I like the tip about shaping melodies just by simply shifting the same voicing around. I was not aware you could do that over one chord, but it sounds slick!
In each of these pentatonic voicing that move up and down, I find it helpful to look at where the 3rd Interval is in the voicing. There’s always mostly fourth intervals but one third interval in all the inversions. See how that third interval “moves around.” Slowing down and get down to the nitty gritty mechanics of these things helps me internalize them into automaticity more easily.
What's up, Noah? This is another great lesson. You know, for a long time I've known how to voice this chord. Yet, I did not know how to invert it and use it in context. 00:07:03 the introduction of that melody is very helpful in showing how to use the chord in context. I believe that 'list' that I mentioned is starting to populate to include this, Everything You Need to Know to Play Stride and How to Create Inner Motion 😄
Just a beginner but this actually helps learn the keyboard better & noticed its just stacked 4ths with top 3 notes being 2nd inversion major chord. Great memory aid if i'm understanding correctly.
You can also use the minor pentatonic and parts of these voicings, (all of the voicing if you're scoring and not neccesarily playing solo piano), to build extensions on other chords. So with D minor pentatonic the 1,b3,4,5,b7, becomes the 9,11,5,13,1, in C minor and the 7,9,3,#11, 13, in Eb major. There's more but these are first things that come to mind. Cool lesson though. This guy's good.
Many thanks Noah. So what voicing should work for Impressions as well - since we talk about McCoy ;). And I am tempted to try this on Cantaloupe Island or Maiden Voyage as well.
Really enjoying your lessons, Noah! I learn something new every time which I can immediately use to enhance my playing. Also, your keyboard sounds phenomenal. Is it a Nord Stage piano?
Hey Danny, that's a really great question. I do have a starter playlist if you take a look at my channel front page. After that, I would just explore based on what subjects interest you most. I haven't always released things in order of difficulty, but rather in groupings about specific subjects, generally grouped into playlists. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the great video. I notice you like to play these voicings with the left hand playing 2 notes, and the right hand playjng 3 notes. Just wondering if you thought there was an advantage to playing it this way, as my tendency is to play the first 3 notes in the left hand.
Yo Noah awesome as always ! in order to get those 4th voicing under my hands, my Russian teacher advised my to look for the major 3th . meaning it's always perfect forth expect for one of them which is a major 3th. I don't know if I mean being clear enough here... )
Great material and well presented. Thanks! I am wondering if I might suggest that you don't say "guys" so frequently in addressing the people watching. The oft repeated "alright guys" makes me feel that this is not really meant for the women who play! How about "alright friends"? No offence meant! Thanks
RIP McCoy Tyner
Great video Noah!
RIP. What an incredible pianist he was. Thanks and let me know if you ever have any questions I can help with!

Glad you like it! Let me know how it goes if you try it out.
I've watched this one several times over. It's one of my favorites.

Dmin pentatonic over Bb is where I went with it (3,5,13,7,9). Also G(5,7,1,9,11 ie. sus4 in this case). Fun stuff!
I love bro! Thank you
Thank you so much
Thanx, Maestro.
Can you make a video about other pentatonic scales like 3b, 6b or the one that uses the 7 instead of the 6?
Many thanks Noah. So what voicing should work for Impressions as well - since we talk about McCoy ;). And I am tempted to try this on Cantaloupe Island or Maiden Voyage as well.
Excellent.
Thank you.
My pleasure!
Hey,i from Brazil,good good lessions,never stop!!!!!
Thanks, I won't! Appreciate you leaving a comment.
He's got a Mason & Hamlin! Those pianos are tops - just as good as Steinways, if not better. Not as popular today, since they don't make them anymore.
beautifulllllllllllllllllllllllllll you never cease to amaze lol

Hey Noah, question. I'd like to work through all your videos but I want to go in order. Do you have any advice on a general order?

I don’t think there’s any particular advantage. Really just depends what’s feeling best for your hands!
Sick!!! 👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
Knew I had to watch this, thanks!
You're welcome, Luis!

Hah! I made a comment about the same thing. Great minds think alike!
