turn their noses up at the GREAT music of Von Suppe. WHY?, because they love to have their little precious discussions about Mahler's oh so great (NOT !!!!) music. People LOVE Von Suppe's music. Much more than some of Mahler's self indulgent stuff. WHY does music HAVE to be so intellectual, and not JUST sound GREAT, like Von Suppe's music?

I think this is possibly the best recording of "Pique Dame" I've ever heard. Solti conducts that piece as fast as it needs to be conducted, especially at the finale.

There's a later recording of these same overtures on the LONDON label which is absolutely definitive. It's the one with the cake and a Grammophone, and Period Cake decorations. Same jacket notes. It just might be nostalgic memory enhancement, but i swear it was a re-recording super -tweeked by Solti in the late 60's or maybe mid 70's. Somebody please post this version.
Solti only recorded the Suppé before this version in 1949 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was also on DECCA. As a matter of fact the LONDON label is the American affiliate of DECCA.
I just assumed that my LONDON recording was of a later date. I'll have to dig it out of storage and look at it. It could be this same DECCA recording with a flashier updated label for American re-release. Solti's Suppe recordings(among many other definitive decca releases) are the best EVER ! Dynamics, intonation, sonority, virtuosity, timbre, mellifluity --- all are utterly impeccable!
Dennis, I just bought a NM copy of London CS6146 (FFRR), the same four overtures: cover has a photo of a Capucchino Coffee, a King of Spades playing card, and a red feather in a ceramic holder...Is this the one you are talking about? The Discogs website doesn't even list a date of release (re-release) for this. Please advise, thanks!

Sorry, I have to agree with the comments that this Poet and Peasant interpretation is a bit hyper-caffeinated. I love Solti most of the time but the music needs to breathe in the opening of P and P.
Mutti just did this with the WPO New Year (2021) and it was sublime. Both he and the musicians played it like it was the greatest music ever written, enhancing everyone's reputation.

Listen to that brass! That was back in the day when they had clean articulation and clean entries. And Solti's entries are clean and well-defined! Not like many of the present ilk who flatter themselves that they're conducting ahead of the beat while ignoring all the horrible, sloppy entries. I could link pages of examples!

I had been raised to love classical music, and still do. But - life got better! Hope it gets better for you. And there are centuries worth of great composers available for us to hear.

Almost any text posted on TH-cam can be translated, if not precisely, at least close enough for gist. Just copy and paste a portion of text into Google search or use Google translate. That can help identify the language and then you can go from there. Also, it is interesting that so many people see darkness in the midst of light. This may be a function of growing older. (I am 67.) carlulrich2 Solti, in all of his egoism, scored this to his liking. He was great, but play the music as it was composed.
